After some helpful discussion here I may look at replacing the engine in my 240z rather than rebuilding the original ( put that one on the backburner for when I'm retired!!) Anybody know of a good source for rebuilt or secondhand L28 (tuned or standard) engines in UK? Many thanks

SJCurtis thanks for that I thought there might not be an easy fix for this. - Bu**er!!! Decent/new mirrors have been going for quite a lot on ebay as well. I might have found a possible replacement so perhaps I'll try to remove the mirror glass on the 'floppy' one to try and repair it.

thanks for the replies guys I have another 240z engine ( from my 1972 car) so I don't NEED to rebuild the original yet, but Its one of those things that bugs ya!!!! and I'd like to know whether it can be rebuilt or whether it is too far gone. This car will probably be kept original if I can redo the original engine. Cylinder head has been chewed up and needs some welding and a new guide/exhaust valve Sorely tempted to go for L28 etc but cost might be prohibitive. Plus I don't think there are many places here in the UK that do L28's. Perhaps I'll post to find somewhere over here who knows their stuff. Hmmmmm!!!! got me thinking. I can always swap the original engine back in if I rebuild it in the future. SJCurtis I'll get you my HS numbers shortly

  6. Hi guys Well I decided to have a look at the original engine from my 1970 240z a couple of weeks ago and I 've got it partly stripped. Problems is engine dropped a valve before I bought it which has damaged the E31 head and smashed one piston. My first thought was to get the knackered bore sleeved and to buy one new piston ( which are apparently still available) and a full ring set. And get the block tanked to get all the bits of broken piston out. However the engine has done at least 120,000 miles ( could be 220,000 miles!!!!), and only replacing one piston seems a bit of a false economy if the rest of the engine is starting to wear. And I was concerned that fitting one replacement piston should not be done anyway as perhaps replacement pistons should only be fitted as a set of 6? I was thinking whether to overbore it for 280z pistons but wouldn't the compression then be too high ( particularly with an E31 head.) Any assistance gratefully received.

NickF I have just bought some repro plastic toolboxes from ebay. I'll let you know how they compare to the originals when I get them

talking of the hand throttle in the console, they were included as standard equipment on early UK cars. My ex california z has provision for it in the console but not the hardware. I was going to buy a spare choke cable setup and try to get the hand throttle working on mine. By the way my rear deck does not have tool dors but it does have 2 gaping holes where some dork decided to put cutouts for some speakers!!!!!! And also 2 speaker cutouts in a brand new rear hatch carpet!!!! The carpet is $110 new from MSA - I could've cried.

  12. Apologies if this has already been covered, but will the S12 calipers fit with the standard 240z steel wheels? I know the S12w ones are too wide. I know the standard wheels don't look too great but my plan is to refit them for shows occasionally

My 240z has the original driver's door mirror on it, but the mirror section 'flaps' in the wind when driving, as the adjuster is too loose. I can't see any obvious way of stopping this short of buying a new one!!! ( seen how much they are going for on ebay!!!!) I'd be grateful for any help/fixes to get me out of this blurred mirror nightmare. (Is that a car behind me, or a bike, or a house!!!!)

Lance I don't suppose you know what the thread of the bolts you bought were? I know they are 10mm but they are not the same thread as the other 10mm bolts on the car Err!!! I've just realised I posted in the 'for sale section' Doh!! I have been a z owner since 1988 and I second your thoughts about wishing I'd been driving it all that time. I think I've managed about 3 years out of the last 15!!!! regards Andrew

Hi all Just started rebuilding the original engine from my 240z. I'm trying to get some assistance re removing the front pulley. I ve managed to get the large bolt undone by blocking the crank with a piece of wood inside the crank case and using a 2 foot extension on my socket handle, but I'm not sure how to get the pulley off. The haynes manual says something about not using a normal 2/3 leg puller on the pulley and shows a picture of some special tool that bolts up to 2 bolt holes on the front face of the pulley. Any assistance gratefully received AndrewB 240z LHD in UK
