  1. In a '70 240Z with a 4-speed the stick does not seem to move in a typical H pattern. Instead you are able to move it nearly anywhere you want to. So what's wrong and how do you fix it?

Can someone tell me if there is an easy way to tell if a 240Z has a header or not? I looked at a car the other day and the seller said that no modifications have been made but the exaust is pretty loud and it looked like it may have a header, but then again I'm not sure how to tell the difference.

I looked at a '70 240Z today and it seems to be in pretty good condition. Below is a summary of what I found and would like to know what you here think is a fair price for the car. - appears to be original orange paint, badly in need of repainting - rearend clunks when shifting (problem unknow) - breaks are firm - pass side floorpan and rail under it have minor rust (maybe repair but replace would probably be better) - rust under battery tray (appears to only be surface rust but was hard to tell with the battery tray still in the car) - leaky rear hatch, spare tire well was full of water from this morning's rain, but metal is solid and no signs of rust there...yet - driver's seat needs recovered - wiring/electrical has been 'modified' and should probably be completely gone through - A/C compressor belt missing so I do not know if the A/C works or not, the seller said it does - registration expired in Feb of this year, owner still drives it though - front carpet missing from both driver and pass side (floor mats only) - cracked dash (gee what a suprise) - interior plastic trim is in fair condition, only one appeared to need replaced - diff leak - possible rear main seal leak (leak appears to be where engine and tranny meet) - hood may have been replaced or just repainted, it's not oxidized the way the rest of the car is - gear shift is very loose, the shift plate may be shattered (or what ever the piece is that restricts the stick movement to it's H format) - VIN: HLS30-08215 That's everything I got so what do you think???
  5. Phred, Do you hook one of these up to an air compressor? Do you happen to know if anyone rents them?
  6. I have borrowed a compression test gauge from my brother-in-law and have a couple questions. 1 - what should the compression on a stock '82 280 be with an F54 block and a P79 head? I looked in my books and could not find this info. 2 - how much spin on the engine is required to do this test? The engine is on a stand in my garage so just turning the key will not be possible.

Yes bambi, that is what I was asking. That is what I expected too but the seller pulled the cam and valve cover off. I must say that I am partially at fault for not being 100% clear on what I expected. He is making good on it though, late last night he said that I can have the missing items. I just wanted to make sure that I was not being unreasonable in expecting thecomplete head ready to bolt onto a block.

Generally speaking what would you expect to get if you were to buy a head from an individual?
  10. Oh, I just thought of a stupid question as I am still quite new to all of this. The axle flanges, these are somthing on the outside of the diff on each side where the axle attaches. Yes? And you would have to swap them because the diff was in the front and will not be in the rear therefore the left side is not on the right side and visa versa, correct?
  11. 2many, you are an encyclopedia of knowledge!! Thank you for the additional info.
  12. 2many, on the 3.90 R-180: 720 4x4 1/83-6/83 is that the front or rear diff, or are they the same? A follow-up question is that diff a drop-in swap or do you know if there is other work/parts required?
  13. texasz replied to texasz's post in a topic in Suspension & Steering
:surprised Oh crap! I thought that all R180s were the same except for the gears. :cross-eye 2many pointed me, and others, in the direction of where to get different geared R180s in this post: http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1568 According to his info a 3.9 R180 was available in the 720 4x4 1/83-6/83. Since the 720 is also a Datsun will it be a drop-in? Where did yours come from?
  14. texasz replied to texasz's post in a topic in Suspension & Steering
You're welcome. I am always glad to help when I can. I have opted not to go for an R200 at this time due to the amount of work and extra expenses involved in the swap. I'd rather find an R180 with a 3.9 gear since this would be a drop-in swap.

Well now I can't find the post where I saw this item at, it was a guy in FL selling it and a few other parts. But I did find this guy in OH selling the same item for $50 + shipping: http://www.hybridz.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=21162 Ok, I kept searching but still could not find it but did come across another one for $60 and it is in CA. http://www.zcar.com/classifieds/index.php?method=showdetails&list=advertisement&rollid=772&fromfromlist=classifiedscategory&fromfrommethod=showhtmllist&fromfromid=34&

I forgot to get back to you on this one. I just wanted to say hey thanx guys! 10mm 1.5 thread was perfect, the engine is on the stand ready for me to start learning how to tear it down and build it back up. It's a little scary but I'm really looking forward to the experience! :nervous:

I have just pulled everything off this site (html, all links, all images, etc). The html has to be cleaned up a bit as there are references to Geocities still which cause the little popup to still appear but at least the info will not be lost now. I will clean up the html and ditch all the references to Geocities. If you would like this I can zip it and provide it to you (unzipped it is a whopping 1.3x meg); but you will have to contact me as I may not keep up with this post.

I think it can be purchased from either MSA or VB (maybe both, I just can't remember).

Welcome to the club. I too have been shopping for a 240Z for a few months now and am just curious where you got your's from? It may be someone I talked to at some point.

How much should one expect to pay for a P90 head?
  23. texasz replied to texasz's post in a topic in Engine & Drivetrain
THANX! Now it is very clear as to what the letters stand for! :classic:

I have seen people talking about L28, L28E, and L28ET engines. What's the difference? Oh yes, then there's the LD28 and the L28. Again, what's the difference?

So are the 5 way adjustable Tokico Illumina Shocks & Springs a good way to go or should I hold out for the McPherson coilovers? If yes, then is $564 (including shipping) a good price for all four corners? Car use will be some street driving and autox if this helps answer my questions.
