Flywheel Bolt Size and Help!
Looks like I will need to put a helicoil in at least one of my crank/flywheel holes. They are not out yet, so I don't know the size and thread. I am sure there are lots of smart folks out there that can tip me off so I can order the right parts in advance. Also I will need new flywheel bolts. So any advice on buying those would be appreciated also. Thank you for your knowledge and help! John

Flyweel Bolt Problem
Thanks for the tip Zed Head. Looks like helicoils are in my future. I like the idea of the plastic wedges. They just opened a new big Harbor Freight near my home. I searched on their web page and can't find them. Do you have a picture you could post so I could show it to the guys at the store to help locate?

Flyweel Bolt Problem
Hello Guys, I am hoping that someone might be able to help me out here. I've gotten good advice previously here that has been very helpful. What I have ~ '72 240Z. It has an L28 motor. I found a semi close ratio 5 spd that I am swapping in. Pulled the tranny. And my philosophy is when you are that deep, replace the clutch set. Looked like the flywheel needs to be resurfaced but the rear engine main seal seems to be leaking so should do everything while I am in that deep. So, here is the problem. Did a lot of PB blaster to hopefully get things ready to loosen up. One flywheel bolt loosened up. The next one spins. It doesn't come out any at all. I can turn it with a ratchet tightening or loosening, but it doesn't do either. It won't move from it's position. I stopped there. My thoughts are that I should try to get the rest of the bolts out then put a pry bar behind the flywheel while turning this bolt to remove it. Any thoughts on that? Also, do you know if there are thread inserts in the crank for the threads? I hope there are! Otherwise, I am hoping that the bolt is striped and not the crank. Another possibility is that the PO put red lock tight in there and it is locked to an insert if there is one. All of your help would certainly be appreciated. Go to get my baby back on the road! Thanks for your help, John

DIY: How to Recover Your Z Seats - LOTS OF PICTURES
I am going to do my seats with the same foam. I have not taken the seats out yet as I want to have everything necessary before doing so. My question, there are a lot of different size hog rings available. What size is used on these seats. The smallest I have found are 1" and I think that is probably what I need. Any advice on which to get? Thanks, John

Timing - idle rpm?
I found that a PO had changed the distributor on mine. I had it out to clean things up so that the weights and vacuum advance pieces could move again. They were pretty gummed up. The dist. is a D612-53. It has 12 degree weights giving it 24 degrees advance (actually was 25 when we put a light on it but only 1 degree). Also since it has a L28 motor and L24 pulley, we had to locate TDC with a dial indicator then put the appropriate mark on the pulley and indicator. Pulled and blocked off the vacuum advance hose then set the timing at 10-12 degrees at 550 rpm. Give me a total of 35-37 degrees at high rpm. Re-attached the vacuum and she's done. Note that all of the above should be done before balancing and adjusting the carbs for best results. Now with just a little choke she starts on 1st try and can take the choke off almost right away. Screams like a raped ape going down the road. My $0.02 John

Mystery Transmission ID help needed!
Thank you for the info EuroDat. The more info I have the better. I just checked the transmission. The bell housing seems to be slightly tilted to the right like my Z motor and with that, it brings the shifter to the vertical position. So, if you are right, either the bell housing was changed at some point or the transmission is from 620 truck. The chart that I have shows the same ratios for 81-83 200SX and 74-80 620 truck. The aluminum spacer is the only one I have seen. Anyone else that has any info to share would be appreciated. John

Mystery Transmission ID help needed!
Hello all. I need help from you Datsun CSI folks trying to identify the 5spd transmission I bought for my ’72 240Z. Here’s the scoop It has one mounting ear on the tail shaft. Has the long shifter mount. Those being said, it would appear to be a close ratio 81-83 5 speed. This is where the mystery begins. This tranny has the filler plug on the driver side of it. So maybe it is from an 810/Maxima. Further, the spacer between the front half/bell housing side and the tail shaft is made of aluminum not steel. Also,it has both a neutral switch and a back-up switch. My buddy and I have done the test turning the input shaft 20 times and counting the revolutions of the tail shaft in each of the 5 gears. Granted, we didn’t have a degree wheel on the tail shaft, but the numbers we came up with are not close to matching up with any of the ratios that we have been able to find. Here are the rotations and ratios that we came up with during our exploration. 1st 5.6 rotations ~ 3.63 2nd 8.8 rotations ~ 2.27 3rd 14.125 rotations ~ 1.41 4th ~1.00 5th 24.625 rotations ~ .812 I am liking the ratios with a good 1st gear for take off and also the overdriven 5th gear for highway. But! What is this transmission from? I am definitely going to put it in the car, but curiosity has us wondering what it is and where we might get more of them or parts for repairs! Any help would certainly be appreciated! John
