Apache Junction? 2nd red flag. The guy said he was going to drive the car 125 miles to Phoenix! But A.J. Is only 20 miles away at the most. Not liken' it one bit... Keep looking in the West for generally less rust. Can you join a local Zcar club? Get contacts thru that may work for you too. Wait for a 240 is my advice.

Back again looking for advice on another 280z
My view is that this car must be in Tucson Arizona- a very arid, dry area. It would be surprising to have frame rail rust on a car from the Southwest though not impossible. More likely it came from somewhere else and wound up in Arizona. Make no mistake, there is no such thing as perfect condition even allowing for the few items that were called out, especially in an unrestored 41-year-old car. If it's been in Arizona for at least 10 years all of the rubber and plastic has started to disintegrate , And it doesn't matter if it's been in a garage or not (ask me how I know!). Perhaps this would be a good choice for you to drive the car, do some easy straightforward work get it painted and flip it just to get your feet wet. Offer a low number (remember you have to transport it) and see what happens. I'm in the Phoenix area but wouldn't be able to help you much (i've never done a restoration myself), but I know what rust looks like and I know how hoses can crumble when you touch them! Looking at this 280z for first project car, need advice
Excellent choice. I've had my 240 for 19 years and I am ashamed to say I have used it more as a table than a driver. It's been thru three cycles of up / down (the downtime coming as a result of sitting idle) while I raised my family and only now am I able to focus on a regular basis and really deepen my enjoyment. I've put more miles on in the last three months than I have in those 19 years. As Charliekwin said it is SO easy to put it off and get to it next year. And I tend to be pretty disciplined about projects. Don't be me! Sent from my iPhone using Classic Zcar Club mobile

Excellent advice - but not to be read or contemplated with the kids jumping on the sofa. Find time and a quiet place with a beverage to think clearly!

Looking at this 280z for first project car, need advice
My list: 240, 280, 260 in that order. Why? 240 - simple, reliable 280 - not as simple, reliable 260 - not as simple, undesirable The further West you search - the less rust you'll find. Good luck! Sent from my iPhone using Classic Zcar Club mobile

Z's dominate this list...
And accuracy too, grannyknot. The last two paragraphs completely get the rankings wrong, plus the Toyota Supra is listed twice! Japan designed some truly great cars, its nice to know I own one of their most collectible cars. Is your brake fluid this dirty?
The fuel story is incredible - I didn't know varnish was that flammable! Although it may be a testament to the reliability (?) of the Z and SU's. My clutch reservoir had a thick black film over the bottom half.

Is your brake fluid this dirty?
I meant this more as a contest than as a problem to be solved! The car has been idle for most of the last eighteen years. I've brought it back to daily driver status recently and changed all the fluids. The clutch reservoir was even worse than this! Wheee! The blue fluid is NLA thanks to our gov't. - Re: Master Cyl - to bleed or not to bleed after replacing Master-vac
Classic symptom is for idle to rise when depressing the brake pedal, as the vacuum seal has been broken allowing fresh air into the intake. Replace the check valve also, $40. I bought my booster from MSA $150 plus a hefty core charge of $300. It looks exactly like my original, down to the Bendix sticker. Be sure to specify your exact mfg date to get the correct diameter pushrod for your clevis fork. Then get ready to snake your arms up into the hardest to reach places! - Re: Master Cyl - to bleed or not to bleed after replacing Master-vac
