wire harness question for a '78
There are electrical differences between the 77 and the 78 such as external vs internal regulator, fuel pump contacts in the AFM, etc. so the harnesses are different.

Or even a modern OEM system. It's amazing how many things can be programmed on my GTO. Keep in mind that improper adjustment can decrease performance and even cause damage. That's all I'll say lest we go furhter off topic.....

You'd have to define 'chipped' but they definately can't be programmed. There is no software/instructions/memory/storage etc. in them and therefore, nothing to communicate with and change/adjust etc. Chipping is what some some people are referfing to when they place resistors in the system at different points to 'fool' or 'trick' it, thereby changing a particular signal so as to effect performance.

There is nothing programmable. I wasn't equating "nothing but circuit boards" to analog but it's an analog circuit board. There are no microprocessors or anything else that can be communicated with. I should have been clearer.

It's analog, nothing but circuit boards. Think about the era it was designed/built in.....nothing 'micro' about the processors in use then and certainly there would have been no way to utilize any of that technology in an automobile.

sr20det swap in 240z
Being fuel injected, that engine will need some kind of engine management, either stock or aftermarket and the components that go with it like O² sensors etc., you'll need a fuel injection type fuel pump, higher pressure fuel lines, the various dampers, filters, etc. Look on Hybrid Z. You'll likely find more info on this swap there than here.

Do headlight covers increase mpg?
To adjust the carbs would actually require a lot of time. He'd have to remove the EFI and install them first......

sr20det swap in 240z
Have you given any thought to the electronics/engine managenent that goes with that engine? Or the necessary modification needed to the car's fuel system.

I feel bad
I sold my 71 510 when I bought my 78 280Z. Very much like your description; 5 speed, L20B, electronic ignition, dual Mikunis, etc., etc though mine was blue. I really only sold it because, at the time, where I lived, I didn't have room for the Z, my wife's car, two Datsun Pickups (one for show (1964) and one for actual truck use (1970) and the 510. You'll miss that car if you sell it, as I still miss mine and, in a way, most of the cars that I've ever owned. If you don't have the time, space, money, even interest, in some cases, that they deserve, they're probably better off elsewhere. After all, to borrow a term from Arne, we don't really own them, were just their custodians.

Looking for Parts
Though not by much, the 77-78 pieces were a little better made, IMO. Mine were in pretty good shape when I got my car but I actually found a pair for the front that were virtually perfect in junkyard when I was refreshing the car.
- Need 1978 280Z header suggestions
