  1. I might have asked before, what airplane do you fly?
  2. I interpolated that it was part of a garage door mechanism from your post. Saved me from doing what you did.
  3. An ingenious idea. Although in all the years I’ve worked on vehicles and machinery repairing hydraulic systems, I have always been able to get stripped flare nuts off, no matter how stripped or corroded in place. I have used vice grips, cold chisels, a flat file to file the nut into a useable shape again, or when all else fails, cut the tubing, remove the part and drill out the nut.
  4. Racer X

    Deburring Tool

We use these at The Big Shed for hole deburring and chamfering. We call is a rosebud.
  5. Depends on how big you roll them.
  6. It sold in 2016 for $560,000. Today it is already close to that. Will it reach, or come close to a million?
  7. $850,000. I’m a bit disappointed, figured I would at least get over one million.
  8. So where are the canon plugs and nomex thread cable ties? 😉 Nice work Ferg. You’re going to have a car to be proud of when you’re finished.
  9. After the radiator upgrade, did you make sure the cooling system was fully filled before driving the car? After this last drive when the engine began running oddly, did you pull the spark plugs? As already mentioned, used plugs tell a story. Since the engine still starts and runs, does it make any odd noises? Even though the temperature gage doesn’t work, you can still get an idea of how “hot” it is getting, put your hand on the thermostat housing, upper and lower radiator hoses, the heater hoses, and the upper radiator tank. If it is too hot to hold your hand on it, it is running too hot. Otherwise, overheating may not be the issue. It would also be a good idea to use a cooling system pressure tester. Pressurizing the system will immediately show any leaks. I can’t tell by the picture you posted where the coolant is leaking from, so try and get some better pictures to post. All we can see is a wet spot on the crossmember. Also, it looks like the hoses are original. When you changed out the radiator, it would have been a good idea to replace all the hoses. You mentioned the weather has been poor, do you not park the car inside? Working on any car outdoors sucks, and these cars need to be kept inside anyway.
  10. Safari, on my phone, has sized them to fit, so no worries eh?
  11. Another in my neck of the woods. I may have even raced against this car a time or three. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1971-datsun-240z-196/
  12. Less than ten hours to go and it is idling along at $28,000. Will there be a mad rush at the last minute? Will it make the reserve? https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1970-datsun-240z-76/
  13. Wow Cliff, two job changes in one month. Whew! The key is happiness though. I’ve been fortunate that most of the work I have done has always been work I enjoy, and mostly long term. I worked 30 years at an electric utility, maintaining and repairing the fleet. I served a 4 year state indentured apprenticeship to become a journeyman mechanic. It was like auto shop everyday. But after 30 years I grew weary of the management, wasn’t sleeping, and pissed off most of the time. I still enjoyed the work, but disliked the people I worked for. So I “retired”. After bouncing around in the private sector and not liking it much, I put my CDL to work and got a job pulling flatbed trailers loaded with airplane parts all over the US and Canada. Five years and over 800,000 miles later I moved on, to a job as an aerospace machinist. Now after seven and a half years at The Big Shed building 777 300ER/777 freighters, then 767 freighters /KC46 tankers, I am planning my exit to permanent retirement. Then I can spend everyday in my shop, working on my Z collection.
  14. I've been watching the Zs going to auction, and selling on eBay an Craigslist for a little over a year now. When I got sent home for Covid quarrantine last year I spent the time catching up on the Z scene. The dramatic increase in value of these cars astounds me. I have a small collection of S30s, mostly parts cars that were free of very cheap, and guys are pestering me to sell them one or two for crazy money, $5,000 to $10,000. For an duster incomplete rusted shell. It is fascinating to watch the final bid results, and see the fluctuations. Also of note are the cars that come up a second or third time, and either sell for about the same, or less than previously. Also interesting to see a car that is clearly in need of major work go for cubic dollars, and one that is a good to very good condition original fail to meet reserve.
  15. It lets me browse the profile, but pesters me at every turn to log in or create an account. No.
  16. Who needs a website anymore? Me. I'm not on Faceplant. The place is, and almost always has been, a very toxic environment. Too much drama. And it appears Zuckerberg and company are on the hot seat again. Won't be long and the house of Faceplant will crumble. Or not. When you wield the kind of monetary clout that Zuckerberg does, not much can stand in your way. A web presence rocks. Access via a laptop or even better, a desktop with a 27" monitor. My old eyes can't abide those little phone screens. Even with glasses.
  17. “This Datsun has a cam in it” Um, it ain’t a rotary engine, so I hope it has something to push the valves open.
  18. I unshroud the valves on all the L series engines I build. When I get home I’ll take a picture and post it here. I use a hard roll on a die grinder to cut the relief. I take it down to just above the mark where the piston ring stops traveling upwards, and out to the mark on the cylinder block deck where the head gasket opening is.
  19. Replacing a fusible link with a piece of regular wire is a bad idea, because the wire won’t react to a short circuit like the fusible link, and the wire will heat up and cause a fire. If the correct amperage of fuse is used I’m not sure why it couldn’t be used. Perhaps someone else here knows and will chime in. As for expensive ready made fusible links, NAPA should have fusible link in bulk, and you could possibly make your own a bit cheaper. Have a safe flight home.
  20. HLS3007823 just listed. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1970-datsun-240z-76/
  21. What do they get for one of those, and how long did it take to ship?
