Thanks I will check it out. I just did a "wet check" on cylinder 6 and it went from the 90 to 140

Well I'm no mechanic that's for sure. I can do the basics but when it comes to inside an engine....not so much. But I'm down to learn. and thankfully my best friend is the shop foreman at the local Nissan dealership and is a very skilled mechanic. I will say that when I got to the 6th cylinder it seemed to not crank as hard maybe because the battery was getting low. So I put back all of the plugs and wires started her and let her idle for a good 10 minutes and redid the process just checking the 6th cylinder. It cranked fine after the 10 minute idle and I got 90. I'm going to check again and squirt some oil in there for a wet test. I just don't have the mechanical knowledge to adjust valves at this time.

Description of the car from eBay

The previous owner send over 10k of receipts along with the title of the car. Receipts from Datsun Sprit were included. The only reason I mentioned that is that's a big reason I'm so suspect that anything is seriously wrong with the engine. I will do a compression check. I'll look at the intake manifold and see if there is spots to tap into. I suspect not. It is a very short manifold, harada is the make. I was just reading the article about routing the blowby to the exhaust. That may be the best option if there is no other way to rid of the blowby and the compression is good. I'll see if I can talk to Les from Datsun motorsports too as his shop is two blocks from my house

Well I just bought this car. It's a 1970 240z with a P79 head and a F54 block out of a 81-83 280zx non turbo. The complete engine was rebuilt less than 6000 miles ago by a very reputable Datsun engine builder, Eiji Hosomi, out of Datsun Spirit. When I bought it the PCV was capped with a freeze plug and there was a breather hose coming off the valve cover. This was smokey and stinky since I've had it. The previous owner said that it had always smoked a little but recently had smoked more. Doing a lot of reading I figured I would uncork the PCV hoping to reduce the blow by coming out of the crankcase and setup a catch can with a breather filter on top. I did just that this morning and this thing is smoking even more now it seems. There is white gray stinky gas smelling smoke almost billowing out of the catch can breather filter. I drove it around the block and she runs SOLID. She just smokes a lot out of the catch can to where it's coming into the cab and it's unbearable. I've read and read. Rings are shot? Compression test? Leak Down? The car runs just fine I would think the compression is fine....I'm bumming. I have money left over from buying the car to cover fixing stuff, that I was hoping to break at the track, not to get it ready for the track! Any insight is appreciated. I need to hit the sac. Night shift sucks. I've been up since 3pm yesterday and I am beat!
  9. Wow, that is one impressive engine bay. Thanks for sharing your setup. I see you have a breather filter on your pcv tube with a little shield on it to catch the oil. That is pretty sweet too. Im gonna try and run them together to a can with a breather on top and see how it goes. Hopefully opening up the pcv that is capped right now will reduce the blowby from the valve cover breather.
  10. Ok thank you! I was just looking at a pic of your engine bay this morning, when I googled ITG filter for triple mikuni's. Just ordered mine...I was hesitant to setup both the crankcase and valve cover to vent together but if it's working well I will go this route! Super clean engine bay!
  11. Ya I have triple mikuni's on there
  12. I'm sorry I should have specified. I'm wanting to setup a PCV and or crankcase breather to a catch can. Currently my PCV is capped with a freeze plug and I have a garden hose coming off my valve cover where the crankcase is breathing that is dangling down in my engine bay that I think has too much blow by coming out due to the PCV being capped? My plan is to uncap the PCV, put a stock PCV tube in, route that to the catch can and also the crankcase breather to the catch can with a breather filter on top of the catch can. Doing lots of readings and looking at pictures I can't tell if this is the best option to vent blow by. Do I hook up both the PCV vent and the crankcase vent to the catch can with a breather on top of the can? Or do I just connect the PCV to the can and put a breather filter on top of the valve cover to vent the crankcase?
  13. I'm about to do a catch can setup on my 240z and wanted to hear about and see others setups. How do you like them and how do they perform?
  14. Perfect thanks! Another question. After endless searching, for a catch can setup...do I route both the PCV breather AND the crankcase breather to it? or just a breather filter for the crankcase and PCV to the can? I'm looking at a dual baffled can with two inputs and a breather filter on top.
  15. So I found one on eBay. Now is this thing welded in or just fit in?? And is there a seal? I'm running a F54 block from a 280zx so it should fit right in..
  16. Yea it has a L28 with triple mikuni carbs. I need to figure out how to fix this issue. The blowby is noxious and stinky. When I'm at a stop it appears as if my engine bay is smoking but it's just blowby. It's a lot. I need to figure out how to get that pcv tube

Hey Rich! Already joined the San Diego Z club. As soon as I get off night shift I will make it to a meet! zach

She's already had A LOT of modifications done that got rid of original parts. It has a F54 block with a P79 head, no more original engine, however still have the original valve cover. Most all of the original interior is gone. Has a custom fiberglass dash. So keeping it in original shape is already done for I'm afraid.
  20. Hmmm. Confusing still. Some say it's ok to have plugged but most say have it vented. Looks like he chose to have it vented which is what I want to do. Looks like he got the pcv tube off of another block. Does anyone know where I can get one that doesn't have to come off another block? Can I just buy the tube?

I'm Zach. I live in San Diego. I just bought my first Datsun. A 1970 240z. She was produced in July of 1970 and ended up in my hands 46 years later. I believe I am the 3rd or 4th owner. I am an active duty Navy RN and I work in the Emergency Dept in San Diego. I've been in the Subaru community for the past 10 years or so and am a big fan of drag racing. Original plans for the car was to put a RB25 engine in but that may change! Man these Mikuni carbs sounds phenomenal. Anyways, just joined this morning on my shift at work at zero dark thirty when we weren't being bombarded by sore throats and knee pain! She has a lot done to her already, pretty clean from what I can see. Can't wait to get some time off work to make her my own.
  22. Hello everyone! Proud new owner of a 1970 240z. HLS3007326 to be exact! A beautiful car. This is my first Datsun ever, and let me tell you, I am in love. I'm at work right now but I will add pictures asap! First off, the car has a rebuilt F54 block with a P79 head, both have less than 6000 miles on them. Issue at hand: The PCV tube coming off of the block is capped off with a freeze plug, the crankcase breather has quite a large hose that is venting directly to atmosphere and seems to have excessive blowby, which is pretty stinky (which is funny because one of my top reasons to buy this car was no smog checks!) and this can lead to ring failure I've read.. I've done my fair share of research on this and seems to point in the direction of a catch can of sorts. So, my issue is there is no PCV tube coming off of the block, at all. just capped. I cannot find this tube online anywhere (I can find the pcv valve and hose, but not the tube). Also, if and when I do find this tube, will venting this along with the crankcase vent to a catch can solve the problem? Will venting the PCV and the crankcase reduce the blowby? Why would the engine builder cap this off? Thanks in advance to any insight and help you can provide. I added a couple pictures --Zach
