  1. We sure did. Told you that piston was gunked up! I was able to clear the choke sticking problem be bending the arm that attaches to the nozzle a touch. Everything is nice and smooth now. And they look even better now, Blue, thanks! Here's a look! Just waiting on the new gaskets, and hopefully shes back on the road early this week.
  2. And found this. Looks like its cleaning time...this is my first time rebuilding, so I may have questions along the way Edit: just turned it over and found what appears to be a date 8/24/11, the number 1331, and a signature that looks like ztherapy...
  3. Bitter cold day, but I got the new starter in. Turned the key and got one turn over, and now just a rapid clicking noise. Probably killed my battery, too. Its back on the chager, we'll see how its doing before long.
  4. The motor turns over - but only a single huff per key turn if that makes any sense. Solid advice, thanks. Haha Definitely not corrosion. The starter went from working acceptably to its current state between cranks, mostly my fault and the weathers.
  5. Still waiting for the part to come in from Rock Auto. I had it hooked to a charger for a bit, probably not long enough, but no difference.. I'll pick up some starter fluid, need it anyway, and see where I get on Wednesday, my next day off. As it is now, there it makes one or two slow huffs and then stops. Seems to crank a little stronger when left untouched for a while, but it hasnt recovered this time. I think the main problem is fuel, and all the cold starts in the winter finally got to the starter. Its probably between 7-40 years old, haha.
  6. Just ordered the part from rockauto, Remy brand, part # 16209, since it was cheapest and offers a limited lifetime warranty. Lets hope all goes well..
  7. Perfect, that will save me an easy 30 bucks. Thanks! Any specific recommendations? Once I've got the starter in, I can get to the real problem, the carbs...
  8. No car club here in Utah, that I know of... I'll check online, and if no dice, I'll get the Motorsport refurb.
  9. Here in Salt Lake, the winter has been so mild.. Is only snowed several times. I was able to enjoy driving it until a few days ago, when my starter motor died on me.
  10. I recharged the battery, all the electronics run fine, too. I think im burning up my starter with all the cold starts and this last snow did it in. MSA has remanufactured ones for about $70 so thats not so bad. I'll try that adjustment and give it some starter fluid when I can.. might have to push start it to get it to the shop though... thanks
  11. Forgive me if this post is a little vauge, the weather and lack of garage has made it impossible to do any real work on it.. The last time it drove wouldve been Sunday the 23rd. I got off work around 11pm, it started just fine, and I drove home with no problems. It was probably around 20-32 degrees, much like today, and to keep it running I am having to keep it choked (im sure thats a problem of its own with the carbs) . Anyway, out of curiousity, I turned off the choke, and the car slowly died. The next morning, itd snowed like crazy. I went to get it started, and it wouldn't. I realized my choke was still off, so I pulled back the handle and it broke off but the lever itself was fine. I checked the position in the engine, and it looked rohht, pushed it off again, and things seemed to move properly. I cranked the key, and it would crank, but nothing.. now, over the last few days, its been doing this, and now the starters not doing so hot, and it wont hardly crank. Sometimesitll just tun over 1-5 times. Im sure the initial problem has to do with the choke, and carbs, but I cant even try anymore, I dont want to burn out the starter. The weather is awful, and I dont have a garage. Keep that in mind with your suggestions. Any help is appreciated.
  12. I'll add mine there (or possibly update its existing records). I'm hoping it actually has some info on mine in there now... Thats a scary low figure, but kind of expected given the time thats passed. I've seen probably 5 myself in SLC in the last year, and a few more in rural Utah - but would put it at around or a little over 10 cars in drivable condition in this whole state, and perhaps half of which looking presentable as well.
  13. Thanks! Exactly what I was looking for. I did a few searches, but didn't find those particular threads.
  14. Thanks for the link, that's actually where I got my numbers. But I've only been able to find how many were made - I'm more interested in how many are still on the road. The Registry of Motor Vehicles should have that, but I wouldn't know how to start asking them on a national level, or at all really.
  15. Out of plain curiosity, I was wondering how rare our Zs really are. From the numbers I've found, it looks like 148,115 240z's we're exported to the united states from 1970-1973, which are the years I've always been most interested in. Anyone have figures on just how many are left? Again, I'm particularly interested in the early years, even more so ones which have retained much of their originality.
  16. The thing about it is, even if the life of the pertronix isn't optimal, its still going to be longer than, and require less adjustment than points. It was a drop in modification for my 240, going to and from requires only placing a few screws and wires.
  17. I had the Pertronix in mine for a while, and it worked great (until I carelessly routed its wires in such way that the rotor sliced it after some routine dizzy checks). Best part is if it ever does fail, you can retrofit the points back on in under 10 minutes and 10 dollars - which is what I did at that time.

So my neighbor picked something up recently... Its in pretty good shape, and pretty original.

If I open the rear hatch, it can be heard very well outside. Haha. The material is really up to you... Being a guitarist by hobby, I could give you a lecture about the differences between the cabinet woods and openings and the sounds response. But honestly, any sturdy wood would be good, and depending on your climate, one that is effected less by temperature changes may be the best call. Might be cool to have two small, seperate boxes attached to the posts in the rear area pointing out.. I forget what they're called - covered in the vinyl? Regardless. Then it wouldn't hurt to have some more standard placed speakers, just because in the long run, how it sounds when you drive is probably the most important. In addition to the rear speaker cab option, there are a ton of existing placements for speakers, or nooks that can easily and seamlessly be changed. What will get it sounding best is achieving independence in range - Having tweeters and subs, in addition to the 6x9s

At least in my 240, its one box housing both speakers. I believe mine was custom made, but similar ones can also be purchased from MSA for around $150

I've got Kenwoods, pretty sure they're 6x9 in a rear box, with the retrosound radio. It sounds great, but a separate bass speaker wouldn't hurt.

A lady friend of mine spotted and sent me this picture of a gorgeous z in the Salt Lake Community college parking lot. Belong to anyone here?
  23. Haha, I know, I know. If it makes you feel any better, now I'm wishing I'd just asked you make a full metal base like that for mine rather than going through all that trouble with the existing bottom and threading. That looks absolutely fantastic.

Welcome to the club! Great looking Z. Nice to see that I'm not the last one here in Utah. haha I've been able to drive mine, so far at least... Its been pretty dry. When it gets bad though, it drives like a sled.

Thanks for the reply, Carl. Its complete, besides maybe some odds and ends. It was restored 7 years ago, remains in good condition, but is showing some wear (from the PO, of course, I take good care of 'er) and every effort was made to keep it stock. It is a daily driver and indeed driven everyday - but not very far, I live very close to work, could walk if I had to. Perfect driving record, no accidents or tickets - however I am 19 and male, therefore considered high risk based solely on statistics. Its not currently garage kept, much to my disdain. Its no #1, but still in great shape. Its presently insured on State Farm, so not a classic car policy. I'm pretty sure its a stated value policy, for the amount of $4,700. It would likely be declared totaled in any accident, considering the front bumper alone couldn't well be replaced for less than a grand.
