I always view claims like 'adds an extra 10 hp' with some skepticism. I use K&N drop in filters in my Z and my 810 mainly because they can be cleaned and reused. Not because of any horsepower claims. Notice that they claim better air flow but they don't really mention filtration in their ads. That's because they don't filter any better than a good quality paper filter. Maybe they flow more air but that alone won't give you any kind of noticable horsepower increase. Use whatever filter you like but don't let the manufacturers claims be your main focus. They're all in business to sell but they all can't be the best.

I really don't know what was implied. Let's see, we started with a fog light installation which failed in about five miles. He was told to check his charging system but he'd already done that checked it (13.5v at an idle) tach is blown (whatever that means) so he doesn't know the idle speed (I guess). Based on that I really have no recommendation. Sounds like screwed up wiring to me. I know that sounds really general but it is so commonplace on these cars. It's really hard to troubleshoot when I'm not actually looking at the car. But then again, I've never had the problem that is being described here. My comment was merely about the two types of alternators and what would happen if one got them mixed up. As far as the 220 a.h. alternator, it ain't going in a Z without a major rewire!
  3. A general synopsis here: Basically those that go exclusively on what they've heard, don't like the ZX. I used to be in that catagory. Those that have had some experience with them realize that it's just another car in the progression. They couldn't keep making the S30 forever. I r&r'd the AC system for a guy in 2003 when I was sitll living in Fontana. His car was a 1981 280ZX. I had reason to drive the car during testing and though it was a little squattier than my 280 and leaned a little more in the corners, it was just as enjoyable to drive. Now I'm comparing it to my 280. I can't really compare it to either of the 240's I owned since that was over 30 years ago and I'd be relying on memory (dangerous!). But don't say 'it's not a Z' or that you'd only buy it for parts. Nissan says its a Z and they built it. The new one is also a 'Z' as are the Z31, and Z32, like it or not.
  4. That coupled with the fact that a 77 280Z is not worth what he probably expects to get for it, regardless of the mileage. Maybe to him but not to others in the know. Ebay is probably the right place for this car.

If you put and internally regulated alternator in a car that already has and external regulator it should cause some kind of problem. I don't know if it would cause over charging. Are the connections the same for both types of alternator? That's something I never had cause to research. And on the other subject, the 220 amp alt, I hope you were just being facetious!
  6. Wonder what the reserve is? I've said it before, and I own a 280Z, there isn't one that's worth the $24k+ he paid for it. At least not yet. (Except maybe a 650 mile BPE).

Jackhammer, I fully understood where you were coming from. The 'ignorant whiney dumb asses' aren't the ones calling the cops. Tactless? No man, you're spot on on this one. I'm a homeowner and I make every attempt to get to know my neighbors, especially the ones next door or directly across the street. They make better allies than advisaries. To put your car in the driveway and cover it with mud serves what purpose. I'm glad I don't live in that neighborhood. I think I'll stay out of this from here on since there are only a few in this thread that 'get it'.
  8. I guess there's really nothing wrong with a ZX, 79 or any other year. I just have my preferences. For so song, I too was into ZX bashing. If you hear something enough, you start to give it credibility. But hell, my daily driver is an 810. You want to talk about something that's not a Z? Anyway, further research has led me to believe that they (ZX's) really aren't substantially heavier than a later S30 say 75-78. And I've seen some really nice examples of the ZX at the Nissan/Datsun gatherings here in SoCal. If the deal is right, and you like the car, it's really your opinion that matters.

We have debated that in the past. My opinion is use the 180. This also and item that I insist on OEM. You can run aftermarket as long as it has the larger opening that a Nissan thermostat has. Many of them don't. A cooler thermostat doesn't make the car run cooler. It just make it take longer to warm up. The hotter one is actually a bit above an L engines normal operating temperature.

What we are saying, however, is that in the case of the fan clutch, OEM is better. That's from experience in my case. I bought one from Autozone, returned it twice finally getting a refund and bought one from Nissan. The aftermarket one, at least in my case, did not sufficently cool the engine. That, in itself, could lead to a 'major, money-sucking repair'.
  11. My 810 averages 19.5/25.5 city/highway. It's a 5 speed. Right now it has the standard B 5spd which has the same ratios as the 280Z. I'll soon be puttting a 83 ZX 5 spd in it so the mileage might increase slightly. I'm 6'2" and if I wear a hat it will touch against the headliner unless I tilt the seat a little. The 510 actually has about the same headroom. I've owned a couple of those in the past also.
  12. And the Craig's list 810 listing has been deleted. Interesting!

He's been on my ignore list since somewhere around his second post. How old was the post you quoted? Don't stir him up he might come back!
  14. Note the shifter mounting in these two attachments:
  15. That 810 is the same one that sold on eBay about two weeks ago for $660. It was a salvage title and I don't know if I believe the description being given by the new owner. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Datsun-810-sedan-DATSUN-810-ZMOTOR-FAST_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6188QQitemZ4588963421QQrdZ1 That WPL411 has been butchered to put the L motor in it.
  16. What's that red/orange looking thing on the stand beside the tire?:classic:
  17. I always thoght that the Honda blower motor change was to benefit 240Z owners. Being an MVAC tech, I would look into anything that make the a/c work better. But I own a 78 280Z and the fan has never been a problem. It moves a decent volume of air for either the heating or the a/c function. Good enough the cool the system down to under 40 deg. at the vents.
  18. Well, Lachlan, it looks like you've got some help from nearby. He seems to know the nuances of the 240K and has the knowledge and access to the parts to boot!
  19. If you're using a 'B' type 5 speed, you can use the clutch parts from a 2+2 or a ZXT. It's a little bigger than the standard Z clutch. 243mm vs. 225mm. Don't forget about the hydraulic stuff, master cylinder, slave cylinder, lines, etc. and the pedal assembly and hardware that goes with it.
  20. sblake01 replied to KDMatt's post in a topic in Engine & Drivetrain
DZR, I totally agree. I'd rather go to the junkyard and find a good used Nissan fan clutch that buy a new one from Kragen (That's our west coast Checker), Auto Zone, Pep Boys, etc. And mlc240z is correct. They're not that hard to recondition.
  21. Aren't all ZX or ZXT taillights 'euro'? That is, that they have amber turn signals. But as far as the S30, if the car is not euro then why should the taillights be? JMO.

John Morton :devious: And, serioulsy, in the total scope of things, who really give a flip what he says? I know I don't. I don't know or care what context the statement was made under. It's just a book. I know that's another thread but it has spilled over into this one.

My Z sat for nearly 5 years without being started by the previous owner. On the other hand my 810 sat for four years but the previous owner started it at least once every two weeks and drove it around the block a couple times a year. Results: Z-new gas tank, fuel lines, a couple of injectors, brakes, etc. before I could even think about driving it. 810: drove it home 55 miles, replaced the cold start valve and have been driving it ever since.
  24. sblake01 replied to jszarecki's post in a topic in Fuel Injection
That's fine for you but you don't have to pass and emissions test every two years.
  25. He says the dash is cracked in four places if you go the the questions at the bottom and click 'view all 6 questions'. The pictures must be of a cap.
