  1. The days of cheap anything are pretty much over. Add $100 when estimating cost for Z parts.
  2. It's an '80ZX. The original exhaust exited on the passenger side(north America/continental Europe). I bought headers and exhaust pipe from MSA for the '81-'83 cars that exit on the driver's side. I deleted the plate(valance) that hangs down under the rear bumper, and above where the exhaust pipe exits. The fitment is perfectly snug using the existing factory hangars. Sean sends you some mounting hardware with the muffler. And I'm sure whatever else you purchase that requires it.
  3. I have MSA headers straight piped into the Z Story JDM muffler. No resonator, just straight in. I wouldn't have it any other way. I love to take it through the tunnels at 5k plus RPM as it screams like an F1 car. prob asking for a ticket but I can't really help it. I reckon that's what I'll tell the police after I'm pulled over.
  4. I appreciate the time taken for you guys to look it up/research it. I had a feeling it didn't get put there by BRE racing, but if it did, it would make for some pretty cool history. Big Randy's Engineering needs to make a stamp that isn't so misleading.
  5. Should've been more specific. The factory dish tops are claimed to have been replaced with Nissan flat tops. I can confirm that flat tops are in it. But can't confirm that they are OEM Nissan ones.
  6. A friend and I have been inventorying the loose parts of his '77 280z prior to paint and reassembly. He has an N42 engine he says is from an '80ZX. The head has the letters "BRE" stamped on the back of it. I have the original N47/N42 I pulled from my '80ZX years ago, and found no such markings. Any idea what it means? I see no obvious evidence of porting, and it was said to only be checked for straightness by a local machine shop(Don't know if its been shaved). The block does have Nissan flat top pistons. I don't know if it's been bored out at all, it's currently assembled. He says it's a .480 lift cam.
  7. Normal vacuum at idle will pull oil into the combustion chamber due to a compromised valve stem seal. At higher revs, it tends to seal a bit better, or a bit more.
  8. Let's hope they take the Black Pearl badge back from the Juke.
  9. Oh, that's what those are supposed to look like.
  10. They look like they could be the O-ring type GM/Ford injectors. They require an adapter for the intake manifold and can't be used with the stock fuel rail. As far as I can tell, the stock ECU won't run them well either. https://zcardepot.com/collections/fuel-injection/products/fuel-injector-14mm-o-ring-19-new-efi Sent from my moto e using Tapatalk
  11. A valve lash adjustment probably won't hurt. The valve trains on these cars are a little noisy when compared to modern hydraulic lifters. Some more so than others from what it seems. The fuel injectors are a little noisy by nature as well. Mine is a little noisier now that I have a header, plus my exhaust isn't totally welded up yet. Post a video of it idling if you can. Someone will let you know if it's abnormal.
  12. Yes..for what it's worth, I've connected my old original injectors both ways out of the car and they squirt fuel. On a side note, I think I have the same header, the MSA unpainted header? Anyway with a good gasket and proper torque it allows a bit more valve noise to get through than the original stock manifold. Lash is spot on in spec(feels like puling the first stick of gum out of a newly opened pack of gum). Also my exhaust isn't welded yet from the downpipe back. So maybe your ticking is a result of something similar. There is an ignition control module bolted on to the distributor of the ZX. I am unsure of it's location for your year S30.
  13. Might be a good time to pop that valve cover off and take several good pictures of the whole valve train for the group to observe. Perhaps even get a remote starter and post a video of the engine spinning no spark plugs/spade connector removed from starter.
  14. It was only clean because it was new then. I've never seen one at the 3 mark before, so I'm glad to get confirmation of what it's supposed to look like. You are making good progress. I've been watching this thread, trying not to get too involved as not to potentially confuse things. Hoping it all works out..
  15. I'm not entirely sure if yours is within acceptable parameters, but this is how i understand it is supposed to look. This is taken when reassembling my motor, which seems to be running just fine. Most people say turning the engine over with the cam bolt is bad, and it is better to use the crank bolt, or a remote starter. I have used the cam bolt in the past, without causing any apparent damage, but since have started using a remote starter.
  16. Not to take attention away from the task at hand, but have we verified proper TVS adjustment and checked for any moisture inside the casing? I'm not entirely sure that these symptoms are a result of that component, but I remember a stumble due to moisture/improper adjustment of my original TVS years ago..
  17. Right. At any rate they are pretty light, maybe 350lbs? Do you have a target weight you hope to achieve? Or just a light as possible while still retaining all items to keep it a livable road car?
  18. Sorry for not reading back, but did you did you end up with an SR 20 or a KA24DE?
  19. About as good as I'm going to get it. I've got some coilovers from TechnoToyTuning on order. Spendy, but I've just not been ok with the ride height. It's currently on Eibach loweing springs. Hope to get some Rota Shakotan wheels someday. For now, I'll just run it and enjoy it.
  20. Mine was stuck at half after I got it. About 20,000 miles later it started working again. The small 1/4 gauge has always worked.
  21. It's been $50 plus to fill up my '94 Nissan pickup 2.4L forever it seems. Cant imagine what it's like to have a V8.
  22. Getting things back together now. I'll put some more pictures whenever I get it out of the garage.
  23. Well, in your defense, it does say "by Nissan" in fine print on the rear ZX badge. Edit: I'm not sure what happened, but when i posted this, the last post was stating about how it still said Datsun on the ZX, but when I hit submit reply, like 9 or so other posts materialized instantly. So disregard, it's already been addressed.
  24. It's right at 10:1, I haven't checked compression yet. I put about 150 miles on it since the build and started prepping the car for paint. That's good that your pistons are cut. Hopefully you can salvage it. Sounds it's got the bones for a pretty good build.
