  1. I was pulled over by a South Pasadena cop. Polite as hell, and really he was right, the car was loud. I've had a 20" resonator added to the MSA 2.5" performance exhaust and now it has a nice sound and is acceptably quiet. What I can't figure out is how the motorcycles with open pipes don't get tagged on a regular basis. Those things are far louder than my Z ever was.

Hi all, I thought I'd share a write-up I did on my recent clutch repair. Not a how-to, but more of a what's up, it still might be of interest to my fellow Z fans. Our Cars- The Datsun Project Update*|*Hooniverse
  3. Here's the destroyed plastic throwout collar, along with the steel deal I bought from the nice bearded gentleman at MSA. Go Kings!
  4. Hi all, A quick question regarding my B-model four speed. I pulled the transmission last Saturday in order to replace the clutch which had failed (throwout bearing really) and in giving the box a once-over outside the car I discovered a second electrical switch up near the shift mechanism. I'm including a pic below. The box has another two-wire connector just aft of the clutch fork, which I know is the reverse lights switch, as I had no reverse lights until I connected the loose wires to that. What I'm wondering is what is that other switch, or whatever it is, up by the shifter? Also, has anyone ever pulled a transmission and found the throwout bearing collar to have been made of plastic? Mine was, and it was destroyed from the throwout bearing disintegrating around it. First time I've seen a plastic collar. Last time on this car too I hope, I replaced it with a steel one from MSA.
  5. That is what I am thinking, especially after reading your customizing my flanged exhaust thread. Nice work BTW. If you don't mind, what glass pack model did you add? Thanks!
  6. Okay, I bit the bullet and bought the MSA premium exhaust with the stock down pipe. Before installing, I'm going to have a 12" resonator welded into the long pipe. I'm thinking of getting a Walker 24440 - Glass Pack by Walker (part#24440) / Mufflers - and having a shop weld it in. I weld like a drunk dog pisses.
  7. Thanks Arne, BTW, your history of aftermarket exhaust systems was pretty awesome.
  8. Argh! Thank you all for your feedback, it's very helpful. Right now it looks like I don't have a straight forward route to solving my noise problem. Has anyone had any experience with the MSA Twice Pipe system? Motorsport! SALE! Twice Pipes Exhaust, 70-72, 74, 240Z-260Z With Stock Exhaust Manifold - The Z Store! Nissan-Datsun 240Z-260Z-280Z-280ZX-300ZX(Z31/Z32)-350Z-370Z Parts That looks like a reasonably priced option and with two glass packs it is perhaps a quieter solution to my single Turbo Thrush, which was only $23 on Amazon so I won't cry over dumping it. I'm concerned however that should it prove too still too noisy I will have a real challenge adding a second resonator or glass pack inline due to the double our trouble nature of the set up.
  9. OKay, so I took my 1970 240Z out last night and got pulled over by the cops for being too loud. I had the week before had a Turbo Thrush muffler installed as the old one was punched full of rust holes. Now I'll admit that the car is loud, but I thought the new muffler had - you know - muffled that enough. I guess not. So, I'm wondering if adding a resonator mid-pipe might make it sufficiently quieter and keep the cops off my back? I'm thinking about either this one - Walker Exhaust 17861 Sound FX Resonator Universal : Amazon.com : Automotive or this one- Flowtech 50252 FlowTech Red Hots Glass Pack Mufflers but don't want to go to the trouble and expense if a resonator isn't going to help. I just want the car to be quiet enough that the cops don't bust me. Plus I have to deal with the stupid fixit ticket. Alternatively, does anyone have any experience with this? Motorsport! SALE! Does that mean it's so loud that it'll still get me in trouble? Sigh. Thanks in advance.
  10. SteveJ, Your walkthroughs are hugely valuable. I attempted to open up my original broken hazard switch based on your pictures and description but sadly ended up with the pot metal enclosure breaking apart. That's why I'm so hesitant to do any microsurgery on such vital and expensive to replace parts. I do appreciate all the documentation, and your circuit diagram of the hazard/TS wiring is the best I have found. Thanks for the effort!
  11. Thank you both, I will give the Deoxit a try. I will admit to being terrified of taking the turn signal switch apart and being unable to put it back together again.
  12. I have been slowly bringing my 1970 240Z back from the depths of despair where its previous owner left it and now have it running and stopping well. One area that continues to be a challenge is the flashing lights at the corners, as not all of them do. Here's the situation at present: Brake lights work both sides Running lights work all corners and front and back Head lights work Back up lights work Turn signals- Left (driver side) work both front and back, and the little clicker on top of the flasher makes a clicky noise. The green tach light illuminates as expected. Right (pass side) only the front works, the back doesn't, and there's no clicky noise from the clicker on top of the flasher. The green tach light illuminates as expected. Hazards- Flipping the hazard switch gives me flashing lights in the front, and nothing in the back. Both green tach lights flash as expected. I have a sinking suspicion that my incredibly complicated turn signal switch may be to blame, but am puzzled by the hazard switch outcome. I should note that all bulbs have been confirmed functional. Does anyone with greater experience with such things have an opinion on this scenario? I have searched the electrical forum and, while there's plenty of turn signal related posts, I haven't found any close to this issue. Muchas gracias in advance, Rob
  13. Hi Bart, I will have a bunch of pictures posted on Hooniverse.com mid-morning on Tuesday. I'm the senior editor on that site. Cheers, Rob
  14. Hi all, I have just purchased a 1970 240Z that is in kind of rough shape. Its major issues are carb tuning, electrical (no brake lights or turn signals) and a pretty good sized dent in the hood from a thoughtless parking lot patron. Aside from that. . . it's kind of a blast! You'll hopefully see more of this car on Hooniverse.com next week. Cheers, Rob
