  1. Pictures of the front cover
  2. The input shaft was not very loose before the disassembly and there is no damage to the input shaft from broken sleeve grinding or riding on it. Luckily thanks to @Jeff G 78 I have a donor 4 speed to get a front cover and use as reference. The syncros do have some wear and one appears to be ground down and a step is evident in the teeth. The gears look decent for the most part but a few have some small chunks missing out of them likely caused by the loose metal floating around inside the case. How many gears and internal parts do the 4 and 5 speed share? If necessary could I use some of the matching gears from the 4 in the 5 speed?
  3. This video is the only image I have of the front cover. I'll have a pic on Tuesday but yes the sleeve was inside of the throwout bearing and sheared off at the base of the front cover. IMG_5227.MOV Ahh the bearing ball retainer, that makes sense I just googled it and this seems to look like it.
  4. Hey Guys, About a month or so ago I started having some issues with my transmission in my 77 280z. So I decided to remove it from the car and have a friend of mine rebuild it. We have ran into a few issues upon getting the case open and I could really use some input. First off the transmission is out of a parts car (my car was an automatic) the parts car was also a 1977 but it is unknown how many miles were on it. Anyways the transmission developed the following issues upon swapping it into my car. 1. Downshifting into first was impossible except when at a complete stop. 2. would not stay in 2nd or 5th gear while not under load. 3. Vibrations in the clutch pedal upon initial engagement of the clutch. I figured these issues were caused by the trans being 40 years old but when my buddy started the project he found... 1. The sleeve that is part of the front cover where the throwout bearing rides was completely sheared off. This is obviously the cause off the rattling but has anyone ever seen this happen or know why it might happen? 2. We found all this debris inside the case. This metal is not gear material it is sheet steel that appears to be riveted and hinges. We have no idea where it goes within the transmission 3. One of the 3 roll pins was broken in half but it was still in place until he removed it. Any input would be great guys, thank you.

With the key in the on position I'm getting the following readings at the T plug. Solid yellow wire - Getting battery voltage Yellow w/ Black stripe - No voltage So according to you Zed Head my L wire is the one not getting voltage.

Thank you I will have to look and see which of the T connector wires is getting voltage and which is not. Do you know what colors wire the Sense and L wire are? This way I can figure out which wire isn't getting voltage. I have never seen my charge lamp turn on but my gauge does work.

Hey Guys, During the process of getting my 77 280z running I have ran into an issue. The car runs great but it is only running on battery power, the alternator is not charging. I first suspected that the alternator was just old and worn out so I followed the ZX upgrade procedure and eliminated the stock voltage regulator. I completed the install and am still getting the same results (no charging). During my research I have found that most people have some sort of diode on the back of the alternator connected to the voltage output wire and grounding to the housing. My car does not have this diode. I also am getting battery voltage at one of the T connector wires. Im stumped currently so any input would be great.
  10. Took a look at the car when I got home this evening. Please excuse the crappy picture quality. The build date appears to be 4/77 The color code is 305 from what I can read. The sticker is pretty faded. There appears to be a small cover plate where the fuel level sending unit should sit. (See picture) does that look correct?
  11. Ahh okay, I'll have to drop it and see how bad it is then determine if I can/want to tackle it myself.
  12. Thanks Jeff! That will help a lot. I've got plenty of family members and friends that have garages that I can use for larger repairs/upgrades. I plan on dropping the tank, I installed a G3 filter and it already is nasty. Do you know anyone locally that cleans and seals fuel tanks? I'm impressed with the body of this car. The only spot of major rust is on the passenger rear quarter which you can see in the picture. I'll look tonight for the paint code. I think the factory color is some form of blue. The paint on it now appears to have applied with a brush. I will also check the build date tonight.
  13. Unfortunately the car has to sit outside after it sat in a barn for 10 years. Nice job on spotting it Jeff! I might have to ask you a few questions as I get deeper into the car. So far I've been working my way through the fuel system (new pump, hose, cleaning injectors, ect.) The car now is trying to idle but needs a bit more work to get to get to that point. It is indeed a 1977 and I will be sure to look up Blue's tips, thanks for tip. The car is an automatic, I've been doing my research on making the swap to a short ratio 5 speed. So far finding parts locally has been the real issue.
  14. I just so happened to be poking around on here and came across this post. I am the new owner of that 280z.
