changing efi hoses on 78 280z
that's what he wrote on the estimate. didn't see it till i got home and he was closed. 250 would get me new everything from the rail down. unfortunately, i can't quit screwing around. literally. ha! thank you, i'm here all week. nothing gets done without those screws. hopefully if order stuff today i can get it in by the weekend.

changing efi hoses on 78 280z
Speaking of sad face. No injectors today either. It sounded like he hadn't even started them, I got three different excuses. Plus he's charging me more than and taking longer than buying a new set. I explained that to him and he just said "ok ok, tomorrow. I'll lower price" then hung up. I looked and okinjectors is $150 to basically restore them or for a bit more I get all new ones. But 250 seems too much, I'm sure I can get a good new set if I'm gonna shell that out. So if the price is still higher, I'd hate to do it to him but he can keep those old mismatched set and I get new ones, rockauto seemed the cheapest. I like supporting local businesses, but don't like getting the shaft. Shaft!

Black liquid. Odorless, I think, don't remember for sure. I remember it took a couple of seconds to splatter most of my hand before getting a sad face.

changing efi hoses on 78 280z
no i think i'll just glue it back, hehe. seems like it'll be fine. should i be worried that it won't pass smog? it didn't smoke or anything but did shoot crud out of the exhaust before parking it. i thought maybe the leak was the culprit.

dropped off injectors at the shop. said he was gonna keep them overnight. wasn't expecting that since i was planning on it taking a couple of hours so i can spend the afternoon installing. called Nissan about those hex screws and said they only have it in stock in OR. ugh, gotta scout for some screws. so didn't really do much yesterday other than clean some more connectors. when i took the rail off i found a broken tube that was glued back on: is this important? i need it to pass smog so i can get my pink. anything else i can do to help pass? might have a shop help me out with this one.

changing efi hoses on 78 280z
Nice, thanks for all the tips everybody. Looks like another day off, which is +/-. + for the z, hehehe. Today ill go to the FI shop and try my luck at Nissan for those screws. And maybe scout around for that one holder. It got a decent cleaning session yesterday. Most connectors were fine, some were slightly green. Does not have fuse links. It has a newer cable that has a fuse that is wired to the fuse box, I think. Don't know if that's a good solution. PO: I checked all the wiring, I even fixed some. ME: wow, so you know a lot about these cars? PO: Nothing. A friend helped me tear it down. He said these cars are easy. He's an electrician. ME: wow, so has he worked on one of these before? PO: He's does residential. So I'm sure ill be posting a thread in the Elec section soon, hehe. But hey, its like that Cash song, one piece at a time...

changing efi hoses on 78 280z
The injectors sounded like they were clicking ok last it ran. One of them has melted plastic along the body, I have mixed feelings about that. There's an FI shop around the corner but he was closed. Sad face. So I spent the day cleaning around there. Used most of an engine brite. Also wanna clean the connections while am at it, as per atlantic z. I found one of the plastic injector holder was broken on one of the screw holes. Nobody has it in stock. Since its just a holder would it be fine? Might the FI shop have some? Oh and what can I expect when getting them cleaned/tested? New o rings?

That last screw was getting the upper hand so I took out the rail and left that one in. The space wasn't much of a difference but at last the battle is won. With two casualties, a coolant hose and a tiny emissions tube? Looking at my injectors I noticed #5 and #6 looked different shape than the others from the tip, and #6 has either a melted o ring or someone tried to seal a leak. Also noticed the tips of #1, #2, #4 has a slant at the tip as if something is knicking at it. Any thoughts?

Ok thanks. Battling it out with the last screw. I guess I'm removing the cold start or should I cut that section connecting to rail then replace

changing efi hoses on 78 280z
yea after this I'm gonna put an extinguisher inside. Got another day off so ill work on that today. Don't really want to remove the cold start, looks like its never been touched. Maybe to clean it? Does the FSM say what the hose sizes are? I know its 5/16 for the most but I don't remember seeing hose sizes. all the hose info I found was insertion lengths.

thanks chas! i had read post before i decided to do the job, persuaded me to tackle it. i guess i'm just missing that "invisible force". hopefully the force will be strong with this one. this 280 was supposed to be my daily and so i can learn how efi works. talk about baptism by fire.

changing efi hoses on 78 280z
hey all. i had a random day off from work yesterday and i decided to fix the fuel leak around the injectors that leaks when the car is cold. i guess when the car heats up the rubber expands and solves the leak. the most consistent leak was at the bottom of my #2 injector, where the metal cup and the green plastic meet. the other two leaks were along the fuel rail. all injectors were clicking. i was going to town when i got stomped. a couple of the screws on the injectors are either galled or really tight. the bottom ones are really tough to get to and i found a broken retainer, looks like its plastic?. i thought maybe i could just cut the hoses and take the rail out first then the injectors so i can get to the screws but i seem to be missing a manifold bolt because it's not going anywhere. i'll look again. i'm also gonna replace the screws, maybe to hex so it's easier next time. and o rings. do i need two o-rings in each injector? the FSM only shows one. parts store shows two, top and bottom. with the new hose can i get rid of the metal cup at the end? i'd feel safer with two clamps instead of one FSM says to remove the cold start valve along with the rail. do i need to do this or can i just disconnect at the hose? when installing i'm thinking injectors first then fuel rail on top or maybe all together. other than that the injectors are gonna get tested and cleaned and i'm gonna clean connections around there. suggestions and tips appreciated

two z or not two z?
hey all so i've been thinking about this since i stopped driving my 280z a couple of months ago and wanted to get some insight from those of you that have or at some point had two different types of z's or two z's. while my 260z is offline i thought it'd be a good idea to have a daily and make my 260z a quasi-daily. i missed driving a z so why not have a daily z and a quasi z. one that's comfortable (with a heater and a/c) and one that's fun. plus i thought it'd be cool to ask "which z today?" i saw a 280z 2+2 and loved it, drained my repair funds, bought it. two different cars. one hefty one light. i really liked how it sounds and ran great but it sprung a gas leak and that drained the fun out of it. the only thing i didn't like about the 280 is the cat converter and the whole floor temp. it's hot enough here in so cal. plus it needs attention sooner rather than later and low on funds. that made me think about keeping the car. i mean i really don't need two cars, i know when it comes down to it i'm gonna be driving one more than the other. so i'm at a crossroad. so what's it like for you having two z's? why or what made you keep/sell your other z? or if you currently have one, what if you had another? who is your daddy and what does he do?

fastener woes.
yep, i had an old speaker lying around. this happened at night and the gardeners showed up in the morning. i went outside and i told to keep an eye out, didn't hear anything. i think i'm still missing about half. i'll attach things so i can get a better count.

clean the hard lines? fuel pump or fuel pumps?
i got the car around spring so i hadn't thought about the rain, mainly defrost. i personally have been as north as san francisco. but with my z i went up past oxnard on PCH. once she's ready i wanna go for a longer stretch. driving PCH is the best drive. i should've said "most," hehe. just carbs to the engine are out. but yea i do want to clean those hard lines. it sounds like that hard line repair shouldn't be a problem to fix that section, still not a job for me. i probably shouldn't drag something through the lines. thanks for the tips

clean the hard lines? fuel pump or fuel pumps?
that's why i stopped driving a 280z i had just gotten as a daily: fuel leak + crappy electrical tinkering = no thanks. thanks for the EFI hose tip, that makes sense. i'm gonna use those that all around. it seems like the RX7 is the way to go but i think i'm gonna hold off on it. i'd like to install when i refresh the electrical. i will add it though, read up on vapor lock plus i'm running the flat tops so it's probably help. oh and thanks for your thread on the brakes. that gave me a motivational push i needed to get back to work. just got my calipers back from PMB and it just doesn't get any better than that. to think i almost turned mine in for some reman ones.

fastener woes.
Hey all. This is gonna get me back to working on the z after a long hiatus. I have the whole front suspension off. Painstakingly wire brushed and por15. Got an ES poly master bushing kit and adjustable illumina struts. Was a lot of hard work but fun. Now getting ready to reassemble. I had all my fasteners nicely labeled in bags. Around the time I started I was given a pup. I guess he saw how much fun I was having that he wanted to help. Got home to find him inside the fastener box with the lawn covered with torn bags and scattered fasteners. That stopped everything, I thought it was the end. I recovered what I could. I was surprised to see zinc on most of them even after all this time. Researched and found info on all the fasteners for the front. I'm planning on replacing the missing ones. Down the line, new ones all around would be nice. So what's my best bet on getting them? Can't find kits for the suspension. I know I can get them from a hardware store, bolt companies, or maybe Nissan. I just don't want someone to give me a weaker grade or some IKEA bolts or something. A safe z is a good z.

clean the hard lines? fuel pump or fuel pumps?
hey guys. so i'm starting to get the ball going and start working on my 5/74 260z before actual rain starts. got some bumps. the whole fuel system is off and is gonna go back on after the front suspension is on and the tank gets cleaned. everything looks stock. it doesn't seem to make sense to me to use the same hoses after carb work. the hoses still look good but 40 years seems like a long time running. and a new mech fuel pump wouldn't hurt. so it got me thinking about a clean fuel system, or as clean as i can. so two things on the front. how do i clean the hard lines? the wrapped ones and the rails along the side that go to the rear. just straight flushing? the other is a bit of a doosie: about 2 to 3 inches of the fuel rails directly below the battery are corroded from the acid. the 2nd owner just painted over it. its not too bad, maybe just surface. doesn't leak and doesn't seem to be clogged but it's always on my mind, specially if i want a clean system. are there fixes for the hard lines? or do i look into replacing the whole rails, which doesn't sound fun at all. once i get to the rear i'll do the tank and probably the lines around there, but last time i looked it was a mess back there. if i remember correctly the elec fuel pump wasn't hooked up at all and the car was running on the mech, was running just fine. the elec is to regulate the pressure to/fro the tank? either way, should i replace/reincorporate the fuel pump or leave it as is and run on the mech? plus it can be loud... i think those are the only thing missing in the car: elec fuel pump and the heater. but in so california it's apparently unnecessary weight. any tips, comments, ideas welcomed.

hello out there in z land. big thumbs up to the so cal z's. and a hurdle.
hey all. the z's got me!! just wanted to introduce since i've been using the info in the community and am gonna need some more soon. first off i'm a newb but i love driving. i've just been a tune up and minor things kind of guy. holding the flashlight for pops, that sort of thing. not too much experience either. always had little cars, early 90s tercel and the sort. until a rear-ender killed it. so time for another car, why not a new one? got a new corolla. economical, drove it everywhere. almost paid off and a rear-ender kills it. so time for another car, new ones are solid. got another corolla. almost half paid off, you guessed it, a rear-ender kills it. so time for another car... or maybe i just shouldn't be on the road, hehe. didn't want to deal with payments and i had insurance $ so i was looking for a project. make it reliable and drive around in some style. i remember my older brother driving in a corolla and it being reliable and easy to work on. kept looking and didn't find one, ran into a z here or there and i thought "those look sweet but it's an old sports car, probably a pain." well now i needed a ride. i saw a post on a 260z, one picture, blurry as can be. not knowing anything about a z i went to check it out. this guy wanted to restore it little by little for his 10yo son. i thought that was pretty sweet, but he wasn't having it anymore. he didnt know anything about z's either not to mention he didn't even have a manual of sorts. said previous owner had it in storage and it was draining his wallet specially now that the carbs were being a problem. drove it around and it was rough, rattling everywhere, a smoker, but i saw it at about 75% "with some much needed love this thing could be great." looked under the hood, and my mind was blown. "where's the carb and what the hell are those two things?" and that's how it aaaall started. so two months later i get my pink slip. my very first pink slip where it's only my name on it. my first owned car turned out to be a z. which led to my first very own tool set. i started to learn what i could and found out lots of the good/bad about the 260z. seems like we were meant to be. i drove it everywhere i could, even though i got exhaust fumes in the cabin. driving manual again . from driving little toyotas and hondas to a z was ridiculous. the z bug strikes. i had so much fun driving it that i want this car to be with me forever and i also wanted to level up my car skills. i got her running great but the flat tops were flooding on me and i noticed oil in my spark plugs and also got tired of getting high on fumes leaking from the muffler and the rattling. so now it was time to give back the love. as of today she is on blocks with the suspension and carbs off and i haven't done anything for about 4 or 5 months. i was pilling up work like if i had experience so it was getting overwhelming but mainly cause of a wall i hit putting the suspension together, i'll thread that under suspension soon. now it's time to hurdle the wall and get the ball rolling again. oh and i did cheat on her . i missed driving a z so i bought a 280z out of bakersfield (and what an adventure that was) just so i can drive a z while my z is being worked on then sell the 280z; maybe have two z's (i don't know about having to make the decision every morning of which one to drive, but it sounds sweet). talk about the z bug. there went my funds for my 260z and now i have a 280z i don't drive because of a fuel leak and don't want to put $ into it, going back to my 260z. so i'll post that up for sale at some point here before posting else where. i saw a z sitting on the street this morning on my way to work so big thumbs up to all the z's in the sf valley in southern cal. thanks for reading see you around
