  1. If its a clean car then go for it. Get the best kept Z that you can find and then convert it to a 5spd when you get the time. Really doesn't cost much and only takes a few days to do. Thats working slowly and by yourself. I probably have about 300.00 in my conversion but there are better deals to be had if you look around locally. Good luck

Thanks, I never would have guessed that it would be that light. The seller was estimating 120lbs so if I have this thing shipped at 75lb it saves me a bunch.

Thanks for the info about the weight. Last summer I swapped the auto for a 5spd out of a low mile 78. Last night I found a 5spd replacement for my 300zx on ebay for 49.99 so I was trying to figure what my shipping costs might be. Chuck

Does anybody know how much a 5spd weighs? Couldn't find it doing a search and I can only guess from the last time it was out of the car. Maybe 100 or 120 lbs. Its for my 300zx but that can't be very different in weight from the 5spd in my 260. Thanks in advance. Chuck

You guys are probably right about the car's original ride height being higher than anything that I had seen. The struts were worn out when I bought the car so it sat pretty low until they were changed. I wouldn't mind putting coil overs on it but not really a priority right now. Would rather try to find a turbo engine for the money. Thanks, Chuck

This is probably a more "correct" ride height.

A few years ago I had the struts replaced on my 260 and noticed that it sat quite a bit higher than it originally had with the stock worn out struts. http://www.classiczcars.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=8588&size=big&sort=1&cat=500&page=1 I have junked the front and rear crash bumpers but other than that the car should be about the same weight as stock. To me it looks like it sits higher than normal. Any ideas, Chuck
  9. A few years ago I went to a wholesale paint supplier looking for the datsun 918 paint sample. They guy had an old faded paint "chip" book from the early 70's and I recall that it was 918 and "mexican orange"on the same sample. Probably not an official datsun document so I'm not sure if its a nickname or from the factory but the name has been around for a while.
  10. I've seen 918 called mexican orange before. Most car makers have a name for a color rather than just a paint code.

If you bleed your clutch again take a piece of wood or the handle of a hammer and tap the soft hydraulic line before you open the bleed valve. It helps move the air bubbles out a little easier. I bought a one man bleeder from Discount or autozone for about 5 bucks. Kind of crappy but it works well for clutch bleeding. Does you clutch feel spongy now?

Put a new diff mount in today and noticed that I still have a bit of a "clunk" under acceleration. Also recently changed the mustache bar bushings. One thing that made a big improvement was making a bushing for the two bolts that hold the rear of the diff to the mustache bar. I found some rubber tubing the had the same ID as the studs and cut a piece about 1/4 of inch thick to insulate the part of the stud meets the mustache bar. Any one have any ideas or a better solution? Just trying to get the diff to move as little as possible, Thanks

Completed my auto to 5spd swap a few days ago with no real surprises. Only thing that I had never heard of was the small disc that rides on the crank side of the flywheel. It's on the automatics only. Once this piece was removed the swap went smoothly. I should have done this years ago. Running a 3.54 rear with 78 5spd so it does well on the highway and out of the hole. Thanks for all of the info you guys have posted on this board. Made it really easy to put a shoping list together before I got started.
  17. here is a link to a post with some of the info you're asking about http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13163 this one has gear ratioswww.geocities.com/z_design_studio/

Thanks for the info and advice. Here is what I've found doing the auto to 5spd swap in my 74 260 You need: Flywheel, pressure plate, clutch, clutch alignment tool, master and slave, hard line from master to slave hose, shifter, shifter boot, pedals(brake and clutch), longer bolts for bellhousing, different starter for manual flywheel. My 5spd came out of a 78 that had the same rear gear ratio as the 74 that its going into, so no speedo gear change is needed (I hope)
