78 280Z emissions nightmare.... (HELP!!!)
I'm not even glad that you solved your problem. I mean it's good for you that you did but your attitude is unwarranted. Could it possibly be that you didn't state the problem clearly enough for people to understand it? We'll never know now since you've edited the post.

congrats ZRUSH!
We all have our preferences. I wasn't saying that anything had to be fixed for me. That's just how I deal with it.

1981 280 Z
If it's an 81, it would be a 280ZX.

what's the differance?
I've seen the shot of the Jetta before. I think it's a Photoshop job because the story on the version I've seen says it took place in Northern California. Same picture.

What's Your Favorite Z or Datsun Patch?
I'd love to have these but unfortunately they are 30 year old originals rather than reproductions and the guy wants $120 for the set.

congrats ZRUSH!
Congrats again, Scott and Vicky but 'olderthanme' needs to learn how to do attachments instead of posting the pictures in the thread and stretching the page and creating unnecessary scrolling in order to read through the thread as that does. It's just me but anyone that does that goes instantly on my ignore list.

Aging Man with an Aging Car -- I need help
I need to catch up on the history of this thread, but how did you come to the conclusion that you need a fuel pressure regulator? Did you test the fuel pressure, as per the FSM? I thought that we conlcluded that you needed a fuel pump check valve.

Elec. dizzy
You don't need a ballast resistor with the electronic dist. Not sure about the use of the module (or lack of) with the MSD.

Newly Painted 280Z
I thought he was referring to wheels and hubcaps that would have been oem or factory option for a 78 as are the two I attached.

hi need help
You're looking for '99990-00113' but they aren't available from the dealer anymore. The ones that MSA sell are similar but not the same. Ebay?

Newly Painted 280Z
I believe he's referring to these. The second picture is the factory alloy option from 74-78. Some people refer to these as the 'Black Pearl Wheels' but they were an option for any 260z or 280z.

hi need help
All 77-78 280Zs came with hood vents and a hood designed for them. They are functional in that they do let air (and anything else) in. The mirrors you can find but I don't think the stripe kit is available any longer.

How do I know which 5-speed I've got?
Cool, there was no intent in my statement, but I do realize that we have to watch how we word things here. All I was saying is that I had mentioned it.

How do I know which 5-speed I've got?
I said that at the end of my initial answer.

'70 Rust-Free Arizona Z Going Cheap!
Well, as of now, he (onuthin) is the top bidder.
-
can you really do that!?
If I understood the original question and I'm not really sure I did, my answer would be if it's electronically fuel injected you will need some type of engine management. Maybe not the Nissan ECU but some type of engine management. FairladyZ747, ask lots of questions and be sure of the answers before you tackle the project you seem to be contemplating.

Most junkyards won't take a car without proper paperwork.

Driving my Z 900miles....
Sounds like your all set. I don't think that a car that you drive on a regular basis has any more chance of developing a problem on a long trip that during your regular driving. We just become concerned about the prospect of it happening so far from familiar ground. I've driven my 64 L320 to Arizona and back with no problems, I've driven the 810 to Solvang and back with no problems (exc. a speeding ticket!), and I've driven the Z to Oakland and back with no problems. If you're up on your maintainence, you'll be fine. Good luck!

How do I know which 5-speed I've got?
The 81-83 ZX and 81-84 Maxima 5spd have a .745-1 fifth gear. I believe the earlier 5spd is .852-1. The earlier trans actually pulls a little better through the first three gears than the later one. But the late 5spd does lower the rpm by about 12.5% over the early one and by about 25.5% over the 4spd. I have the later trans in my 78. One thing I notice is that the later trans has only one mouning ear on the bottom, below the shifter, on the left side where the exhaust bracket mounts. The earlier ones have on on both sides.

VG30DETT swap
My wife has an Infiniti J30 with a VG30DE (no turbos:disappoin ). I measured the engine in her car and compared it to my Z engine bay. Even w/o the turbos that engine would not fit without modification. IIRC, besides the top of the motor being too wide the oil pan sump is in the wrong place and the bell housing area is too high and large to fit in the trans tunnel. Not that I really contemplated doing this. I was more just for curiousity sake.

Front Pulley removal
Randy, I notice you live in Pomona. I'm assuming California. I lived there from 1961 to 1980, attended elementary (Arroyo), middle (Junior High in those days-Marshall), high school (Ganesha), and college (Cal Poly) there. My stepmother, brother, sister, and son now all reside in diffiernt parts of that city so I occaisionally still spend time there.

VG30DETT swap
The VG30DETT is just so damned wide that it's a tough swap into an S30 but I have seen it done. Troy of Too Intense Restorations set one up a couple years ago. I don't know if he still owns it or what it cost to build.

'70 Rust-Free Arizona Z Going Cheap!
You'll need to decide quick as there's less than a day to go and it already has a bid and I'll bet 'tandaone' has a maximum bid of more than the $.99 he's showing.

Backfire
Or weak rings or a problem in the PCV system allowing fumes to enter the crankcase. I don't want to sound like and alarmist, it's just that I've experienced both of those personally. Take a compression check.
