  1. Ran one on my 320 pickup for years. Never had a problem but a J16 engine doesn't rev like an L series. Fatigue crack? It was in as good a condition when I sold the truck 12 years after installing it......
  2. If it is a factory system, it would have likely used an early version of one of the swash plate type Hitachi compressors which would have been rotary rather than upright. Like I said, if the evaporator is mounted behind the center stack rather than in the passenger footwell, you have factory air, possibly the rarest of the 'series 1 bits' you speak of. If that is the case, it would work better than you think as far as cooling the car goes. Finding all of the parts for it could be a challenge.
  3. Found it!: If this is the system you have, it might be worth restoring.
  4. If the evaporator is in the center of the dash rather than in the passenger footwell, its a factory installed system. I seem to recall Alan T. posting a scan of the factory system that we never got here in the U.S.
  5. I would at least get it checked. You won't necessarily feel an out of alignment rear end.
  6. The clock in my 78 worked when I bought it in 1997 and still worked when I sold it in 2009. In fact, when I saw the car in February this year it was still working. I never had it apart.
  7. Try this link. The original one is so long that it would be almost impossible to properly parse it for use as a website link.

Not scientific at all but having had S30s with both the BRE spook and air dams similar to the BRE type one (like the one in my sig pic) the spook never felt quite as stable at high speeds as the air dam.
  9. That should have read: The 'tightness' of the engine is probably more important on the EFI............
  10. Alot of what I've seen makes it unclear as to whether it was for emissions purposes or for the reason you say. Can anyone answer why it was only used on the 280ZX and not the 79-83 810/910 Maxima or any of the 4 cyl EFI Datsun/Nissans of the era? You can 'repeat' as many times as you want. I know what vapor lock is. Fuel could well be a factor. Never ran any of them on ethanol. All we can do is conjecture and agree to disagree.....
  11. The confusion here is in the semantics between true 'vapor lock' and 'vapor lock type symptoms'. In the combined 18 years of the 'joy of ownership' of mid to late 70s Datsun EFI vehicles the only time I ever experienced that was when the check valve went bad on my 810. Replaced it - no further problems. It gets well over 100 degrees everywhere I've lived here in those 18 years. If it happens on a carbed car it's vapor lock if it happens on an EFI car is a mechanical problem that manifests itself with vapor lock type symptoms. When everything is right, it will never happen. That can't be said of carbed cars. Even with wrapped fuel lines the fuel pressure is only, what, 3-5 psi.?
  12. When I bought my 78 it only had 42000 miles on it. I had been parked for 3 years because of a bad rocker, at least that's what the PO thought. It turned out that the nut had backed off and the rocker wasn't on the valve. Even so, I pulled the head and freshened it up, valve job, seals, etc. When I sold it a couple of years ago it only had 98000 miles. Because of that, my car likely had that 'additional inch of vacuum' that Sarah spoke of which is, IMO, the main reason that I didn't have many of the EFI problems that I see people trying to chase down here and the reason why it never faied a smog test. And it still hasn't, not even with the new owner. The 'tightness' of the engine is probably more on the EFI cars since there are no real adjustments you can do to compensate for low vacuum, compression, blow by, etc.
  13. I would guess that the ones getting that kind of feedback would be the ones that either own badly done or overdone ZG clones or anyone that has a modified LHD S30 and is referring to it as a 'ZG'. People that actually own a 'stock' ZG shouldn't have that problem.
  14. I've had the car for almost three years and I've done lots (and I don mean lots!) of research on it. I'm well aware of the differences between the CV8 and the U.S. Pontiac GTO. Mine is not stock. Some of the aftermarket goodies I have in mine actually did come from over there (JHP Vehicle Enhancements) I could go into detail but I think that would be more appropriate on the GTO/Holden sites that I spend time on. My only point for commenting on the LS engine in the first place was to realate how they achieve a smooth idle here in the U.S. Let's get back to Datsuns.....

Back in the day we'd just drink the vodka and eat the skittles......
  16. Not everyone...........
  17. Precisely why I don't have the stock cam......(If others still wish to argue about sequential injection, etc., then I can talk about LSX engines)

Member 'madkaw' said he had one a while back in this thread that resufraced the other day. See post #7, maybe he still has it:http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?27734-240Z-aftermarket-A-C-wiring-question.-HELP!&p=227610&viewfull=1#post227610
  19. It may be a 'dead horse' on Hybrid but except for a couple of sideracks (what else is new?) we're just trying to continue with Sarah's thread.
  20. The cams in the GM LSX V8s have very little overlap and that's why they idle as smoothly as they do (stock). I doubt if you could find a cam like that for an L series. Maybe you could have one custom ground. If you could I'm curious how that wold work with the aforementioned 37+ year old engine design.
  21. Have you checked you ignition relay or the electrical part of your ignition switch?

Glad you're happy with him. I wouldn't buy a pack of gum from Mr. Al Allen. Past experience. Search and you'll find many others that feel that way.
  23. http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?43020-1978-280z-Will-Not-Turn-Over&p=370439&highlight=#post370439 You've already posted this. Multiple threads with the same topic won't generate any more responses than one thread will. Be patient. Sounds like you've got some bad connections. Not much to say other than you're going to have to trace them down. Hard to diagnose that kind of thing in print. Didn't we go through this a couple of years or so ago?
  24. I think he means between the 9 posts within the first couple of days of joining in April and this particular post.
