After further review: 81-84 Maximas have power rack and pinion 81 ZXTs had power rack and pinion 82-83 ZXs and ZXTs had power rack and pinion Don't know if they will fit a series 1 but it's a good place to start checking.
  6. Just trying to answer the mans question! After all, check out this months' 'featured car'.

Going back to my previous post, I had forgotten one thing. The 810 doesn't have rack and pinion steering. It has power recirculating ball steering. The 81-84 Maximas had rack and pinion. I'll have to research some ZX's next time I go to the junkyard.
  8. The 50mm heigth difference is just a shade under 2 inches. Since you'd have to design the motor mounts for this swap, if they were designed such that the VQ could sit as low as possible, I think the hood would close. The highest point would be the center of the engine and that is where the hood is highest. I would also be curious about the oil pan confriguation.

You should probably search the junkyards and check the steering components on ZX's, 810's, and pre-85 Maximas. If the parts look like they mignt be compatible, that would be the way to go costwise. I once thought about doing that to my 78 280Z. I've never actually seen one done. When I get a chance, I'm going to compare my Z (non ps) to my 810 (ps). I'll let you know what I find out.
  10. The Janspeed company was in England. I have read about the conversion but I can't remember where. To my knowledge that conversion was not available here in the U.S. I'll bet you could find some information if you check with Alan T. (HS30-H).

It seems to be allright now. I changed my time back to Pacific in the user cp and it matches my computer time now. Thanks.

It's still two hours off. I live in the Pacific time zone but I have had to set my user cp time option to Hawaii time to match the time on my computer.
  13. For a knock-around basic use tire, check out the Kumho 732 Touring Plus. I bought some for my Z (2056014) from Tire Rack last summer and the have held up very well. I will soon, however, be putting the Yokohama A-509's (2256014) I bought from MistressMotorsports (Mike) on it.
  14. Hang in there old school Skyliners! I happen to enjoy reading about my 810's cousins across the pond. Glad hear you worked out your overheating problem. I was assuming a good thermostat in the scenario I mentioned in my earlier post.
  15. They'd look right at home on a Z31!
  16. In 50 years I'll either be long gone or in the Guiness Book!:dead:
  17. Some of the shops use an acid wash. I have always been reluctant to try that since the acid will also etch the aluminum if left on too long.
  18. I have had problems with TEM-couplings (fan clutch) in the past. Just because they don't spin freely when warmed up doesn't mean that they are working properly. With the car hot, rev it to about 2k and hold it there. If the fan clutch is good, it should be locked in at that point until the temperature begins to go down. If it slips out, then it's bad. Bypassing the heater should have no effect on cooling. If your car cooled okay with the electric fan, and it doesn't now, I would suspect the fan clutch.
  19. Not to mention Hit & Run.
  20. I use basically the same procedures as v12horse outlined except instead of the finer sanpapers I use 00 and 0000 steel wool. I use a buffing pad on my bench grinder for the main polishing and the drill and dremel for the harder to reach areas.

Replacing my Z would be hard but replacing Daisey would be impossible! It took me two failed marriages and 46 years to find her!

Looks like it might be an outer shift boot but maybe I had better wait until Rob answers! Looks like Rob was a little quicker that me!

I owned a 1970 Datsun SPL311 (1600) Roadster for 20 years. It had the 2000 crank, rods, and pistons, Pertronix ignition, a 2000 5 speed, etc. Wish I'd never sold it. I think it could have co-existed with my other Datsuns! Somehow I submitted this twice and again was unable to delete the entire post.

  25. From what I understand, the VQ is narrower than the VG. (60deg. vs 90 deg.) That should take care of the width problem. Also the VQ has an aluminum block vs the VG's cast iron. That should make the weight an almost non issue considering that both of them are lighter than a Chevy V8. Like 280ZXfever anything is possible. Many things to consider, however. Cost of the engine, how much modification, engine management, transmission, etc. But, when finished, it would be interesting!
