Hood Vents
They are functional as are the stock ones. I have also seen the 70-76 hood louvered which would probably let more heat out than the stock vents or the MSA vents.

Question about my battery tender and optima
My battery tender gets warm to the touch pretty much in the way Stephen describes. I'm not using it on an Optima but it reads around 13.15-13.18 when the steady green comes on.

Hood Vents
It could be done on an earlier hood although it would be much easier to install them on a 77-78 hood which already has the cutouts. Look carefully at the raised area around the vents on the blue hood. The blue one is a 77-78 hood and the black one is a 70-76.

Drug this home today
EFI operates at a regulated pressure of roughtly 36.3 psi. That would pretty much eliminate the chance of vapor lock. I could see it maybe helping on a carbureated car.

Like I said whether required or not, the fans weren't on the 280Z models in the US. If this car is a 77 and has/had to meet the 77 requirements, those fans would not be a part of those requirements. Some people are of the impression that the injector fan setup does something for performance. I've seen a few 75-78 280Zs that people have added those fans to. I actually helped someone put that setup on his 280Z. To this day we've seen no difference in performance, mileage, etc. Also, only the 79-83 ZX had those fans. The other L series engined US market cars (810-RWD Maxima) did not have them.

In a way, Alan T. did respond to that in his first paragraph. I do recall that the two S31s I've seen had 'KM/H' speedometers.

Positive battery terminal safety tip
I've seen similar ones on other vehicles. My 1990 Ranger has one but it's the wrong configuration. I've also seen them in auto parts stores. This place has them: http://www.remybattery.com/Departments/Cable--Accessories/Terminal-Protectors--Boots.aspx

The injector fans are actually emissions equipment (look it up) so I don't get the comment about the Japan market cars needing them more. They were not on the US 280Zs. The showed up here on the 280ZX. They might have been added to this car at some point as this car has been in the US for a while. I also notice a ZX steering wheel on this car which is different from what Alan's scans show.

What am I missing? Doesn't the block stamp say 'L20 505820'? Or is that a '6'? Arnie? You're closer........

The two S31's I've seen both had the L20E which have what appeared to be basically the same EFI as the US market 280Z.

I also did that on my 78.

wheels?
They won't fit a Z. The Miata bolt pattern is 4 x 100 vs the Zs 4 x 114.3.

Datsunland Museum article
Heavily buttered.....The DHM is, as they say, what it is. I just hope that they're able to keep it going since the museum corporation deal didn't work out.

Cold start problems on '78 280Z
But, on the other hand, if the temp sensor had a bad connection or was non functional, the ECU would see a cold engine, all the time which I've seen and even experienced on my own vehicles. That's what I described in my last post and why I don't think you have a temp sensor related problem. The CSV only opens when the temperature is low enough and then only for a maximum of 9 seconds (I believe) which is how long it takes for the coil in the thermotime switch, which gets its signal from the starting signal, to heat up and break contact.

Like varnish?

4 or 5 speed identification
The 80-83 (84 if you count the RWD Maxima) has one tab but the 79 ZX still has two tabs like the 77-78 280Z...

All 79 coupes had R180 regardless of trans. exc. for the GL.

1977 280z starting problem
You don't have to remove the cover. You'll have to set the engine at TDC, remove the oil pump and position the distributor drive so that distributor is in the right position.
