Blake, which is actually his name, and no, it's not me! He's a friend from Los Angeles whom I run into at the local shows, swap meets, and junkyards quite often. He generally sells good stuff at a reasonable price. The bidders made those go crazy.
  2. The CSP311 Silvia is mentioned a couple of times in the book, however. As a predacessor to the later Silvia (200SX), that one of Motor Trend magazine's writers traced the original Z to the Silvia (and I might add that Mr. Hollander states that, according to Motor Trend, that Goertz "didn't have a thing to do with it" when it comes to the Z's design), and he also states the over the five year period (64-68) that 554 CSP311's were produced. I have had this book for a number of years and have always enjoyed it. Much more so than 'Petersen's Complete Book of Datsun'. I panicked when I thought that I had lost it while moving to our new house, but it turned up. I had stuck it in the glove box of my truck!

    It will work.
  4. I would hope, since we are basically talking about cars that are what? 25+ years old, that the stock muffler is long gone.

The one thing that worries me about using Acetone as a fuel additive is the warning on the can. "IMPORTANT: Acetone may soften or damage plastics, synthetics, and many other finishes." Since we're dealing with fuel lines and fuel system components that may fall into those catagories shouldn't that be of concern?

When you test the fuel pressure, turn the car off and see if the pressure goes away, it shouldn't. If it does than my theory of the check valve being bad is correct.

  8. Well hell, I've been given a hard time for posting about my 810 or my L320 and they're both Datsuns. I don't mind hearing about your Buick. There are many people that do more than Z's myself included. I'm a Datsun guy more than I'm a Z guy but beyond that I am just a car guy. I've owned 46 cars in my lifetime. I just happen to own Datsuns right now.

Didn't you ask about this in another thread? I recall mentioning a malfunctioning fuel pump check valve and even inserting an attachment. From what you describe coupled with my experience with these cars, that would be a place where I'd look. The thermotime switch/cold start valve problem would make your car run quite rich but it would start. You'd notice the black smoke and you've made no mention of that happening. A plug in the fuel line? No that would show up in your fuel pressure test. Clogged fuel filter? No, same thing, it would show up in your fuel pressure test. Check the check valve. If it's bad, it won't allow the fuel system to hold pressure and evertime you try to start it, it has to fill the fuel lines, fuel rail, etc. causing it to be hard to start.

I hope that wasn't directed at me

Actually they're from a early 74 260z. To reinstall the large bumpers, you'd need the trim panels that fill the space between the bumper and the body, and the energy absorbing shock mounts also. Since the p.o. has already done the necessary modifications to install them, it would be less hassle to just have your present bumpers straightened and rechromed. Most people don't care for the larger bumpers anyway from what I read here. I happen to like them on the cars they belong on.
  12. Try this, it seems to work now if you have an Adobe Acrobat Reader: http://www.atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/efisystem/280zfuelinjectionbook.pdf
  13. We know where it is. The guy who asked the question (in three different threds I might add) never responded to the answer.

Znut, your problem sounds like it could be a bad check vavle on the fuel pump. A bad one will not allow the system to hold fuel pressure. I don't know if you can just get a check valve but they do come with the fuel pump.
  15. I wouldn't worry about it. He hasn't posted in nearly a month, his last entry in this thread was 8/19/05, I answered his questions even though he posted them in three different threads and, by his own admission, he's a confused 17 year old. We have many of them here. Try to ignore them. Both links that I know of to the 'efi bible' seem to be dead. If anyone wants a copy of it, I can email it to you

I'm really not that concerned about it. But thanks for making it 'easier for me to read.'
  17. We must be typing at the same time! I edited my previous post with some info on the oil pump.
  18. It should line up with the dowels on the flywheel. Make sure you use an alignment tool for the clutch disc and that the disc is facing the proper direction. They usually say 'flywheel side' on them. It's not 'fluid' in a manual it's gear lube. 4.25 pints of 90-140 wt (depending on your local climate) with a API GL-4 rating. As for your second question, what is crucial there is how it lines up with the distributor. Look for Bambikiller240's thread on installing a Petronix ignition. It goes into some detail about properly lining up the oil pump.
  19. Leave the 'cap' off. It's also a spacer for the flexplate. You won't need either one on a flywheel. As for the bearing (it's actually a pilot bushing) and it goes all the way in. It basically keeps the input shaft of the manual trans centered.

I don't really know if you can draw any conclusions from those charts. Lots of modified vehicles there. Does that also mean that depending on your reference that a 78 280z is faster than a 70 240z? You could draw that conclusion from that chart. Lies, damn lies and statistics! But that wasn't really my point. From 70-83, they became progressively heavier. Don't really need a chart to conclude that.

Well, lighter is always better and 240-260-280zs are lighter than 280ZXs. By the time the 280z came along in 75, they were already beginning to get heavier. Safety and emissions equipment, air conditioning, etc. With the 280zx add all of that plus power steering and along with the redesign it was just a bigger and heavier car. They were also aiming at a broader market. I'm not sure which year but I believe that on of the 280zxs (79-83) was the best selling of all Zs. My daily driver is a 79 Datsun 810 2dr hardtop. Bigger than a Z, heavier than a Z but it's based on the Z drive train so it still gives you that Z feeling somewhat when you drive it. But again it's not a Z. And even though my Z is a 78 and I love it, I feel that the 'real Zs' are the 70-73.
  23. Mine wasn't a serious shot, I was actually supporting the fact that he could be telling the truth even if the info is difficult or impossible to find. But I ain't taking it back :devious:
  24. As we all well know, there are a lot of people out there with just that in mind.
