240z still not starting
Yeah, I messed with that during my lunch break and go it to open a little. Didn't seem to help the problem with front carb not sustaining the car but it got it breathing. I'll keep working with it, like you said, its a start.

240z still not starting
Okay, worked a little more today and was able to make it run a little better with some adjustments. But more importantly, I found that while at idle, if I lift the front carb piston to shut it off, the car continues to run. But no matter what richness I have the front carb set to, if I lift the piston on the rear carb, the car dies. That should mean that the front carb isn't delivering fuel for some reason, right? Well I pulled off the float and it seems to move freely, and the bowl had fuel in it. I tinkered with the action of it a bit and put it back on when it seemed right. The problem persisted.. Maybe something got in the fuel hose to the nozzle while I had it apart, and blocked it? Doesnt seem right, because it couldn't backfire out that carb like it has if there wasnt fuel in the first place. Maybe the float level is wrong? Seemed the same as the other one, though. Any thoughts? I have to be getting to work. Also, it sounds like the rear carb is pulling more air that the front, though I can feel the suction on both of them. I was able to drive it (slowly) to work today though, thats better than its been in weeks.

240z still not starting
Oh, and for anyone wondering. I snapped a phone pic of the spark plug I pulled out, they all looked about like that. Funny, I've only put maybe a thousand miles since I last pulled them, and they were like new. But its been a damn cold winter and I've been running way too rich. I'll wrench on it some more in the morning and let you guys know what happens.

240z still not starting
Its a 73 240z with a round top conversion. Ive checked the firing order like 6 times. Dont have a timing light at home though. Im strongly suspecting its with the tuning on the carbs. But I just cant get it right.. I'll start rechecking things.

Never mind. One of the floats was messed up, I fixed it. Its still running like crap though. Backfiring from the intake and exhaust. Ive got the nozzle at 2 turns. Though, again, I've tried it all over.

The store didnt have any ngks so I installed some autolites for the time being. After some hesitation it started and wouldnt idle. A few adjustments later and it was running. However, now there is fuel pouring out of the float bowl air hose. I remeber the just su says why, but if anyone recalls, I'd rather not scrub through a 4 hour video for that bit.

240z still not starting
Thanks Casey. I though I might have flooded th a few weeks ago, when the prroblems started but then they kept coming. I guess I was joping tjey would just clear out themselves, but that doesnt seem to be the case.

It seems to do better than with just the gas, but its not really enough time to tell. Figured as much on the NGK. Dunno if any of the local shops carry it, but I'll see.

240z still not starting
Yup, chokes move better than ever. One would stick, part of the reason I pulled them off. I didnt get a chance to look at the spark plugs, got too cold, but I'll pull them tomorrow and see what I find. If they need to be replaced, whats the best kind to pick up? Before the rebuild, it didnt even try to fire. It turned over until the starter motor finnaly passed away. Now it at least sounds like some fuel is lighting up.

So I pulled out my carbs..
Well its firing for the first time in a while, but still no dice. I've created a new thread in the help me section. http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/help-me/48378-240z-still-not-starting.html#post420719

240z still not starting
A few weeks ago, I turned the car off after work, and much to my dismay, it wouldn't start the next morning. Since then, I've got a new starter motor in it, recharged the battery (several times), and rebuilt the carbs. The fuel pump is working, and for the first time in weeks its actually turning over, and trying to fire, but its still not starting. It just sputters. I've got my nozzles down about 3.5 turns, though I've tried it in every position from 2-5 turns. Starting fluid helps, but it dies shortly after. Not sure what I'm doing wrong here... Its hard to do anything with it since I don't have a garage, and its below freezing here in Salt Lake. I was out in the cold for 3 hours, when I did finally get it to sputter. It sounds as if it would start, but just doesn't. Any thoughts or suggestions are welcomed.

Shame that it happened.. but wow, they do fantastic work!

240z Inspection Light Source?
No kidding. Its surprising these cars don't go for a lot more.. I could probably sell my bumpers and seats for more than I paid for the whole car.

Sending unit leaking
Its super easy if its the same as the 240z, as mine had the same problem. Caused a short that would make my gauge not work if my fuel level was above the sending unit. (mine was leaking out the terminals themselves, the gasket was fine) If you can lift it, its a cakewalk, otherwise prop her up on a curb or something and crawl under. Make sure you're gas level is below it or pump out the excess so it doesn't spill everywhere. Pop off the old unit and drop the new part on. It took me probably 5 minutes. You'll know you did it right when the leak is gone, and you get a dash reading. Good luck!

So I pulled out my carbs..
Certainly, back in 2011. Since then all its needed is a wipe down here and there.

So I pulled out my carbs..
I figured as much, and thought about suggesting that, but ive never tried. When I get around to that valve job, I intend to polish that cover, and get the engine bay a little more presentable.

So I pulled out my carbs..
Took advantage of the above freezing weather and got them back on, and the choke moving properly. Still dont have the fuel bowls on. Hopefully the gaskets arrive tomorrow, and she fires up. I guess I just clean the bodies while on the car regularly. Just a wet and dry rag, no special chemicals. I didnt even use soapcleaning them this time.. not much good for ones with the patina already. Perhaps a strong degreaser, and carb cleaner. I just wish the rest of my engine looked that good, its got its fair share of patina.

Aftermarket Mirrors
MSA was kind enough to confirm the rumors. A manufacturer is making a limited run of passenger mirrors to match the original driver side mirror. They will release more details mid next month. No price is set, but they anticipate them being fairly expensive. My guess is in the ballpark of the normal mirror, perhaps the set for $200. Ill hold off installing them for a bit.

Aftermarket Mirrors
I'm sure they would. If thats true, I'd much rather have the original style, I just haven't been willing to fork out over $200 for a set of any of the current repros. I actually prefer these to the bullet style, my neighbor seems to have a set on his 280, and either way, theyre a big improvement from what I have. But if theres a run of the stock mirrors coming at a reasonable price, I'll just set these aside as backup, or return them. I need to send back a glovebox, anyway. Whatever fellow at the repro company made it did a damn poor job stapling it together. A fellow on here has a set of MG MGB mirrors on his that I thought looked pretty good - and a little closer to stock - but they cost twice what the round MSA mirrors do. I'll definitely check the lenses before I proceed.
-
Just how rare are they?
Added my 240 to the registry. I wish I knew more about it..

Aftermarket Mirrors
Hey everyone. I recently got MSA's Classic Chrome Mirror set. http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/50-1164 I was fully aware they didn't fit the stock mounts but was hopefully they'd fit the existing mounts for my current crummy plastic ones. And I liked them best for the price range. I pulled the old ones off, and it looks like the rear hole was about a half inch or so too far forward to be a simple swap. I'm very hesitant to drill extra holes in my door - especially ones more outward. Anyone have experience installing this mirror? Are there alternative methods to mount it? Automotive double stick tape? Or should I just suck it up and put a hole in her. Thanks, Alex

So I pulled out my carbs..
Will do! They seemed adequately full of nice, clean fuel when I pulled them off, so I know it was getting that far. Edit: Also, on a side note, I was hoping you might be able to pull some history on my car, Bruce, based on the info on the butterfly. I'm not sure if that was the PO, or the PPO at that time.

'73 240z wont start D:
Not yet, I will. Last time I looked they were great, but that was a while back. It ran fine one day, and the next it wouldn't fire. That morning I had cranked and pumped so much, I figure it could've flooded it. But I'll know soon enough.

'73 240z wont start D:
Battery is fully charged, and she turns over with a vigor I've never heard since I got her. Here's a side by side. As you can see, my old starter looks as if it was stored in a swamp. Anyway, it cranks, but still no fire. I just rebuilt the carbs, and I'm waiting on some gaskets to get it back in the car. If I'm still having problems, we're probably looking back to it being flooded/fouled.

So I pulled out my carbs..
Thanks! I don't know why I was ever so intimidated by them. I just wish I had gotten around to it when it was still warm. There are better ways to spend a below freezing morning than pulling apart an engine.. If its still giving me trouble, then I perhaps I fouled my plugs. Brand new starter, a fully charged battery and shiny carbs should be a recipe for a quick start.
