1. Yeah I can totally see the merit in going away from electrics. We are about to do triple Webers on my friends '77 280Z. Same story. . Butchered EFI parts. Best of luck. You'll get it sorted.@AK260 can tell you all about the 123 distributor.
2. Good luck finding a distributor. I just discovered excessive play in my distributor shaft in my '80ZX. I'll likely be going the 123 distributor route. I run FAST EFI from ZCarDepot. The engine is a F54 rebuilt/P79 with a .480 lift cam and shaved 0.80. FAST runs it just fine. There are a lot more tuning options with MegaSquirt or Haltech, but I'm not all that smart to use those haha.
3. Thanks for the replies.AK260 I've watched your video and it has been what's has sold me on the 123. The base timing is set to 10 degrees BTDC. But now I notice it wandering under the timing light. The dampener is solid. Edit: total advance should be 47 degrees
4. Additionally, the engine seems to run fine. No knocking or anything unusual. Slight exhaust tick somewhere between cyl no.5&6. Good compression across the board.
5. I'm walking a road many before me have traveled. The original distributor in my '80ZX has about a half inch of play in the shaft in either direction from a stationary position. The vacuum advance has been inoperable for about a year. I have been monitoring the distributor for some time, knowing that it is in its final days. Today on a drive, I noticed some hesitation, above that which is observed running a capped vacuum advance. Obviously I will not drive the car until replace it. Probably with the 1-2-3 Bluetooth distributor. The engine has about 800 miles in it since rebuild with mild cam. My question for the group is: Could I have possibly damaged my engine somehow running the distributor with more play than it should have? If I'm being honest, it's been slightly out of spec for shaft play for several months(of driving). But I only noticed the excessive play today, after about a 30 mile drive. Thanks for advice as always. (Tried to post a video but this cheap phone is not compatible with the future)
6. A pair of Blizzard of Oz tickets from 1981 Showbox Seattle. Edit: Paramount Theatre
7. Might as well do headers! Also, you might as well delete all that emissions stuff, or just cap off the ports and leave them off since it's already apart. I could clean mine up better, but I haven't. The car runs fine without all that. I have aftermarket EFi that controls cold idle and startup, but even before that with stock EFi after cold start injector /circuit delete you could mimic it by applying a little gas with the accelerator pedal. Unless of course you want to keep it as original as possible, which is perfectly fine too..
8. The S30 might have different clearances at the back of the engine compartment compared to my ZX, but if I let the trans and engine hang unsupported(engine mounts in place, trans mount removed), then the valve cover comes to rest on the firewall and one of the heater hoses going back into the firewall. Again, this might not happen on the S30.
9. Did you ever get the hanging idle sorted?
10. Possibly because it sold a few hours after it listed, or maybe the site is broken. It was a '76 2+2 in at least decent shape from the pictures for $1,000.00
11. Might be a decent project for someone looking for a 2+2 and don't mind waiting on a title. Or a parts car. https://offerup.com/item/detail/ad118712-01c7-3097-ad68-f1ad1ffdda5c
12. I used Toyota black FIPG(form in place gasket) on mine. It's holding fine after 1,000 miles at least, and the PCV system seems to be functioning fine. I'll bet that if I went and pulled on it with a bit of force it would break the seal though.
13. Excellent thanks for the follow up. I ended up straying far away from my original plan. Went and got a bigger cam, FAST efi, and totally rebuilt the bottom end along with the head. I ended up with the Fidanza flywheel and stock Excedy clutch.
14. I wish I still had my Vision Street Wear T-shirt.
15. Glad you didn't burn anything up. I caught Holley 750 on a 350 in an '86 Suburban on fire once. Had a fire extinguisher and caught it, but that initial sight of fire sure does wake you up.
16. At least the Mustang II is only a $7k car. https://offerup.co/FLWDUjFM8hb
17. Could it be that the valves are wrong? I could always be wrong, but wouldn't a taller valve require a thinner lash pad? Maybe it's got L28D valves? https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/nissan,1983,maxima,2.8l+l6+diesel,1211230,engine,exhaust+valve,5328
18. Thanks! Nothing to speak of. I installed some T3 coilovers a few weeks ago, and put a few pictures on the what did you do with your Z thread. I love them. Spendy, but it sure does zip around corners. I am driving it while it's still nice weather, then during the winter i will try to figure out wheel offset/tires and replace the turbo wheels. I'm thinking of Rota Shakotan or gold Rota RKR. I did end up with a Honda scooter with a 70cc kit and a Mukini carb.
19. I have the Fidanza flywheel/Excedy OEM clutch on my high(er) compression F54 with a .480 lift cam. It's great. And holds just fine. I don't have too much in the way of sound deadening in my car, so I noticed a little more noise from the transmission with the lightened flywheel. But after a week or so, I stopped noticing it.
20. Here's some guys with S13's that seems to have the same problem. Seems like they are leaning towards the ECU being from an automatic car used in a manual transmission application. https://zilvia.net/f/showthread.php?t=533340 I remembered stumbling on it while troubleshooting a low/rough idle on my D21 pickup years ago, but the single cam and dual cam intakes and throttle bodies are different. Turned out to be crud on my temperature sender.
21. The oil pressure gauge in my ZX sometimes reads near zero while cruising, then pops back into the normal range. It's a brand new rebuilt engine with a brand new Hitachi oil pump. It is not, however, a new oil pressure sender on the side of the block. it just goes all wonky sometimes. It does make me nervous seeing it like that, but I'm confident that it's getting constant oil pressure.
22. I've seen some of the new Defenders around. Sadly they are mostly a fashion accessory in this part of the world, and will likely never see their true capability off road. Glad the name lives on. They look like they come from the future.
23. Installed some T3 coilovers. I like the look over stock ride height a lot better. It's pretty mean around the corners too. A little more reasonable rear ride height
