  1. That gasket isn’t correct for use with a header. It looks like an OEM gasket with a sandwich of metal and fiber. The header gasket is all fiber, with no metal embedded in it.
  2. You should leave the trans crossmember in place to support the transmission/engine assembly until it is supported by the crane. That is a lot of leverage on the motor mounts and the crossmember. Have all the bolts loose, ready to go, then when it is all supported by the crane, take them out and proceed with the extraction.
  3. What does the journal look like? If I found a bearing that looked like that, I would pull all the caps off and have a look at them all.
  4. I’ve always found heat to make removing stubborn bolts or studs from cast iron much easier. And if a bolt or stud breaks off flush (on cast iron) I learned how to heat it up cherry red with a cutting torch (using just the flame), and blow it out using the cutting function of the torch. Works a treat, leaving the threads intact in the cast iron manifold, ready to chase with a tap and install a new fastener.
  5. Here is a shot of the right side on my 72. All original, complete with a small pucker where the guy spot welding the panels screwed up. The rear panel sits on top of the side panel.
  6. The raised area is the weld between the flange and the tube. It gets machined flat and true when Newton aid in sealing when the intake and exhaust are installed. A quick cleanup with a large flat file is a good idea before reassembly. Careful to not cut them out of true or damage them.
  7. Don’t know yet, I still need to mount and balance them. Oh, then there is all the other pesky stuff. Like a fresh engine. New Stainless brake and fuel lines. Refurb the fuel tank, and replace all the fuel hoses with ethanol compatible hose. And a few other minute details. OK, a lot of other minute details.
  8. A 3/4” impact gun on a Datsun Z? Uf da!
  9. Pretty much, eh? Pretty versatile, like the Norwegian “uf da!” And I’m gonna use it in my next post so av8ferg doesn’t think we’re hijacking his engine swap thread, eh? It always sounds like, “Y’all ain’t fum aroun’ heah, are yew? I didn’t find people in the South any more or less disagreeable than any other part of North America, including the six Canadian provinces I’ve visited and worked in. eh?
  10. I’ve lived an hour and a half drive from Canada since 1970. Going to Canada is like driving across town. Been there so many times I lost count. When I turned 18 the drinking age up there was 18 so we would drive up Friday after work and spend the weekend bar hopping and sleeping in my friend’s van. Always came home speaking “Canadian”. That’s what its all aboot, eh? Spent lots of dolers on beer. When I was in Roanoke, Virginia a guy there accused me of being Canadian, said I had an accent. So, yeah, I speak Canadian, eh?
  11. There is a guy on Ratsun who has made a few custom steering wheels using wood for the rim. https://ratsun.net/topic/78921-diy-steering-wheels/?tab=comments#comment-1700673
  12. I was a journeyman mechanic for 30 years, and a state certified diesel and gas emissions specialist (among many other certifications). I’ve probably forgotten more than the average shade tree mechanic knows. I am interested to see how California is going to get by without internal combustion engines. Agriculture is the state’s largest industry, with plenty of tractors and trucks. Then there is the trucking industry, and no manufacturer is currently producing all electric long haul trucks. Locomotives are another one that is going to be difficult to replace with pure electric. I wonder if anyone has worked out how they will be able to generate and distribute enough electricity to run all the cars, trucks, buses and trains. Oh, and as far as I know, no one is trying to work out how to make commercial airliners and cargo plane work reliably and safely on batteries.
  13. Emissions regulations eliminated open crankcases way back in the late 1970s. Since then all engines reingest the crankcase vapors to be burned with the fuel/air mixture.
  14. I was thinking round numbers, like 10.
  15. Dusty Hill May 19, 1949 July 28, 2021 Rest In Peace.
  16. Nice longboard. Have you ever tried the street luge? A buddy modified a couple of longboards and we ran down a long, twisty road near his house. Most enjoyable.
  17. Our generation invented skateboards. The next generation perfected them. The generation has made a career of skateboarding.
  18. I believe there is a locating pin on the later ones that isn’t on the earlier Zs.
  19. Got the gas tank out of the 72 yesterday. Looks real good inside, only a tiny bit of surface rust inside, the outside is covered in a thick layer of undercoating. Now for cleaning and preparing for reinstalling.
  20. The wheels I ordered several months ago finally arrived. So now I can mount the tires I bought last winter. Can't wait to get them mounted and on the car.
  21. That pan has the sump all the way to the rear. I have about 15 L series engines, L24 and L28, all removed from Z cars, all have the sump towards the middle, with the drain at the rear center.
