I had it repainted a couple of years ago. They matched the color # which is 240. Thanks for the compliments
  3. I checked for fluid leaks and the master looks full. I am in Louisville Ky. The next step is to take it back, print out the service manual for the mech and hope for the best.
  4. A new developments today. I could feel the travel of the pedal change over the last few days. Pedal would have to travel further before it starts to disengage and then engage as soon as the pedal starts to be released from the floor. After work it was tough to get into first if it was stopped. Reverse grinded like crazy. I got home put it on ramps and inspected the slave. It is so far out that the large boot was getting push off the trans housing. He had put the 1-1.5 inch longer rod on it and you can tell the fork is so much further back than it should be. I tried to adjust the pedal to see if that helped but it would not go into gear even if I adjusted it back to where it was earlier today. To make matters worse the shifter broke at the altered weld as I was trying to force it into gear. At this point I think it is installed wrong. Why else would you have to make a larger rod. Can you put a fork on wrong? A collar backwards. Im screwed.
  5. I have the service manual so the slave is to spec. What about the cheap clutch pressure plate being at fault. The mechanic told me the softer pedal was do to the fingers on the PP. If thats the case could it be that the PP is a weak one and this is as good as it gets. The person who put the clutch in is experienced, just not with the Z so I am assuming everything was put in correctly.
  6. sorry thought I had my sig added. It is a 77 280z with the 81 zx trans/dif swap. I did not do the work myself but wanted to. I had alot of slippage when it was put in so we went to the shorter through out collar. When we went to the shorter collar it came back with a longer slave rod. About 1.25 inches longer. WTF. Nothing else was changed out except the collar but he said he had to go with the longer one to get it right. That makes no sense but not knowing clutches I am left with taking his word. The master is a year old and the slave is new.
  7. One other thing , when in neutral with my foot off pedal I get a noise from trans which goes away as soon as I press the clutch in.
  8. My new clutch seems so much different than my old clutch. It seems a lot easier to push the pedal in(soft), because of that it is hard to tell when the clutch is starting to engage. I used to be able to chirp the tires if I wanted to but now it wont even if I dump the clutch it will not chirp the wheels. Could this be a pressure plate that just doesnt engage like it shoulld? I am not sure of the brand but it was from a chain store.
  9. ok. just wanted to make sure I got it right before we drop the trans again. Didnt want to do it a third time. thanks everyone
  10. If my PP isnt to the right spec is there a formula that I need to follow to get the correct engagement. PP height + collar = correct height. Or do I just get a smaller collar and hope it works.
  11. thanks Carl your explanation helped alot. I assumed the zx junkyard 5 speed trans had the zx collar but who knows. Instead of dropping the trans again(need mechanic) I may just shorten the slave rod.
  12. I have researched, called z places and asked questions on forums but there is still some fog with my 77 coupe 4 speed to 81 zx 5 speed conversion. My clutch isnt engaging all the way so my trans is slipping. This should be straight forward since I have a 77 280z coupe and got the trans from a 81zx coupe-non turbo. According to every one my flywheel should be the same for 77 and 81 280s (225mm). According to everyone my clutch should be the same for 77 and 81 280z. (that includes clutch disk, pressure plate and bearings). If all these parts are interchangeable between 280z and 280zx then why is the collar for a type b 4speed larger.(I assume type B is the 4speed that came on my 77) See comparison here; http://www.zparts.com/zptech/articles/trans_swap%20parts/4tobear_specs1.html That means the pressure plate for the 4 speed is different than the 5 speed but everyone lists only one clutch. If it isnt fully engaging would the taller original 77z collar make it engage better or disengage even more. The collar that is in it is the 81zx collar that everyone says to use. FYI: I have adjusted my pedal shorter, longer and to spec. The new clutch cost around $200+ so I dont think its a cheapo. (someone said he thinks its a crappy clutch and thats is my problem) 1977 280z * ZX distributor mod * 4x4 front calipers

I am using the collar that came with the 5 speed transmission. I assume the clutch may not be to spec so the type b 5 speed collar is too short. The collar that was in the original 77 4 speed type b is probably taller(according to zcarparts.com). That collar would match my flywheel. I guess that is the only other type b collar.

In my searching i have found that I probably have a mismatched part. I have read that the clutch on back should match the trans. That means I may have the 77 collar, bearing, fork and slave which should be 81zx parts. Is this correct or can I keep some of the 77 parts?

I was directed to this site to show the different collar sizes. http://www.zparts.com/zptech/articles/trans_swap%20parts/4tobear_specs1.html does anyone know if my 77 4speed collar is different from the 81 zx collar? I dont know how the clutch inners work but I assume a different size one isnt letting the plates come together all the way. Do I need a different fork or slave from the zx?
