  1. Zthing, I'd make sure that hose from the top of the valve cover goes into one of the air filters on the carbs, because the gases will get recirculated and burned (good for the earth)...and... anytime you have exhaust leaking on a Z, you run the risk of having it go into the cabin while you're driving. Zs aerodynamics are inherintly (sp) flawed, and anytime there is an exhaust leak and even the smallest cabin leak, you will smell the fumes in the cabin....the car kinda has a really bad air pocket right behind the taillights that will suck anything back into the cabin if there's a leak. With the engine number what it is, it sounds like you have a series I engine, with the E31 head...very good news! If its going to be a wrong number from original thats good. Sounds like the PO couldn't afford to get the SUs rebuilt ($600 now) and settles for $400 Webers, which aren't nearly as good. You HAVE to get a set of SUs, get some broken ones or whatever, and spend the 600 to www.Ztherapy.com in Salem, Oregon, and they make the best rebuilds in the world essentially. SUs are superior...they are simpler, the gas/air mixture has a straight path to the head, the SUs only allow a mixture that the motor wants, not what the accelerator pedal says...they are great in stock form with the stock air filter housing (best air horns imo)...only thing that really helps is the Ztherapy rebuild because they replace the needles with SM needles and use roller bearings (they make them) in the butterfly throttle linkage....check em out...Ztherapy rocks, and I love it cause its only 35 miles away from where I live! Get SUs--you won't be disappointed. I had downdraft webers on my 74 260z however, and they worked great, but that's because the SUs on a 74 were modified for emmissions and only experts could tune them and they still sucked. Get SUS for a 70-72 and they are easy to work on / synchronize. Later!

Thanks for the info Jcraig....that makes a lot of sense. I would think that miniature SUs (6 of them) would be best...since they only allow into the motor what the motor needs....I wonder if motorcycle carbs could be modified, to have a butterfly (that the throttle controls) and the piston moves on its own, like an SU? probably tooo much work, but that would be best, then you could go with the 44mm Mukinis no problem. Thoughts welcome!!!!
  3. Hey guys, help me out, I lost the link...trying to show a porsche autocrosser a better setup for a hybrid than the chevy v8....(and I'm not into hybridz, just wanted to show him this rig) There's a website, where there are pictures of a blue 240Z propped up in a cafeteria or somewhere, and it has an Infiniti Q45 motor in it...and it's totally tricked out, mirrors on the ground, etc... Just wanted the link, so I can show my Porsche buddy... If someone replies, thanks in advance!
  4. That guy in Japan went nuts on his Z, so many original things done...I was wondering though....did Japanese Zs have the 'datsun' sticker on the hatch outside and on the fender? If not, why is he doing this to such an original looking Z other than that?
  5. Checked out miata seats, those look good as well as the Integra seats....does anyone know of any white/white leather stock oem seats from some modern sporty car that would match my interior? I would think not, but the black miata seats would do...with sheepskin covers...maybe I can contact that Oregon State player about getting some sheepskins....
  6. I'll check out Miata seats....are the speakers replaceable in the headrest?

Kmack, that bike is like cheating, being a 2 stroke. What about that RZ350, the red/white 2 stroke in the mid 80s...that would be cool too. I would think that the only advantage to using 6 carbs would be that each cylinder can be tuned individually. A 3 weber side draft configuration already is like 6 carbs, with 2 carbs fused together and not tuneable indivually...that's right isn't it? I mean the webers have 6 air horns, so....
  8. Zthing, just curious, does your Z have vertical or horizontal defroster lines on the rear window? Didn't that start right around that time? You picked a good year for a Z, the '72 is one of the best years (if low vin isn't a concern)... The rear diff has been moved back a few inches to allow for proper geometry on the half shafts, the tool bins are installed behind the rear seats, and last but not least, the steering wheel has holes in the spokes to break your fingers in! Congrats on getting your own Zed! Get used to being broke if you're serious.... :knockedou

You guys exceed the speed limit in your Datsuns? That's against the law. In a Suzuki I was going 85 in a 65 ...Beandip and Esc...it was the speed trap on I-84 going towards Hood River, between what would be 200th and 240th streets...there is always a cop hiding there....was going out to meet my new girlfriend at the time, heh. Don't exceed the speed limit 3 miles before the wood village exit...you will get nailed just about every time, except rush hour. It was a $225 ticket, reduced to $125 in Gresham by just showing up on my 'court date'...by pleading no contest, there was no court, the 'receptionist' just reduced it....

  12. No racer, no ricer either. I have 2 good old perfect white vinyl covered stock 100% seats, just looking for something to bolt in for everyday driving...I have found sound actual OEM leather acura integra seats that sound a lot better than these (around $150 out of a GSR--so they are very supportive) and the guy will ship from NC for $100 or so (which doesn't sound too bad considering how big the box will probably be). I was really just looking, not in market yet. Thanks for the input guys. Escalon (sp?) PM me about who your mechanic is...Beandip was saying he is good. I'll be in the market soon to rebuild my 2.4 or get a 2.8 going.... Thanks,

  14. I was looking for some acura integra seats (just looking mind you) and I saw these seats, 2 of them for $150, and that seems really hard to believe they are any good (even if they don't have mounting brackets)... Just wondering if anyone knew anything about them....they say they are JDM racing seats, but I doubt it. What do ya all think? Later,

Here's the deal, and why I would not remove the bumpers (most important reason) --I have had a couple of old people, while waiting in the postal drop line accidentally just 'touch' my rear bumper, not enough to really do any damage--but if I didn't have a bumper, I'd have some serious problems...it has happened enough where I do need to replace the rear bumper mounting brackets, but that's it...the bumper still looks at least 90% good (which is good enough for a daily driver) I have also dinged a couple of people backing out of parking lots, and also bumped a couple of people with my front bumper (again, in that dang postal drop drive through line ) ... I am telling you from a lot of experience, Keep those bumpers on if you are driving your rig a lot...if for a show or only drive on a Summer Sunday, then maybe... Also, Carl is right, a big accident (15+ mph) is going to cause damage whether or not you have bumpers or not! Have a Zed-ful day!!!!

Thanks for the info on adjusting the nut on the Master cyl...I am going to try this...sure this is my wheel shimmy problem...seems to happen only once brakes are heated up. Later,

I find it amusing that after a lot of thread, the fact that the delete option is buggy is brought up...bring that up first thing, and I would have understood. I have felt that if you post it to the website, its public domain, (but with the © classic zcars at the bottom)...if anyone's concerned about their photos being used elsewhere, the web is the worst absolute place to put an image. That is just common sense, hard to imagine it any other way. What are people thinking? And if somebody posts 3000 perfect Z pictures, they should be able to delete them at anytime...by posting it's inferred that others can save and use these pictures ANY way they want. The fact that it is copyright your website does protect in some fashion against someone making a buck off of the picture, but for personal use I should be able to download any picture I want if its on here. The pictures I've posted can be on a billboard in Manhattan for all I care...once they're on the web. Have a Zed-ful day!

Mike, Back when you redid the galleries, who was it that complained they didn't want their images saved? I think that not being able to right click on an image is ridiculous...if you don't want someone to save your image, don't put it on the web.... I mean, its slightly annoying, but all you have to do is screen print and crop...I mean not being able to right click and save is just plain annoying...nothing stops anyone from getting an image. Can't the policy on this be reviewed, possibly changed? Keep up the good work!!! Love the site man,
  20. Hey guys, I'm in USA, Portland, Oregon. When you blokes say 24K, what type of coin is that? and what is 24K in american dollars. Even though I don't know what that translates as, I can't believe what people are charging in Aussie land for a Zed!!!! In the US, the restored ones from a few years ago are like 15K US dollars max...and those are pretty perfect Zeds... Later!!!!
  21. My bad; thought the self adjuster come on later....good luck with the rebuild...I bet your 5 speed will be SUUUWEEEET when its rebuilt...they shift so nicely compared to the (sic) 4 speed....

Yes, thanks Carl for taking all of our rain, (I can't believe I'm saying that) but its true...anyone for metal dectector fun at Detroit Lake this year? We need some rain up here! Luckily, we had a little this week.
  23. The slave cylinder is different as well, but if you're using the same fork, maybe you don't need a different one. I had to replace the clutch assy and slave cylinder when I put in a 78 5 speed into my 72...but I had the complete fork/throw out bearing from the 78, because I really wanted to use the auto adjusting slave cylinder from the later S30s.

Sorry man, it doesn't work. The 73 240 has shock absorbers connected to the bumper (like a 280 but much lighter versions) and the bumper is designed to be able to technically be pushed towards the body something like 2 inches without damage (I said technically)....the bumper is different than a 70-72...it could fit technically, but hey, you have a 71 for a reason....IMO go with a 70-72 front bumper. Sorry for the bad news.
