Hardway, you know it was a great idea when someone steals it and claims it for their own! Found this posted on 240 260 280 lovers forum on FB a day after you posted it here.

Sad to see another Z go, Glad to keep a driver!

Ah, the feeling of success. Like a thousand tiny monkeys off your back.. I love that feeling. Just remember it when you get to the spindle pins.

Holy Cow! Starting bids 70 C or $115? For a used (think cooties) print shirt? That's a weeks worth of Datsun T's. I need to ask more for my used clothes at yard sales.

Sounds like you are in a repair or replace situation with your Headlight switch. There are quite a few threads here on how to clean/refurbish your 280 headlight and turn signal arms. Just do a quick search. There is also a fellow, Dave Irwin, that does a very good job of restoring these and other Z electrical parts. You can find him on Facebook. There are plastic components in the Headlight and Turn signal arms. Pushing harder is usually not recommended thus the possibility of the need for replacement. Good Luck!

MSA satin black Konig Rewinds are coming.. need tires

Sorry, but visually this was bugging the crap out of me. It's a disease kinda' like these cars are. Yes, the front is a little higher than the back. The tilt of the photo accentuates that. It's an technique that used to be used in "before and after" advertising. Not at all saying it was intended but I just had to fix it to give a better representation. . This one is closer to reality minus the lens distortion. Carry on Gentlemen! -
@rcb280z Hey fellas, I saw these a while back. http://skillard.com/products/280z-stainless-steel-inner-scuff-plates Pricey? Yes, but they are stainless. I got an original pair off ebay when I was looking for something like 36. But it's been a while. They still show up sometimes. My Nissan dealer just changed owners. The last time I called them and asked for specific part #'s, they asked "you've gotta' what?…..". You'd have thought I was asking for something for a Yugo.

Another welcome! If the body is good, you get to start right in with the good stuff like the engine. But don't forget the brakes. It's more important to stop than it is to go.

Looking at this 280z for first project car, need advice

For that particular 280, just from the few pics, IMO I wouldn't offer more than 1500 tops if all the planets were in line. And that's if if ran and could drive it home. Mainly because you would spend at least 7K just to get it safely back on the road, plus whatever else it will require, interior suspension, brakes. The list goes on…… and then there's body and paint. As far a looking for a project Z (they are all projects by the way, even if they are "finished") a lot depends on what year and condition. Series one 240s all original with matching #'s currently go for the most money. Everything after that kind of works on a sliding scale. 260's seem to be worth less even though they were only sold in the US for one year. There are still quite a few 280's out there that are in fair shape. ZX's can be even cheaper but the prices have climbed on all the the Z's lately. I don't know where you are posting from but location also makes a difference. West coast cars seem to be reasonable to us east coast folks just for the rust factor alone. Wheee! just gave you some ball park figures that seem about right. Keeping those #'s in mind you can approach your future Z with two thoughts in mind. You can bring one back from the crusher and get the satisfaction of saving a Z and it will become "your" baby. A lot of us have done that. Or you could search for one that is mostly done. You'll still find things to fix/restore but the work will be significantly less. There are quite a few I've seen in great condition around the 8-15K range that I know the builder/restorer are losing money on. Much like if I were to have to sell mine right now . Spend your conscience and what you are comfortable with wallet wise. If you get infected like us, it won't matter in the long run. -
Looking at this 280z for first project car, need advice

I agree with the others. Probably the lack of pics is due to hide a lot of missing pieces (even the horns are missing). Certainly not a 4K car. That being said, I've seen worse. It could be restorable but I would have to see it in person and offer much, much less. I'd keep looking. -
How Do I hate Rebuilt Components? Brake Booster

Took the Z out today for a few miles today. 74 degrees and Sunshine in GA today. February. go figure. Right off the bat got challenged by a Honda Civic breadbox (83'-87') with a dangling muffler. PA LEEZ! In all fairness, it did have some kind of LED lights zip tied to the grill.

I actually have a manifold from a 77' on my bench but I haven't been successful as to removing the egr tube from it. I do know the nut is 24mm, or should I say was…… It's really on there.

Not a big deal, but Jai, remember to order shifter bushings also. They're very inexpensive.
-
When we started out the car was just about on empty. Jai did not fill the tank, she just put in a couple of gallons. It started up just fine and very shortly after, like 500 ft., it just shut down suddenly like you mentioned, like turning it off. No rough running. We waited about 5-10 mins and it fired back up. These are the very same symptoms that happened before. I'm seriously thinking that there might be water in her tank again and it should probably be drained like ZH mentioned. Until that happens, I've read that putting in a bottle of 100% isopropyl alcohol should help displace the water. You can go to the dollar store or where ever and get is for less than a dollar. Jai, don't worry about the Dist cap. I don't think it will make a difference just yet. The clutch is in more need.
-
Ok, so I found some time to go check on Redbird with limited tools. Jai had purchased new plugs and I replaced them, They were very much in need. I visually checked all the connections to the switches and they were all good. Checked the ECU connections, all good. Everything still had dielectric grease that SteveJ had put on. I replaced a couple of fuel intake hoses at the fuel filter that were a little cracked. Also, I replaced the Fuel Filter and rotor button that Jai had purchased. I did not replace the Distributer cap, mainly because we didn't have a new one, but I did scrape the contact points. When prowling around I noticed the BCDD wire was disconnected and reconnected it to the harness. We started it up and purred like a kitten, nice and smooth. Next we took it down the road about 3 miles so we could hear the roaring Jai had mentioned. It's the clutch slipping, plain and simple. I could give it some throttle at shift and could just feel it. You hear the Engine rev but the scenery doesn't go by any faster. That's a really expensive thing for Jai and It's slipping bad enough to be a high priority. Unfortunately I don't have the capability to do that for her. Now, here is the other issue, We dove it to the gas station to put in some gas. Everything is running fine except for the clutch. When leaving the gas station to push it a little harder, maybe 500ft away, about 2500-3000 rpm (no tach), it just shut down. We pulled over and tried to restart but no luck. Her Fuel pressure gauge was reading about 15 PSI. Even when trying to start . When it runs, it stays around 30 PSI. We let it sit for a little while I was trying to think. I could hear the fuel pump and all the fuel lines were good. It was getting spark. I didn't check the air filter, but it seemed to be ok. I was starting to think it was temp related because that is right about the time when the temp gauge got to to operating temperature. It did not overheat. After cooling down a little it started right up, back to 30 PSI. It was getting dark. We started back on the road approaching a red light. The engine didn't shut down but I thought it wise to let it cool a little longer before stopping in traffic. It was one of those moments when I knew I didn't want to get stuck at a red light and decided pull into before said gas station with the clutch slipping (badly) and all of a sudden the horn pad falls into my lap all while thinking about the engine temp. I had a little sensory overload. We made it safely to a parking spot and let it cool a little longer and an underwear check. Anybody have a spare horn pad spring so that does happen again? She's missing that piece. We made it back to Jai's house (3-4 miles) at dark. Anyone have Ideas, the water temp sender and sensors were replaced a little over a year ago, but not the thermotime switch. The previous problem with Redbird shutting down (10-11/15?) wound up being bad gas with water in it.

I can't begin to tell you how may hours/days/months/years I've spent in the darkroom. The smells of Dektol and Fixer are instantly reminded to me. Dennis is right, once you find the right buyer. That microscope thing you mention sound like what is used to focus with, a grain focuser. Reminds me of an old joke. Two girls are watching a photographer making a photograph with one of the girls explaining to the other each step the photographer is doing. And she says "next, he's gonna Focus." The girl next to her looks shocked and says "Bouf Us?" Sorry, I had to let that one out……... I've still have all my old stuff too, except for the enlarger.

The point about the 280 is that they are built a little stronger, more refined if you will, than a 240 and like Hardway mentioned, more plentiful therefore currently less money than a 240. You'll get essentially the same experience driving any Z of that era compared to todays standard including the lack of safety. I wouldn't say 240s are classier. They are a little quicker and snappier, but they still aren't a GTR. Neither is a 260 or a 280. I appreciate your want. Everybody here on this forum has it. We wallow in it on a daily basis. I encourage you to scratch the Z itch but do it with a little forethought. Have something you can depend on and drive in rain also. The fact of the matter is that almost all of us have a modern(ish) vehicle to DD (mine is Toyota Highlander) and these Z' are a passion to us. Safety is one of those things that seem's to come to mind right about the time you realize you have responsibilities to someone other than yourself. If your girlfriend gets a title change, that's something to think about. Now if you'll excuse me, there seem's to be kids in my yard that need runnin' off…..

I believe that picture is the location for a 240. My 77' has them mounted higher and facing each other connected to the bumper brackets. This picture of a aftermarket horn shows the right location. A stock horn would be facing camera here. I have stock horns now, If you need a picture I can get one later.
