On the hunt for a Datsun Competition headrest
Hello Alan, Thank you for the tip on Kameari. I have an email out to them on the headrest. Thanks for the ID on my headrests. If you know anyone that needs a set they are sitting dormant. Sincerely, Ben

On the hunt for a Datsun Competition headrest
Hello Everyone, I have had this seat for over a decade and I have finally decided to install it in my car. The seat has been transported and stored in five different places I have lived in over the last 10+ years. It is a beautiful seat and it isn't doing any good sitting in my storage closet. When I bought the seat it was without a headrest and this is the piece I seek. I did purchase a set of headrests years ago thinking they were the proper headrests, but they are not. If anyone can help me get one original Datsun Competition headrest or an accurate replica I would greatly appreciate it. If you have a use for the headrests I have, they are yours. The attached pictures are of my seat and the pair of headrests I bought years ago. Can anyone identify what seat these headrests would go to? There is a Nissan hamburger on the back lower right corner of both headrests. Sincerely, Ben

You have such a beautiful Z. I love the works colors. Once out of school I am planning on building my 260z with works-rally inspired touches. Again, beautiful car. -Ben

That steering wheel is a special steering wheel for the race cars of the period. I believe that it is called a "mach" steering wheel. -Ben

Back to the track
Pablo, I know that the Z31 turbo had a R200 LSD. Maybe you could find one at a junkyard. Most of the yards around here have had those special pieces removed. Good luck with the racing. These cars are quite the spectacle in action. take care, Ben

Laurel for sale in Idaho
In the mid 70's I believe the S31 came in ZL and ZT. ZT was more luxurious as the T stood for "Top". These were the Z's with the power windows and such. I am not positive on this as I do not have written proof, but a good friend of mine from Japan told me this and he is a notable source. -Ben

Laurel for sale in Idaho
It looks like a one piece nose to me so I don't think it is a Nissan piece. They also state that it is a 70' which does not match the car. With the interior of a 76+ car and the fuel injection, I am betting it is a S31-ZT because it has the power windows. It would be a fun project if someone had the time and inspiration to take all of the rust out of the car. -Ben

Trying to sell: 1973 240z (Fairlady Z)
The Cosmo 110S is a really cool car Stephen. I believe that there are at least three in the states. I know of one by me in the bay area owned by nta dentist, and I have heard that Jay Leno is in the process of restoring one. The RHD drive factor. For me, the Fairlady Z is the most pure form of the Z. This is a Japanese car and there is this aura around the home market cars for me. The fact that they had different trim models in Japan makes the home market cars more sweeter as well. It would be neat to know all of the options that this car has as it is most likely a ZL. However, 12k is an okay price if it is rust free and just dirty. But if there are larger problems, it is too much. -Ben

Trying to sell: 1973 240z (Fairlady Z)
Also, looking at the carbs, they are the smaller type. Indicating the 2 liter engine. It is still a great car with the 5 speed and the closer gear ratios. All the Best, Ben

Trying to sell: 1973 240z (Fairlady Z)
Carl, I have seen many photos of 73-74 Fairlady Z's with the flattop carbs. I am pretty sure they had smog laws in Japan at the time as well as the 2 liter rule for a while. I am alsmost certain that this is a S30-ZL and not a HS30 because the emblems are different and from the pictures, this Z looks pretty stock. On a Fairlady 240Z the emblems are "Fairlady 240Z". This is two emblems, not one like the "Fairlady Z" emblem. I hope this car goes to a good home. It looks like it would do very well with some cleaning and changing of a few parts. Good luck with the sale, Ben

Watanabe Type B set on ebay
Here is another nice set of Watanabe's, but I prefer only the 14 by 7j wheels of this set. They are 14 by 7j type B (+8mm). They are a perfect fit for the front or rear wheels. The 14 by 6j wheels are not as desirable for Z's in my opinion because of the lip. They have a very positive offset and they are not as classic as the solid rim with out the spokes continuing onto it. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/JDM-AE86-Watanabe-114-3X4-2-14X6-2-14X7-Trueno_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ43954QQihZ019QQitemZ8070366919QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW -Ben picture of Z with 14 by 7j type B wheels on front: http://www.classiczcars.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=19092&cat=500&ppuser=3738 http://www.classiczcars.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=19092&cat=500&ppuser=3738

Watanabe Type B set on ebay
Here is a set of 14 by 6.5 Type B Watanabe's on ebay. These are a great fit on non flared z cars. I emailed the seller and he told me that they are type B. I thought they were, but I had to make sure. That means that these have a +14.5mm offset. If anyone is looking for a set of Watanabe's for their non-flared Z, these are a nice size and offset. I believe that Guus Van Der Bohl has these same size and offset Watanabe's on his rally Z, but you would have to make sure with him. Hopefully someone will pick these up. Any price under 1k is good for these wheels as long as they are in great shape, and I bet they can be had for much less. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4646154485&sspagename=ADME%3AL%3ARTQ%3AUS%3A1 -Ben

C110: RB20 or L28?
I have not heard of a 1200hp L-series either, but that would have to be a twin turbo. What about a N/A RB vs. a N/A L-series? However, I have heard of a S30 in Japan that runs an L-series with 50mm Mikuni's that can do the 1/4mi in 11.2 seconds. That is I believe the fastest Z in Japan. I know the S20 was a racing engine and it made the Skyline/Z a winner in Japan, but I don't feel that the L-series was as down played as you mentioned. True the S20 has the higher technology, but it does not have the displacement that the L-series does. Without that displacement you can not get the same hp numbers out of the S20 that you can a L-series. If there was a 2.8L or 3.0L S20, then it would be much different of a story. When the L-series is mated with the LY head, fuel rail, and all the other bits that go along with this amazing engine, it has great potential and it was proven as a race engine both on the track and in rally. I really don't know enough about many of the engine specs, capabilities, and history. I am not a good one to talk or debate about this with. I am always willing to learn more and if you or anyone has more insight on this, please explain. -Ben

C110: RB20 or L28?
Hmm... I don't know what to say or feel about what I have wrote on this topic. I feel that I was very harsh and narrow in my original post. I try to be as kind about my statements as possible. This is what I would have wished I said: The engine that one chooses for their classic Z or Skyline is up to them and it is a personal preference on what they want/need the engine for. Like many of you have said, the RB is easier to source parts for in Australia. There are also many other positives/negatives to this swap as there is for any engine rebuild or swap. I feel that I should leave my strong opinions to myself and express my passion through my car and not through brash statements that may offend others. I respect all Zcars and skylines, wether they have an RB/SR/v8/L-series etc... I am just excited to see these cars in person no matter what style or condition they are in. We are a club here and I was not being a club member in what I said earlier. -Ben
