the engine runs great while i'm driving, it doesn't stumble or run rough, but it still cuts off when the engine becomes warm. i have a crane electronic ignition with a crane ps-20 coil that was installed about 5 years ago. i wonder if the ignition could be the problem? i drove it yesterday and it cut off and i couldn't get it cranked until the engine cooled (about 10-15 mins). i don't think it's fuel related because i installed a new fuel filter and it stays clean and i cleaned the filter in the fuel pump. the electric pump runs great also.
i converted my ignition system to breakerless electronic ignition about 5 years ago. this problem just started about 2 months ago. i put a new see through fuel filter on a week ago and haven't noticed any particles in it. i drove to work 2 days ago and did fine on the road. it did cut off two times when i went to park it. i don't drive it everyday since i can't trust it.
what would cause me engine to die at speed in my 240? the electrical pump works correctly, and the mechanical pump is a few years old. could it be the mech. pump? ususally when the engine dies, i can restart it immediately and it will run , and sometimes it will die again as soon as i hit the gas pedal. i have made no adjustments to the carbs since my mechanic set them up about 2 years ago. i don't think it's an electrical problem because i just replaced the battery and alternator. (when the engine dies, the radio and lights stay on).
what would cause my 240 to die at speed. it does this frequently, i have a new alternator, battery, voltage regulator. when it happens, ususally i can crank it up again and drive on, and sometimes it will die again. could it be the carbs?, fuel pump? also when it happens, it usually is just the engine that dies not the power ( the radio and lights are still on). i don't drive very it often because of this. it started doing this 2 months ago.
i took the reman. alt. to a local import shop today, and he verified that it was indeed the wrong part . i then ordered a new nissan alternator from him. i will no longer be buying a remanufactured part for this car again! that reman. alternator was the 3rd one in a row for me in just 2 years, thank god i had a warranty with it so i had only paid for just one alternator. oh , by the way i looked into those english chrome s.u.'s, and i am considering these over new carbs from z therepy. does anyone know which carbs would be best to go with. i currently have on the car 1972 240z s.u.'s instead of the cheap flat-tops that came with the car, but i want new carbs because i will be rebuilding my engine soon and want the carbs to look new again and work like new. - matthew
i recently bought a reman. alternator for my 1973 240z, and the posts on the alternator are different than the old one that i returned to the store. i have the yellow wire with the red stripe that hooks to it and i have two black wires that also hook to it. my problem is that if i hook those 3 wires to the alt. , the battery gets hot. this new alt. has only 1 post where as the old one had 2 posts. so i would like to know how i am going to hook these wires up. the black wires could be ground wires for ?, but i have no idea.- HELP
