tranny removal
Ok, maybe I'm a little slow but I lowered the tranny back on the ground and took a second look at what was going on. Turns out that on the crankshaft side of the flywheel the is a small spacer disk that rides on the end of the crank. When you remove this piece its really easy to install the pilot bushing and from then on I had no probs. Once I jacked up the tranny it went in and bolted up in minutes. All thats left is installing the pedals, shifter and bleeding the system.

I have been using an alignment tool but not having much luck. Kmack, any tricks for getting the tranny on quickly. Getting tired of bench pressing this thing

tranny removal
Removed the auto tranny today with little difficulty. Left the exhaust connected since I didn't want to pull the exhaust manifold. Pretty sure that those rusted bolts were going to break. 5 spd was pretty easy to get up there but having problems getting splines lined up I'll see if I can finish it up tomorrow. While I was in there I noticed that the flywheel bolts and the driveshaft are the same for the auto and the 5spd

Cut it out. I don't need anyone fueling my "while I'm in there" itis. Seriously, I figure thats not too far down the road.

tranny removal
Right now there is a auto in the car so maybe I can get that out and then take a look. With the torque converter unbolted I shouldn't need much room to drop the tranny down and out. getting the 5spd in might be tight.

1971 240Z Tranny swap, auto->manual QUESTIONS!
Ben, nice color on that z. I'm hoping to finsh my swap in the next few days. I'm swaping an auto to a 5spd out of a 78. The rear gears are the same so overdrive on the 5spd should be nice.

tranny removal
I'm about knee deep in my auto to 5spd swap and have a question. Is it possible to drop the tranny without removing the exhaust? Don't really want to drop exhaust since that opens a whole new can of worms. Pretty sure that exhaust studs on manifold will break if I torque on them. It looks possible but probably a big pain in the arse. Anybody done this with the exhaust still in the car. Thanks, Chuck

1971 240Z Tranny swap, auto->manual QUESTIONS!
I'm in the process of doing the same thing. I think there were 4 bolts holding the torque converter on. Remove bottom shroud and they are pretty easy to get at. Chuck

Porsche 997 officilal photo and specs
Read the other day that the most popular(most sold) new 911 is the cab with tiptronic. Not exactly sending the people at Porsche the right message for building a light weight cheaper car. I think the best bet is to buy an old 72 or so and make an RSR clone with a 3.6 Or build a modified Z with similar performance for 1/4 the cost!:classic:

For good reason it is a step backwards. The 996/Boxster identical front ends did not set the two models apart enough. This new design is a good thing, part retro was its intent. More 993ish. I agree that the Interior is bland. For that kind of money it should have more character. It can still be light weight and have style at the same time. Better hurry up if you are ever going to get one since I'm afraid that the 998 will be more like a cadillac than a sports car. BTW, I would still be happy to drive one.

The 997 is a welcome departure from the styling that has become common to the boxster and 996. Good news is that the front end is reminiscent of the 993, Porsches best looking 911. It is a start but for me much of the "sports car" feel is gone from the new Porsches. Yea, they are great cars and very fast, but not like the old light and nimble RS's. I am not complaining, I just think that Porsches shouldn't have power steering and weigh more than 3000lb's. My Z weighs less than my 911 and that is precisely why I like it so much.

The Z Car's Nemesis?
I agree. For the money NOTHING compares to the Z. If you spend a bunch more money it is still difficult to find something to call its nemisis. The Z is a sports car but it is cheap to maintain and easy to work on... go figure.

The Z Car's Nemesis?
I visit Pelican daily and that generally is not the way things are over there. Most threads are about swaps, maintance and upgrades Pelican caters to earlier 911s owned by enthusiasts that do most if not all of their own work. The new cars over there are about 15 to 20 years old so I don't think that you can call them elitest. Chuck

Carpet Kits... MSA or Vic Brit?
For what its worth, I have also bought things from Too Intense Restoration. High quality seat covers headliner and carpet sets. Troy made a mistake with a carpet component and fed exed the correct piece overnight. Could not ask for more in my opinion. Maybe I'm tired of dealing with MSA but very happy with TOO Intense.

auto to 5 speed swap
Done a few searches about 260 auto to 5speed swap. In addition to the tranny and clutch assembly, pedel, slave and master cyl, flywheel, shifter and console, would I need a different cross member and driveshaft also.
