tachometer help
hi all... long time member/lurker and have a question... i sold a tach from a 1970 series one 240z to someone overseas in Brunei, which i believe is in the philipines... it came from a non-runner so am not sure of the condition of the tach prior to sale. he installed it in his 1977 260z (remember, he's overseas) and when the car is started, the needle went up to 1k rpms and stopped. turned key off and it stayed there. the previous tach did not work at all. both tachs are 4wire tachs. he says the distributor is not points and is upgraded to electronic distributor. i've searched all threads just searching "tachometer" here and at zcar.com and haven't found anything exactly like what he describes. seems like when most tachs die they rise up to 8k rpm and stay there. a few topics on the needle sticking at various places, am thinking this is closest to his problem. his "mechanic" says the magnets inside are frozen and keeping the needle from moving. do you think it is just a matter of opening it up and lubricating? or is there some incompatability w/the two tachs? i'm tryin to help him out as best i can several thousand miles away. any help will be greatly appreciated.

240Z'S getting chopped up
the speedracer looked neat, but def not anything i'd do to mine. the other 240z they really didn't do anything to except a paint job and some carbon fiber overlays...

Idleing on an incline problem?
i'm assuming ur 280z is still FI right? have seen some carb'd vehicles having problems on inclines where the fuel falls out of the floats... does it matter how full ur gas tank is? i'm thinking that possibly when on the intake the fuel is sloshing to the back of the tank and the pump is having trouble picking up fuel. the pick up is in the front side of the tank correct? or the pick up is getting clogged w/varnish/crap on the one side and having a similar effect hope that helps...

Tools...
a magnetic tool to pick up dropped sockets, wrenches, nuts, bolts etc... any seasoned mechanic will tell you that no matter where you are working on a vehicle, if u drop something it will always come to rest at the exact center of the vehicle.... has happend to me enuff times that its almost scary how consistant it is!

Your Best (and worst) COP Stories
I was on my way back to college in northern NY... was in my friends toyota p/u speeding away up rt. 11, probably doing about 80 in a 55. my friend had no fear for getting tickets for some reason as just about every trip back to school he'd get pulled over atleast once. so anyway, we're cruising 80mph or so and we see a patrol car coming at us. we slowed down a bit but he had still got us at like 77 in the 55 i think. he came up to my friends window, very polite actually, "know why i pulled u over? license and reg... unfortunately for the speed i do need to write you a ticket..." we said "ok" and he went back to his car to write the ticket. 5 mins always feels like 30 when ur pulled over, but we waited a good 20mins before he came back up to the window. seemed like it was extra long (remember we got pulled over nearly every trip) so he comes up to the window empty handed. we look at him kind of confused becuz he had said we're getting a ticket and he didn't have one to hand us. instead he says "do you guys have a screw driver?" a screw driver?? uh no sorry... he says "well i'm terribly sorry, but while i was writing your ticket i put your license on my console, a call came over my radio, when i reached for the mic i knocked ur license down inside the console and i can't get it out. becuz of the embarrassment, i'm not going to write the ticket, but i need a screw driver to take the console apart. sicne you don't have one, could you meet me 2morrow?" of course my friend agreed. he met him out at a traffic stop the next day. guess they chatted for a few hours and seemed like a pretty good guy... told my friend "if ya ever get pulled over up here, just mention my name!"
