  1. Trying to buy a tail bushing bushing for the transmission and the shipping is ridiculous
  2. I hope you picked one of those up. Called and none available.
  3. He is not 100% sure whether it's a '82 or '83 280zx and provided the pictures above. Sorry for the confusion that I keep refer to the close ratio transmission as FS5W71C. The photos above seem to suggest it is a FS5W71B close ratio, if I'm correctly match up the characteristic as @EuroDat PDF. regards
  4. I think the transmission above is still FS5W71B close ratio rather than FS5W71C. Am I correct?
  5. Seem like there's some insider at the salvage yards. I have an app that I get notify when any Z(x) available. Took off work early couple of times to get there and all left were broken windows, rusted body. In the engine bay, nothing but hoses. Are these stuff edible? Business is booming with these "classic" cars.
  6. I can identify the 2” shifter mount, the output shaft with shorter shroud. The diamond shape reverse lock. The single exhaust mount point. The 6 o’clock speedometer nut. The housing seem to be correct unless the internal gears are swapped to wide ratio, I’d say this is closed ratio. What do you say? of course I still keep other options available too
  7. I did read your thread and others how to identify closed ratio transmission and thank you. He said it’s from ‘82. The photos seem to have all the characteristics of a closed ratio. I’m keeping my options open. $1k is quite a bit of money. The current inflation doesn’t help either
  8. every now and then when the wind blows at the right direction and the atmosphere is ideal, I'd like to floor from stop light to "feel the need for speed". I'm very mellow driver and enjoy the things they were rather than abusing it.
  9. Now I’m contemplating to wether to invest in the ‘82 71C or to source a donor and make this existing 71B work. if I choose to keep the 71B as backup when the donor parts come along, what are the challenges of the 71C? I mean, look at the diagrams and discussions, seem like 71C is beefier in term of gears. Most if not all bearings should be the same sizes. What about cluster and main shaft hex nuts? Are they all left-handed or normal, right-handed. I learn from my 71B not rebuild when the car was apart, there’s a guy selling 71C, pretty penny, $1000. If I buy that, I’m going to rebuild it. What are your thoughts? regards
  10. Thats what I fear the transmission is unsalvageable…. The most damage is the main shaft’s end where the pin bearing caused havoc. I use 500 grits and it feel reasonably smooth. The synchro hub is ordered and on its way. I see quite a few 4 speed around but I’m not sure if the main shaft is compatible. thanks for all great suggestions. I will keep working at it. Stay tune
  11. Few other questions. 1. my trans doesn’t have the oil gutter. Should I put one in? 2. Only able to find cluster hex nut https://www.transmissionpartsdistributors.com/fs5w71-transmission-nut-for-cluster-shaft-fits-86-nissan-nis-220/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIkavUq9ag9wIVPg2tBh3-hAYFEAQYAiABEgJR4vD_BwE 3. it sounds stupid to reuse the main shaft nut if I cannot find replacement. both hex nuts are normal, right hand threaded
  12. Morning the broken needle bearing cased havoc. Look like the there’s high in the middle where I draw a black line.
  13. I’m fortunately found a YouTube clip and doesn’t look like I need to remove that gear at all. Take a look at minute 14:30 The only usable tool I can borrow from autozone is the 3 claws puller. I’m able to remove all with some “creativity”. Follow my methods at your own risks! I briefly examine the parts and so far so good. 2 broken parts. I bundle them in groups exactly the way I removed them. Will do a thorough cleanup and examine later. I used the vice on the outer bearing shaft and gently tap the shaft until it loosen. Seem to work. The idle gear’s ring clip destroyed my 2 tools. It’s so darn hard regards
  14. I was surprised the bearing in front of the countershaft gear was "easy" to remove. All the puller jaws I rented from Autozone were thin enough to pull it out. I resorted back to heating just the bearing and out of curious use the flat screw driver to to nudge a bit. To my surprise, it actually budge. I then gently pry out around bit by bit and big enough to put the puller in and pull off easily. As for the gear, snap ring is removed. Examine all angles and look really, really tight on the other side on the right. It looks like a single unit with the shaft. I'm 145lbs with all my might on the wrench trying to pull it off and the darn thing not even sweat. Even heating it up won't budge. I might have to do heating/cooling more. any other tricks? regards
  15. Morning, is the counter shaft gear is removable? I used 5 ton, 3 jaws puller with a wrench and it didn’t budged. The diagram show it should be removable
  16. You’ll be surprised how skilled you are when you’re motivated. 😉 Taking things apart has never been my problem 😉 every now and then I can’t put things back because I broke stuff in the taking out process 😉 The price gouging seem affect everything 😞 I only took the transmission out of the casing to examine. Other competing priorities are taking over. But I’m very itching to take each gear apart. Also, I’m hopping I can buy replacement parts from jp-carparts.com regards
  17. @EuroDat my outdated iPhone 8, I think, might be the cause of blurry… From the surface, there isn’t any chip or shaved off. I’m impressed how well it is giving the age. I will have to pull them apart to closely examine it. @Av8ferg thanks for the link. Hopefully I can find some fast. thanks
  18. Thanks gentlemen. It happened when I was 17 miles away from home. Thanks God I was able to get home without riding on top of a tow truck. the hunt for the parts begin! will keep the thread updated in my quest regards
  19. Yep, ouch is understatement 😉 it cleanly exploded toward the front engine. The giant bearing has some play as well as the bottom bearing. look like I’ll have to create a gear puller as those gears are quite deep. finding a replacement parts are the pain as well. Have anyone use jp-car parts.com? Seem like they have some used ones for sale
  20. Well, I pull it off last night… all the gears seem to be in good condition. No chip or damage to the gears. As suspected , the synchronizer hub is destroyed. More debris found in the casing been searching for replacement part but seem like if any available, it will be from a donor. Any one has spare and is selling, please let me know. Also, will the 4 speed work ?
  21. The broken part look like #5. Synchronizer hub From Dave WM. Second post
  22. I've been scouting the internet and seem like this part is no longer available. Need a donor.
  23. Examine a bit closer, the 2 pieces might me just 1 of the 3 pieces. It should look like this.
  24. Curious, the 2 pieces broke off, how come I can still able to shift smoothly from gear to gear?
  25. I've never seen the internal transmission before ... you probably right. Look like the hub-synchronizer for 2nd-3rd gear. I felt the "jolt" from stop light shifting from 1st gear to 2nd gear. It should be 3 pieces don't you think? maybe there is another one still inside the transmission? or perhaps already destroyed. https://www.carpartsmanual.com/datsun/810-1977-1980/power-train/manual-(5-speed)/transmission-gear/5-speed/45 what's the 5 speed transmission goes for these day?
