  1. Yeah...I mean, that looks like it was one of the options with the comp boxes.... http://www.zhome.com/ZCMnL/tech/GearRatios.html I think I'm just gonna keep this trans and save myself the headache of trying to sell it and find another, rebuild that one...etc... I doubt with the wide ratios it's too valuable to vintage racers. But, I still need to find a synchro ring that works.
  2. Ok, if I assume 4th is 1:1 and divide 1 by .710....then multiply the other ratios by that 1.4xxxx figure....the ratios fall into place and it's a wide ratio.... 32010-N3030 3.321 2.077 1.308 1.000 0.864 (wide ratio)
  3. Any info on the fluid is good. I think the Redline MT-90 is what may have caused my steel 2nd gear synchro to fail so quickly. Mine are definitely the servo style synchro as shown here on the right vs the warner style on the left... Ok, so the trans guy counted the teeth on the gears....this is super confusing..... 1st- 33 Main 19 Counter=2.357 2nd- 28 Main 19 Counter=1.473 3rd- 26 Main 28 Counter=.928 4th- 22 Main 31 Counter=.710 5th- 19 Main 31 Counter=.613 This makes for really odd ratios that don't match up to anything I see listed. What am I missing? Cause this would mean 4th and 5th are both overdrive. I know that isn't right. The car wasn't that "long legged" when driving it. At 70 it was turning 3.5k in 5th on the highway.
  4. Thanks guys. I'll get the ratios identified on Monday and take some pics and get it listed. I still do need to figure out what synchro ring goes in there too And if anyone does know of a wide ratio five speed that someone wants to let go of...let me know!
  5. ^Point taken. So, where is the best place to advertise such a trans to interested parties? Also, anyone know of an available wide ratio 5 speed?
  6. Thanks! I found some porsche 915 synchro rings online...so the ring is separate from the gear part of the synchro on these, correct? http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/181976027736?ul_noapp=true&chn=ps&lpid=82 I do know that vs. my auto trans, this 5 speed has much lower revs (800-1000 less) on the highway in 5th than in 3rd in the auto. 3rd in the auto is 1:1...so this must be one of the two overdrive versions of the trans. I'll have him count the teeth on Monday or stop back by myself. I guess if someone is able to point me in the exact direction of what Porsche part i need....I'm good. Yeah, debating if I'd sell this trans or not now...Might be a nice match with the race built L28 that I'm currently putting in.
  7. Another question....if finding synchros for this would be too hard/impossible....can I swap the worn 2nd one with 5th....and then using the correct fluid...would I be ok?
  8. Wow, ok, lots of info to digest here. Thanks guys! So....can I get these same synchros anywhere? Good to know on the fluid...I just never knew what I was dealing with I guess. Probably why it started grinding. I did run this trans for about 3K miles this last year. I can't remember what the rpm vs. speed was when cruising to give an idea of 5th gear. Here is a quick video of the last time I drove it with the L24...maybe this gives an idea or ratios roughly? I'm using the 3.54 rear end that came with the car since it's was originally an auto. Funny side note since now it sounds like this trans is rare....I paid $180 for it. It came with a Kamerai light weight flywheel (which I also didn't realize at first) ,which I sold for $250-300..can't quite remember, because i just wanted a stock clutch and for the car to be easy to drive on the street. Now all this...what a find! IMG_5260 by blodi, on Flickr
  9. Ok so I stopped by the trans shop today to have a look at things myself. Just as he described the synchros were all black. I don't know if these are what "black fiber" synchros are, they seemed to be metal. The 5th gear synchro looked exactly the same. The brass ones that came with the kit I bought indeed seemed to be too small. So I ordered up the Nissan ones from Courtesey and hopefully they can be installed. If the ones in my trans currently are the NLA 5th gear black fiber ones...well I'll have 3 for sale soon.
  10. Clutch master, slave and clutch itself are all a year and half old with maybe 3K miles on them as I put all new stuff in when I swapped the car from auto to manual.
  11. And yeah, I realize the labor will be the more expensive part. I've never torn down a trans before and figured I'd have enough on my plate doing the engine swap...now...turns out I'm mainly just waiting on the trans.
  12. Not much progress here...still waiting on my trans (detailed in the other thread)....and a couple other small parts for the manifold waterlines. I did install MSA's poly steering coupler though the other night. Then I looked down at my steering rack bushings and decided there is no better time than now to replace/upgrade them to poly. So I ordered those, stainless brake lines...and a JDM horn pad for good measure Hoping to get the bushings in this weekend. I also want to open up the ports on the intake manifold and header a bit to match the new head. The intake ports have been opened up about ~3mm by my measurement. 13. I was using Redline MT90 fluid in it the trans. I'm fine buying all 4 new Nissan brass synchros if it keeps the trans happy for a long time. 2nd was pretty much impossible to get into without grinding while downshifting unless you were almost at a stop. From 1st to 2nd it would be "ok" if you really gave it a lot of time.
  14. Gotcha. Ok. So do you think id be ok just getting the nissan synchros? Do you think the bearings and seals are ok from the kit I ordered? Thanks for the Courtesy link too. That certainly shaves a chunk off of the price. Thanks for all the help. Maybe I just need to stop back by the shop and take a look for myself since he's hard to get on the phone.
  15. This was the kit I purchased and supplied btw. http://m.ebay.com/itm/371349852020?_mwBanner=1 I left a message for the trans guy today so we will see what he finds when he dives in further.
  16. Yeah, That's what I was sure it was. But I'm still a bit new to these cars. I'll press the guy to pull it apart further and maybe send me some pics. With New Years and the weekend he's been out of the shop.
  17. ^Interesting. Here are the only pics I have of the trans in question..... IMG_5357 by blodi, on Flickr IMG_5358 by blodi, on Flickr IMG_5361 by blodi, on Flickr
  18. Oh and I got the rebuild kit online, possibly eBay. I'll have to look it up.
  19. I'll tell him to dive in and tear it down tomorrow. Maybe that will answer more. I think he spotted the difference right away and hit pause on doing anything more. He seems like a really knowledgable guy. The trans was grinding 2nd like crazy so that's why I wanted to get it rebuilt to begin with.
  20. Sorry. I mean that he opened the transmission and found that there are apparently black fiber synchros for all five gears in place. So when he opened the rebuild kit and saw the brass ones that's when he knew something was up I don't know the history of the trans since I bought it from a guy that was just parting it out of a car that he had never had running and was just using for parts.
  21. So, I dropped off my 5 speed trans at the local shop here for a rebuild while I do my L28 swap. I bought a rebuild kit in advance which I dropped off with the trans. I bought the trans about a year and a half ago when I swap my car from an auto to manual. The tech called me today and asked about the rebuild kit having brass synchros...I told him I knew these trans had 1-4 in brass and the 5th gear sychro was a fiber disc of some sort that is apparently not available anymore. He said "well all 5 sychros are that black fiber material". So we are both puzzled. Did the 5 speeds ever come from the factory with all 5 sychros in the black fiber? He seems to think the new brass ones won't work as they are a different size. So maybe this trans was modified? It did come with a lightweight flywheel. It seems like I might be SOL on getting this trans rebuilt if that is the case and I'll be looking for another 5 speed.
  22. Good luck! I wish I had my trans...i'd have this thing fired up too most likely by New Years. But shouldn't be much longer after that. Yeah! I actually ordered a Performance Products version, only to realize later that there was already the Nisaan comp one on the engine. Bonus! Yes, yes I did. It was the ideal location for the fuel line routing and for the factory fuel pump wire hook up. But man, I didn't realize how hard that would be to drill through. I didn't want to put any holes through the subframe at all and try to figure out if I could get nut on the back of the attachements or worry about introducing a possible spot for rust to start since the whole underbody is rust-proofed.
  23. I've been making some great progress the last couple days here that I've had off and had the house to myself. I installed the electric fuel pump and got it all hooked up. Took forever for me to drill through the swaybar bracket to mount the pump. But got in and replaced all the fuel hose back there too. Got the Technoversions diff snub mount in too. That took a bit of work to wrestle the bracket into place. Then yesterday I got a bunch of stuff steam cleaned up/painted up/polished up. Rebuilt my carbs with the Z Therapy kit, got the studs off my old intake onto the N36 intake. Then I test fitted everything together. Still waiting for a few little parts from MSA that I realized I needed or should be replaced...and still waiting for my trans, but other than that...some great progress. 24. So can I put the header on first and then still get the trans on?
  25. MSA states not to use the stock one with headers?? ... http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/classic19a/10-2525 Honestly, I haven't opened mine yet to see what it's made out of. I guess that's my first step haha. It sounds like maybe they used to have ones that were paper and then in roughly '05 they changed it to an asbestos type material?
