Which year 280z S30 would you recommend?
Does your 78 have factory air? If so it would have that same system you describe which operates the mode door atcuator, ficd, etc. My 78 has dealer installed ac so no vaccum system.

L 24 engine
That is the red covered one. I used to have the sheets you mention but haven't been able to find them since moving form La Verne to Upland about 9 years ago.

L 24 engine
Without adding more fuel to all of this (hopefully) I'm posting a scan of the 240Z oil cooler kit from the Datsun Competition Department in the early 70s.

Moonpup, the reason you don't know where to begin is becacuse there's nothing for you to say. You throw these little bits and pieces of yours into a thread, and I'm not just talking about this one, maybe you just need to listen a little more or perhaps a lot more.

anyone seen this hood before?
Well, the thing is, I believe that those were installed on the earlier cars with carbureation. I've never heard of vapor lock being a problem with fuel injection what with 37+ psi of fuel pressure. And if he really could have gotten $150 for it on eBay, it would be on eBay.

No High Beams
It (Haynes) also mentions the DAF 'carburettor' which is a single downdraft two barrel as the standard 240Z intake for cars without emission control. There are a few other things in that manual that don't exist on NAM cars that I can't think of right off the top of my head. One of those manifolds is always on eBay with a rather high buy it now price. But, to answer the question, yes passing lights are momentary high beams. My 810 has them.

240z sells for $29,000
No, it wasn't that one. It didn't sell......again.
-
No High Beams
No such thing in my 78 nor does the FSM show one. Nor have I ever come across a pre 79 with the passing light feature.

No High Beams
No passing lights on the US S30. That came along with the ZX.

Fuel injector Prob. 77 280z
Tank may be crudded up. I had to deal with that when I first got mine. My car had been sitting for 4 1/2 years. But first, try replacing the fuel filter. Have you checked the fuel pressure?

No High Beams
You probably have a problem in the switch itself. My car had that problem when I first got it and I solved it by changing the switch. There are threads here on disassembling and cleaning the contacts. Here's one. I no longer have the extra switch I mention in the thread. http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18114&highlight=high+beams

holley carbs help!!!
So, is it a Holley 4bbl carb or 2 Holley 2bbl carbs?

Fuel injector Prob. 77 280z
You mean 'ether' as in starting fluid? In that case you're not getting fuel. There are many possible reasons. Fuel pump, fuel pump relay, ignition relay, fuel filter, and on and on. Do you have a factory service manual? There's a troubleshooting sequence in there for not getting fuel. Try this link. It's a pdf so you'll need and acrobat reader. http://www.atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/efisystem/280zfuelinjectionbook.pdf

Fuel in oil on new engine rebuild
The standard is 37/38 psi. You're about 5-6 psi over and that could make a difference.

skyline on ebay!!
You say it was 'only a GT' but IMO that's what made it unique. Every one I've ever seen is some kind of a replica or clone. I personally don't think as much of that as others obviously do. I don't know how many times I've been told 'you should drop a stroker in the Z or the 810'.

David, as I reacall, yours had a clean original look. Don't see many like that.

holley carbs help!!!
Yeah, those Holley 5200's will bolt directly on a manifold designed for a Weber 32/36 DGV. They (the Holleys) were cheap, you could find them all over the junkyards. Unless you have access to someone who is really a wizzard with carbs, I doubt that you could ever get a pair to work right on a L6 engine.

Now on Ebay !!!!!
We've discussed both of those cars here. The red one recently and Burt's car (the Silver one) to the point where no one wants to discuss it anymore.

holley carbs help!!!
Guys, like I said, or at least I suspect, I don't think he's talking about a four barrel. This is the guy who met up with Victor in the Albertson's parking lot some time ago. IIRC he said that his car has a Clifford manifold with Holley carbs. They are probably 2bbl Holley 5200's. Pinto carbs. They were a liscensed copy of a Weber 32/36 DFAV used by Ford on the 2.0 and 2.3 4 cylinder engines.

Which year 280z S30 would you recommend?
Not so at all. Except for the location and style of a couple of switches/transmitters/etc., they are virtually identical. But, then again, to a 12 year old, I would expect that all four years would be an 'electric nightmare'. But seriously, they're not much different.

Is the asbestos fuel line cover necessary?
I don't know if that hole needs to be plugged but a rubber hose cap would look better. Should be able to find one at a hardware store or an auto parts store with the Dorman cabinets or 'Help' section.

Happy BD Beandip!
Happy birthday to a fellow Oregonian. Though I've not lived there since I was 5, over 50 years ago, I was born in Portland. I've visited a few times over the years and will again. Sound like Phred is roughly my age.
