ahhhh... ok. makes sense now. i'm not too familiar with the 510's. although, it was odd looking at the bottom side of my car and having someone say it was a 510...:stupid:

hey z-guy, was that the corvette IRS swap on the rear end??? that sure as s**t doesn't look datsun-esque...
  3. glad to hear fstr is doing better. my thoughts are with him and his family as well.

right now, yes, she is a stock motor. i know they won't give me anything over the EFI for now, but, in the future i am planning on an overbore, flat tops, cam, headers, etc... i was out driving her this weekend ( ) and, around 1/4-2/3 throttle there is a horrible flat spot, it doesn't matter on engine RPM's. however, if i go past it, she takes off. is this from the idle jet being too small? i talked to some people around town, they said to adjust the accel pump for more stroke. also, she has a slight lack of top end power. my father is a machinist, he said that he would take the chokes into work and size them to 32mm (up from the 30mm). i also checked the plugs, looks to be running lean...

ok... here's the current carb set up.... idle jet - 55 main jet - 132 Pump Jet - 33 air corrector - 210 emulsion tubes - 7772.8 needle valve - 1.50 30mm chokes is this workable???

thanks guys, i'll give this a shot tonight. how are these jets measured? do the sizes go up by half mm at a time? unfortunatly, at this time at least, my Z is my daily driver (until i find another car this summer), and i'm out of college in a week. sooooo........ getting her running 'good enough' is kinda at the top of my list right now:stupid: i'll find my jet settings that i currently have now and post them tonight to see what u guys think...
  7. that roof worries me. it looks caved signifigantly. also, the roof is a key structural member on these cars. the only way i have seen for straightening roofs that works well is to use a sort of rivet gun that leaves a large wire extending from it, and using a slide hammer to pull the dents. VERY hard to get it to look right.

i need help! i finally got my Z running with the dellortos, and she sounds cool!!!! however, one problem.... when i punch the gas, it bogs horribly bad and tries to stall. if i accelerate slowly, it works ok. both of these are under no load. under load, around 2500-3000 rpm's it just stops accelerating and looses all power. if i put in the clutch and pump the gas, eventually she catches and then takes off like no tomorrow! i believe the emulsion tubes are too lean for the application. does anyone know where to buy them or does anyone have some they'd be willing to sell??? i tried CB Performance in california. ordered tubes and filters. today, i just get filters and find out that they don't sell the tubes anymore! couldn't believe they actually let me order them to begin with if they didn't have them, or that they are listed on their site. i called them today, sounds like they've been out for a while. i've had probs with these guys with other orders, but they are the only ones i can find with dellorto parts:mad: you think they'd call to let you know the story beforehand, ya know? does anyone have any suggestions?

heyheyhey, be nice to our bumpers! it's not our fault nissan slapped them on there! just kidding, they aren't my favorite either (i use them as a bench when i'm hanging out with friends!). i've been considering either shaving them (leave an open mouth sort of thing in the front), or using the bumper elimination kit...

i forgot to add this bit earlier.. you gotta remember, these motors are 25 years old. they were built long before synthetic or synthetic blends were even concieved of. also, the current API rating for oil is "SL". pretty much just meaning it's the latest and greatest. so, in other words, as long as the oil you buy has the API badge on it reading higher than SG, your motor is more than protected. the API badge just means it met the baseline for the oil, much like the ASE certifications for mechanics, not too hard to come by. different oils to have different additives though... in high mileage engines, i like to use Valvoline Max-life. it has some additives that cause the seals to swell slightly to reduce oil leaks (front/rear mains, valve, sometimes the oil pan gasket, but rarely!) and consumption. i personally like this oil, as do many of my friends. however, this oil is ONLY for engines with 75K+ since their last rebuild, or, motors that have been sitting a long time and most likely have dry seals (like you just took it out of storage after MANY years and the oil consumption won't go down). if you use this on a newer motor, not good.. the seals can swell and warp causing a big mess, not nececerrilly threatening to the motor, providing that the oil doesn't leak out of the warped seals and doesn't choke off the oil supply to the valve guides... so, again, 10 different guys, 10 different answers! :stupid:
  12. I'm in rochester (where I90, 490, 590, 390, and 104 all collide!!!), where abouts is the car?

for the couple of pounds an oil cooler is going to add, more than worth it for the insurance it's gunna give you. if you're looking for some weight to shed, attack the interior. get rid of the spare tire, that's make up more thanthe difference. carry a can of fix-a-flat, i wouldn't trust that old spare tire myself anyway... think about it, race cars worry about weight in ounces, yet they have coolers for just about everything concievable..

i personally use valvoline 10W-40 along with the fram HP-1 (i believe it is 1) oil filter. that's the orange type of fram racing filters that doesn't have the grippy stuff on the end. most likely overkill (next step up would be a K&N filter for 10 bucks!). the purolator pure-one filters should be fine. as far as weather goes, in rochester temps range from 80 - high 90's depending on the area's mood... last week it was 65 one day, snowed the next morning! gotta love it! i have also heard using straight 30W oil is the best... ask 10 mechanics get 10 answers!
  15. a brass wire wheel worked great! used gunk/kerosene to get the bulk off, then went all over it including the outside. works great, and brass is softer than the aluminum so it won't mess it up on ya!

don't use tranny oil (well, gear oil..). it's viscosity is WAY too thick for the application. most gear oils are of the 80W-90 variety, and you should be using 20wt. in your SU's. ATF may work, that stuff's pretty thin... i would goto a parts store and just see if you can find a quart of SAE 20 oil. if they don't have any on the shelf, ask them if they have some in back or if they can order it. might be a hunt nowadays. i havn't seen any 20wt. oil at our local parts stores (and i worked at one) in a while. victoria british and motorsport both sell carb oil, although, i'm not sure how much they sell... would machine oil work? hmmm..... i dunno...
  17. hey! glad to have you here! i am 19, and a Z was my first car (bought her at 17). man, i couldn't be happier with her! just watch out for rust, that's pretty much all i can say! the HP and torque ratings seem kinda meeger compared to V8's, but, with a car that only weighs around 2600 lbs, it's more than enough to have fun with! my old man always busts my balls cuz his superbee was quicker, but, i turn around and ask him how fast he could take a turn . to give you an idea as to what i spent, i'll cut and paste a post i made on aother board, cuz i don't feel like thinking about how much i spent again! --- anyways, 1000 bucks isn't bad for a 280Z. i bought my 78 for 1200, and it needed paint BAD. had some weird rust spots, but, for a NY car, not bad in my opinion. left alone, would've made a good daily driver. fairly clean and straight. but, then there was the work i sunk in.. motor- about 400 bucks with the discount from working at Advance Auto, included gaskets, bearings, rings, paint (gotta make her pretty!) a couple small parts and such. also, lap the valves when it's apart, not hard to do and worth the effort! tranny- got many of the bearings at next to no cost.. so only 20 bucks! bwa hahahha! amazingly, the synchro's and everything looked brand new! but the nut on the counter shaft somehow spun off, burried itself into the rear of the case, which let a couple or bearings take a crap... all the internals were fine though! body work- $100 in stripper, probably another $100-$250 in other supplies (bondo, sand paper, etc) wasn't really needed, and i took a couple of shortcuts (the rear quarters could've used replacing, which i will do!!!), but, live and learn! paint- $600 for basecoat/clear coat. that's not including the aircompressor/hvlp gun that my dad and i bought.. another plus about restoring, excuses for more tools!!! mom didn't like it though:devious:! suspension- around $600. that included struts (just oem replacement till i have money for tokico's), motorsport springs, and polygraphite bushings. you may not need to do this, depends on the shape of your car. but, mine REALLY needed to be done. many bushings were practically nonexistant interior- only about 100 bucks... cheeped out on the carpet till i have the money for a real one... body seals- i believe they were 220. if you're going to paint on a car this old, might as well do it right and replace all the old weather stripping.. makes the paint job neater too. no matter how hard you try, there's always one small spot that gets paint on the rubber... so pull the windows and such now! so, to this point, i'll probably say all in all around 3200 or so sunk into her (ballpark, +/- couple hundred bucks for assorted parts like lines/hoses/metal etc.)... but, i've made more additions! dellorto carbs- $179 off ebay... the italian dude is always selling 'em! 30 bucks shipping to the states though... rebuild kits for carbs- 90 bucks other carb parts (airhorns, flow meter, etc.)- 120 bucks intake manifold- $315 new from JAM engineering (distributor of the cannon manifolds) holley red fuel pump- $50 from ebay holley fuel pressrue regulator- $30 bucks from a local speed shop then we have gaskets, fuel lines, fittings, etc. i'll say around another 50-70 dollars there... man, i didn't realize i was spending this much money! although, i sold all my EFI stuff, got back around 220 from all of that.. not bad, but i shoulda parted out the manifold instead of selling it all together.. oh well, live and learn! however, ebay is a great place to find good deals! also kinda cool playing with the dellorto's... i'm the kinda guy who likes to do some of the weird stuff and not do the normal things (webers and mikuni's for example). so, uncharted territory here i come! probably woulda cost about the same to do a 350 swap at this point though... i had two different tranny's (400 and 350 both with shift kits) to choose from for free! oh well, that straight six just looks way too cool with triple side draughts!!! hmm.. after looking at the amount added up, looks like i'm forgetting a bunch of stuff probably.... but, i'm willing to spend the money, and when i get some, it burns a hole in my pocket... like the carbs! didn't need them, the EFI was fine. but, carbs are just toooooooo cool! how much you are willing to spend is up to you! the sky is literally the limit! --- another cool thing with these cars and being a teenager is many of the rice kids don't even know rice when they see it!!! then they act like they know what you're talking about when the see nissan on the valve cover...

as far as the states, at the time, we were used to these monsterous land yachts with huge motors that could go like crazy in a straight line... everyone knew about porsche and the such, but, how could you afford them in good consionce (sp?) knowing that there was a 1970 Dodge Superbee 440 six-pack on a lot for only about 3K? then here comes this wee japanese sports car, front discs (still relatively unheard of in the muscle car world... drums baby!), fully independant suspension, great handling, great on gas (compared to 3 mpg that my dad got out of his suped up Bee!), and, best of all, quick to boot! this was the begging of the end of the muscle car era when the Z was released, so, many felt that they could keep their passion alive if they bought the Z. and, because many of the greats were two seaters (yes, porsche's have 4 seats, but, geez, those seats are barely big enough for a baby!), why not go for a two seater? there was already a boat in the garage for the family, time for a toy! also, most people i talk to here think that the 2+2 is ugly as sin, but, we love them just the same! i dunno, perhaps a fragmented explanation there....

i realize freedom of speech is garunteed to all, i am not debating that with you. i tip my hat at men such as yourself who served our great nation. i simply hate it when people belittle others based upon them doing their job, be it following orders, defending freedom, or just having a job in which some people believe is wrong (ex: abortion providers, but, that's a whole other can of worms in and of itself). and, protesting is not a job in my opinion... i don't advocate beating on people simply for the heck of it because they don't agree with me. i just don't understand how people can still think diplomacy is the answer. i mean, we gave this guy twelve years to disarm, and he danced around it. then, in the last few days before the war, he was giving token missiles up to make it look like he was, when he wasn't. he was obviously stalling. now junior is finishing what daddy started. you may believe me to not be standing by my own beliefs in this, that, sometimes combat is neceserry to reslove an issue because i choose not to enter the military. however, because this started as a somewhat lighthearted statement, i'll end it with what is intended as a light hearted statement. it would still be nice to prove a point to some of the activists with a square punch in the nose. :classic: no hard feelings bro *handshake*

whoa... i wasn't trying to pick a fight or anything. i have worked for the protection of others, but not via the military. i come from a family of volunteer firefighters. it may not be the same as expiriencing artilery fire, but flames and sagging floors are scary as all living hell as well. gotta love the people when you show up on scene and they are like "what took you so long to get here!?!?" when it was people who just plain wouldn't get out of the way because they felt they were more important than where the flashing lights were going. ironic thing is, many people who ask that question are those people who don't care until they need us...

i actually considered the marine corps, and talked to them a bit last year. but, in the end, i decided it wasn't for me:ermm:

Ok, just wondering all, how available are Z's to everyone to purchase? i know here in NY there's usually not too much of a problem finding a Z in good shape for a reasonable price. i picked up my 78 280 for 1200 bucks and only spent a total (including the car) of 3,000 bucks to get her to a point where i was happy.. that included rebuilding the motor, tranny, stripping paint, body work, paint, suspension.... that 3,000 bucks was before i decided to go over to dell's

hmmm... at 6' 2", being a wrestler, should give me an advantage also being a student gives PLENTY of opportunity to find stump humpers to beat on ! with my grandfather being a vet from korea, and my brother-in-law a marine being reactivated (he only got on in sept. to be reactivated a couple weeks ago), i'm for the war. patriotic feelings tend to whic through the family in situations such as this!
