Anything from 8/76-7/77 would be considered 77. So that is an early 77. Somewhere in the first coulple of months of 77 model production, the spare tire well was raised and the larger gas tank was added necessatating the need for the raised deck to clear the spare which now sat higher. Again, nothing to do with water damage or multiple production plants.

No, there really are sloped/curved decks. I've seen them and they aren't from 'water damage'. It's a different setup from the flat/raised 77-78 so I always thought that it was a 75-76 thing and may have carried over into early 77 as Nissan/Datsun was known to do that during model year transitions. But remember, the raised deck in the 77-78 was because of the larger gas tank - collapsible spare setup so it wouldn't have been because of 'two different factories' (let's be careful with the anecdotal stuff - there's already enough of that). I think siteunseen may be mistaken about his 76 having had a flat deck. What we need is a shot of mgoods 76 in that area. Grant, is your 77 'early'? Like I said, there may have been some carry over into early 77 but this Wiki quote basically sums it up:

I never buy a car with that in mind. I buy them for the enjoyment of of owning them. When I no longer have that feeling, I sell them. If I manage to make a profit when I do sell one, that's a bonus.

I owned 5; a 68 4dr. (primered-bad condition but it ran), a 70 2dr. (white-stock except for wheels), a 71 2dr. (blue-period custom-spoiler, air dam, wheels, bra-my favorite-it's somewhere in my gallery here), 72 2dr. (primered-beater daily driver) and a 73 4dr. (lt. green-very clean sold it to my girlfriend back in the day). Great cars, but, like the 810 2dr I had, as rare as those are, and as Healy Z said, very little collector value.

If you can get one as clean as the one in picture for $3k, I'd consider it. That's how much I sold mine for ..... in 1998!
  6. For that I just use a plastic bag and a twist tie over that end of the trans........

On a similar note, has anyone read the book "William R. Gorham: An American Engineer in Japan"?
  8. Now that you mention it....... The stripe, which is what made me think of Bob's car, must have been added later
  9. I called the T56 a Borg Warner in my post above (out of habit) but its actually a Tremec. That Silvia trans looks like to be a Borg Warner, however.
  10. I doubt that a T-56 would fit an L-motor without major mods. I've had the trans out of my GTO and, as I recall, it wouln't even be close. Starter location, size of belhousing, etc.
  11. 240dkw, I think you mean 'mally002' but I thnk his car is white w/blue interior; you tend to remember that combo, or, at least, I do. That looks more like bobc's car. He's also a member plus he's in California, like the OP, and I think mally is in Texas. But it might not be Bob's either because I think he has bumper bars on his.
  12. I think £6595.00 would actually be more in the range of somewhere between $10,000-$10,500 but it's still more than I'd want to ante up for a tranny. I could buy 3, maybe 4 Borg Warner T-56 6 speeds for that amount.
  13. The 280ZX Turbos had that trans.

To drain/replace the fluid, I use my power bleeder. I go from wheel to wheel, in the same order you would for bleeding, until there's no more dirty fluid. Of course, topping up the master as I go along.
  15. That's the same emblem that was on the hood of my 320 pickup. I've also seen it on some of the early 60s sedans.
  16. That's something that's been done to many S30's (and other vehicles) since thermostatically controlled electric fans became available many years ago......
  17. His car is a 78, or at least a later model because he said '3 speeds'. The wiper speed was, at least, adequate by then.....

I don't think I would have wanted to go 155 mph in my 78, the front end started feeling kind of 'light' above 95. I know I couldn't rev the engine to 9400 rpm.....my GTO won't even do that:)

Most better equipped A/C shops should be able to help you find the proper size ducting.

Looks like a few of the numbers on your graphic are off a bit(!)..........
  21. 78s came with that crappy collapsible spare with the 'can of air'. Very seldom are they actually servicable after all these years. The one time I used mine didn't exactly enstill confidence..........
  22. sblake01 replied to gtom's post in a topic in Open Discussions
They pretty much did do that....we just didn't get them here. And there's nothing wrong with digital interfaces, EPROM programmers, computers, etc. Got to roll with the changes. Then was then and now is now. Besides, in the 60s, I wouldn't have been quite old enough to be part of Nissan's design team and many (if not most) of you weren't born yet......

That sensor is the pressure swicth. Should be a two wire plug with a yellow wire and a yellow/red stripe wire. One wire goes to the AC relay and the other to the thermostatic switch that senses evaporator temperature. The pressure problem you are describng can be caused by excessive moisture in the system. Sometimes evacuating the sytem and pulling a good vacuum on it will cure it but most of the time, you have to replace the drier.
