  1. I think it was 2k
  2. Lumens, I think the whole shifter thing is very confusing. Not cause of you, there are just a lot of variables.
  3. Thankyou everyone for your time and input. I said I wanted to see this project through at the beginning of the thread. but, I have to say I was second guessing myself this week. So after grinding down the shift rod front and back it shifts like butter. I like the tall gears, I'm not use to them. My friend/mechanic also with your feedback was able to diagnose and figure out my stalling problem. My car was stalling when coming down. He adjusted the throttle stop so it wouln't close completely or over reach the idle point. He also adjusted the dash pot a little bit to slow down the throttle plate. Time to clean and enjoy!
  4. Its just to the point where I am ready to move on to the next project! But, boy does that exhaust sound good!! Lumens, I posted a pic of shifters next to each other, is the ZX shifter i'm using a long nose??
  5. I had nicks on front and back, went ahead an ground it down a little. Zx shifter on top, I feel that's the better of the two for the 75, So it seems.
  6. I'm supposed to be using the zx shifter, right? It has the bend in it.
  7. You guys have loaded me with a lot of good info to try tonight, I will let you know. The tranny shop does nice work, a lot of old cars and street rods in and out. Thanks for offering to mail shifter, I should be able to work with pics.
  8. I'm totally going to do what you said tomorrow night. I'm sure your right, I just want to understand it fully. So, if I'm using the shifter out of the 79 and I'm using the tranny out of the 79, why all of a sudden would the shifter be hitting the shift pot? That's what I'm trying to get my head around because it's not like it's hitting the trans tunnel.
  9. Thanks zed. I just got the call from probably one of the best transmission shops in cincinnati where I dropped it off to Friday. Nothing is wrong with the trans, nothing! They tore it all the way down, cleaned and inspected everything and put it back together. Then they tore it down again and reassembled once more, they say it's perfect. So , for $200 I know what I have. I was almost hoping it was bad just to solve the problem. I guess my next step is to grind down the shifter front and rear. I just don't get How grinding the shifter down will keep it from popping out of 4th gear? I'm assuming the shifter is preventing it from going all the way into 5th which is why it grinds at 5th. I used all clutch products associated with my 75 4sp, is that correct also? Thanks in advance!!
  10. Be careful not to break a head off. I was torqueing the fly wheel bolts a couple weeks ago and snapped one off. I had easy access to drill it out, I think you won't be happy if you snap one on the oil pan.
  11. I just installed the competition oil pan gasket and valve cover gasket from MSA, I think they are a little thicker. They were easy to install, no leaks, glad I went with them.
  12. Clutch is new and feels good. So, say I start out from a stop light and run through the gears at normal shifting times and drive a mile or two at say 40mph. If I am cruising at 40mph or whatever speed and see I need to slow down or prepare to stop, a lot of times when I push the clutch in to maybe drop it in to 3rd or 2nd the car just dies. I go ahead and put in gear anyway and release the clutch and it kick starts and will run fine til next time I coast or down shift then it does it again. Could it be the coil? I dropped trans off at transmission shop this morning. Nothing like undoing everything you just did.
  13. Well, nothing good! Got my Doorman bushings today so went down to put in the final peice of the puzzle but the corners must be bent on a couple of peices. Although the car starts and idles nice on the lift, It continues to stall when you push the clutch in... usually on a down shift. I was told by a specialist that worked on it before I took it apart that it was the idle air valve. I swapped that out with the one off my parts car and still no luck, acting the same way. next, The transmission is popping out of 4th gear and grinding when I try to put it in to 5th.#%#?*&%$##!!! I guess it was a gamble buying a parts car that didn't run. I am guessing the tranny needs rebuilt?? Any opinions on why its cutting off when at speed, usually when the clutch is depressed? I guess your work is not done here just yet!
  14. I am not sure what I have going on as of yet. I am going to get the brass sleeve first and hope for the best. I hope I don't have to go that route, but will if need be. thanks for pics.
  15. I'm on it, thankyou.
  16. So those sleves will fit in the bottom of the shifter where the shifter attatches to the top of the transmission with the "c" clamp? So, this is a somewhat common problem? Slop in the shifter.
  17. The biggest thing I don't like about that car is the sellers ad. Definitely want to lay eyes on that one before buying!
  18. Not sure where you're located? I think for a little more money you can have something you can enjoy right away and I am sure there are plenty of projects this car needs. Best of both worlds, good looking project "Z" car. Just saying! https://cincinnati.craigslist.org/cto/6004088587.html
  19. The shifter that goes into 2nd, 4th and reverse perfect is the 4 spd shifter. The 5 spd shifter has the missing sleeve which makes it super loose and sloppy.
  20. It shifts into gear nicely with the wrong shifter in. I'm calling the dealer first thing tomorrow. Thanks.
  21. Soooooo close, but no cigar! I left the spindle pin wedges out, it was on my button up list. I could not find the flat spot on the spindle pins?? I had know idea there was a front and a back to the pins. Just an fyi for the next person. Of course I had a 50/50 chance of putting them in right and neither one was right. So, I had to remove and reinstall those. Next, I pulled out my power bleeder and went to town on bleeding the brake system and clutch, all is good there. It's now time to turn the key...... fired right up and sounded great! I let it sit and idle while putting wheels on, I was totally stoked..... until I realized I could not get it into gear, any gear?? My new 5 speed transmission out of my parts car went into all 5 gears with ease when in the 79 and when it was laying on the floor. Since the clutch felt good I went ahead and pulled the shifter to compare it to the shifter that was originally in my car. I noticed the hole that holds the shift pin was missing its brass sleeve and the hole was quite a bit bigger and made it very loose and sloppy. The only thing I can figure is that it's a leverage issue and the rubber shift boots are playing a role in this??? I temporarily put the original 75 shifter in and it goes easily into 2nd, 4th and reverse but obviously not 1st, 3rd and 5th because it bottoms out into the trans tunnel. Does this sound like I'm headed in the right direction??
  22. I have not, I will once we get the brake system filled and get the tires on. What is "normalize"?
  23. Thanks again, fingers crossed it fires up tomorrow.
