Gearbox Oil - Should I Change?
Caution re using Redline oil in the gearbox. I filled my recond box with MT-90 and immediately noticed that the shifts were harsh. So the oil was drained and was found full of tiny brass particles. Now it could be that there is an oil unrelated problem so the jury is out until the box is stripped.

Anyone here go to the leyburn sprints????
So biker, does your green car have a yellow grille? Second in class is pretty good.

Anyone here go to the leyburn sprints????
A couple of us went along for a look on Sunday, great day. Very intimidating event, narrow road, lots of barriers, no practice, no warm up lap, just drop the clutch and go. Jon Siddons with his Gold Coast based 240Z was outstanding. So commited and smooth, so fast. Don't know where he came yet but see www.leyburnmotorsprints.com.au.

t-5 or nissan 5 speed
Anything is possible but if you are going to retain the standard internals there does not seem to be much you can do to improve them. I rebuilt mine recently, loctited the new bearings in and filled her up with Redline MT90 oil which should help a bit.

t-5 or nissan 5 speed
My experience with the late Nissan 5 speed is that with a high torque turbo engine and 220hp at the rear wheels it tends to spin those bearings housed in aluminium casings. I figure that this is caused by high end loadings transmitted to the bearings by the helical cut gears. So IMHO, while the Nissan box is a good one and nice to use, 300hp at the rear wheels is getting beyond it.

parking brake install...HELP ***
They are a bitch to get at but basically you have to lever them out IIRC with whatever suits. An old flat screwdriver that you don't want for anything else and can grind to suit should work. But spray them with WD40 or whatever first.

He emailed me the pics he had of my car. One was really good so I have ordered a print of it.

Z Nats Supersprint Pics Available
Unknown to the Q club at the time, a pro photographer attended the QR supersprints and took some car on the track photos. Contact Osella Photographics, 97 Degen Road, Capalaba, Q. Phone 3245 7941, wayne@osella.com.au. www.osella.com.au. Price for a colour A4 size print is $20, he also does A3 and A3 plus sizes. This is not an advert for him and he has nothing to do with the club. But if you do buy any photos then try and post them here for the benefit of others.

Transmission woes
Don't know about the 4 speed but if reverse is knocked around on a 5 speed too much, the small idler gear may become burred resulting in it jamming in reverse, and/or, being difficult to get into reverse.

Supra Gearbox - How Strong?
Thanks for the good info. I assume that a Dellow bell housing is used to adapt to a Nissan engine?

Bush mounting
Those bushes don't rotate at all, they are sandwiched on the outer surface while the inner metal bush, which is bonded to the rubber, locks at each end. If you remove one of the large (24mm spanner?) cap bolts at either end you will see how this is done. Suspension arm travel therefore depends on the rubber itself flexing. Which is why, when the bushes are replaced and the cap bolts tightened, the suspension arm should be in the normal static load position. Which is why incidentially the OE rubber bushes are the best option in such a design. Urethane does not stand up to the twisting such a bush has to bear near as well.

Urethane bushings
It would be interesting to know the reasoning behind the rear rubber sway bar mounts idea. From everything that I have read and from a little practical experience, all sway bars should be as rigidly mounted as possible from a performance perspective.

Supra Gearbox - How Strong?
Anyone had experience putting a lot of torque through a Supra gearbox eg big V8 or turbo? How do they hold up? Is there anything stronger thats better, readily available and will fit?

03 Nationals Supersprint Results
At long last the Supersprint and Regularity results are available! Go to www.zcarclubq.org.au and click on Nationals. I will attempt to answer any questions. And no, I was not responsible for the delay in making them available.:cheeky:

Urethane bushings
Re stock rear sway bar mounts, sure they won't usually break using urethane bushes. But since strengthening them on my 260, rear end breakaway on the track has become much more predictable and progressive, plus, a lighter rear bar can be used. But if people are happy with the stock setup then thats OK by me.

How to start an argument...
Good point. The Japanese are notorious for not changing engine oil, etc yet in both used ex Japan turbo engines I bought the turbo's were in good condition. It is probably more a question of potential claims under warranty and perhaps some rationalisation as to the range of engines Nissan produce. Anyway, the cam drive belts do not last forever, turbo or not.

Urethane bushings
For anti sway bars and tension rods they are excellent, providing as I said the former mounts are beefed up. Try the following test on the stock rear bar mounts. Jack the rear up so that you can remove one wheel. Then remove the bar end suspension arm connecting link from the same side as the removed wheel. Lower the car so that the other wheel is sitting firmly on the ground. Place a piece of pipe over the end of the exposed bar to gain some leverage and push it up/down, at the same time observing the bar mount on the body. You can actually see the mount moving around under load.

Is the 240k cool or not???
Someone, who obviously has good taste, thinks that all 240K's suck.:classic:
-
Urethane bushings
On the 260Z anyway, the stock anti-sway bay mounts are inadequate and should be beefed up, even when using stock rubber bushes. Using urethane suspension pivot bushes is questionable given the compliance designed into the stock bushes, at the very least they could inhibit normal suspension travel which possibly could lead to component cracks. On rear pillar cracks, they are the direct result of body flex, nothing to do with urethane bushes.

t-5 how much work?
Good site Craig. I'd guess that the T5 would be stronger than the alternative Nissan 5 speed.

Bluebird 5 Speed
Agreed Steve, if it don't fit it aint no good and I would not have a clue about what fits and what doesn't. Just passing on some info about the guts of the various boxes that might, might, fit.:cheeky:

Bluebird 5 Speed
Bloody hell, slight correction to my last post. It now turns out that the FJ20DET box is likely a C series, not a B. Which probably makes it a FS5W71C which I think is the same box used in the R31 Skyline and all Pintara's. The internal differences, not considering ratios, are slightly higher capacity needle bearings for 1, 2 and 3 gears and a different front countershaft bearing, in the C box. So, if I've got it right now, the R31 Skyline and the Pintara C boxes should be the most durable, and given the less power/weight of the Pintara, all things being equal a Pintara used box should be in the best condition.

Bluebird 5 Speed
Having just bought a gearbox bearing kit for the box which came attached to a FJ20DET engine, which gearbox is identified as a FS5W71B (late) and as far as I can tell is a high spec box, the following Nissan models are identified as compatible. 280C, 280ZX, Bluebird, Gazelle and Skyline. Year models available on request.
