Hi Matt, Good question...The 1971 Series 1 owners manual (page 24) recommends '95 and higher'. From that it would appear the higher, the better, and that of course depends on local availability. So, adjust the timing (knocking??)accordingly. Cheers, George
  6. Hi Chris, The u-joints are for the steering shaft and sourced in the States. Cheers, George
  7. Hi, Just received my u-joint from 'Joe' at Simmons...great service BUT a killer delivery charge. The little joint cost $ 48.44 with tax and ground shipping A little online looking around and I found the exact same joint for $22 (ALL IN)!!. For those in need the joint is made by Motor Master and the specific unit is: Kawasaki ATV700 Cheers, George

Happy 43rd Anniversary!! Had the Z out for a run to celebrate. What was most remarkable was that there were no comments/complaints about exhaust fumes from my wife...no smelly clothes and/or burning eyes...ALL GONE...Period!! Why the disappearance? It has to be a secondary benefit from refurbishing the rear tail lights which was carried out over the past winter. Specifically, better sealing around the light fixtures. Cheers, George
  9. Hi, For those who would like to soak up a little more Z history and glory, there is a very nice write up in the Summer edition of Hagerty magazine. Cheers, George

More congratulations!! This afternoon I was quizzed (cross examined) by a lawyer about, 'What are you doing these days?'. I then asked him, 'what do you mean?' To this he asked the same question again. Without hesitation I responded, 'Gordon, I do what I please, when I please.' And with that, Dan, I had a very difficult time trying to contain a smirk. Enjoy!! Cheers, George

Similar temps here (north west New Brunswick) and I've been using a similar heater for my 24'x24' garage which was built in 2002. If you haven't already, consider making/installing an insulated partition to supplement your garage door even if it's insulated. I made one with R20 foam sandwiched with 1/4" plywood. Come spring I store it off the ground mounted on an exterior garage wall. While I can't remember what the materials cost, I'm sure it's paid for itself in energy savings, not to mention the comfort of 20C. Cheers, George

Going down to -10 F here tonight while parts east of here along the Atlantic coast are getting 12" of snow. On the bright side...the days are getting longer!!
  16. Hi Jim, I'd take a serious look at your re-conditioned alternator. I've got a Jan./71 using the same set with Dave's wiring. At ZCON 2103 my Z started dying...everything electrical slowed down for some mysterious reason. Long story short it, the alternator had played out. George George

Yes, I did the hot tap water method to soften up the plastic frame (nothing creative) and it worked as hoped. Also, further to you comment regarding 'nasty chemicals', the $40.00 I quoted included a $3.00 surcharge referred to as, 'Minimum Hazardous Waste Surcharge'.

Hi, Nothing too new to contribute to this forum, but thought I'd share some before and after pics on my rearview mirror refurbishment. From a web search I found and used, 'Alchemy Mirror Resilvering' in St. Paull, MN (alchemy@bitstream.net). The owner is a chap by the name of Tim. Tim charged me $40.00 which included return shipping, and he accepted PayPal. The turn around was ~ two weeks. Cheers, George
  20. Agreed....your new rims/tires combo do look great When the hibernation ends, please let us know your thoughts on how well this new set up (rims and tires) works as compared to what was replaced. George

Recently read that three out of four Canadians drivers can no longer operate an automobile with a standard transmission...go figure!!
  23. Marine varnish is a relatively soft finish. It is soft because it needs to be able to tolerate the flexing of wood when it is stressed. That said, there are harder finishes available which, at least in theory, should be equally esthetic yet more durable especially for a rigid steering wheel. With all due respect, I suggest you look into applying an epoxy for the hardest and most resistant finish. The down side to epoxy is it will cost you a little more than varnish. George

Hi, Here's a suggestion: Contact Eric (Pharaoh_01@yahoo.com) Eric made a new plastic horn button center for me and it fits perfectly. Additionally, the cost was very reasonable and he is a delightful person to work with. George
