Installing a 123 Distributor to fix a problem.
AK260 replied to youztheclue's topic in Engine & Drivetrain
My advice based on wasting a lot of money is buy the 123 and have done with it!! My 280zx dizzy works perfectly well for the average engine but as with all 40 something year olds it has wear in the shaft and bushings. I bought new bushings but the shaft is worn, so unless you can lathe it down and ream some bushes to the correct size it will always wobble. The issue with wobble is spark scatter at high revs. But if performance is not the concern then that’s OK for most. Bought a Rockauto reman one for a vast expense once delivered to the UK and it too had the same problem. Then I bought the 123 and at first I was less impressed than I should have been with it. However, over time, it’s REALLY grown on me and I love it. The Beru caps caused issues but the Bosch one has been fine. Here’s my thread on my experiences with it, in case it helps with your thinking ... https://zclub.net/community/index.php?threads/123-ignition-for-datsun-l6-on-my-l28.25467/ -
That MSA header and pipe / muffler combination on my old L26 made one of the best sounds I’ve ever heard on a car - in fact it sold me the car!!!! It also made a superb power band / flat torque curve .... I would caution you about the eBay copy as there have been many reports of problems with the flange not being thick enough and the fit under the car being too low. Having said that, I did manage to catch my MSA one on a few speed humps (but my car is probably lowered by an inch.

Those are very impressive flares! [emoji106][emoji106][emoji106] That tool is worth every Penny !

I echo Steve’s comment on living dangerously without rubbers! My Harrington rubber corners died all too quickly! Having said that, Harrington were very quick to respond and replace them. But if I did it again I would definitely go without the rubber corners.

Glad to be of service sir! 😉 Wait until the next one, I have some ideas that will either make me look like a complete c@ck or be funny! Amen! So true!! [emoji106][emoji106]

Sorry about that ! :p Just think of the Street as a Classic with the volume turned down and virtually invisible on the cruise / part throttle. I forgot to mention, my car does have a healthy covering of Silent Coat 4mm MLV sound deadening. So it’s probably quieter than most. But equally, the very low bass frequencies will still get through MLV. Especially those on that 2k-2.5k rev range.

Ps. Just uploaded the Street Muffler - the last one of the series. Please forgive the shaky video halfway through. The camera mount broke off, but at least the sound is all there! [emoji20]

Thanks Kully! You're most welcome, glad my clowning about has some value - although I did have a lotta fun! 😉 Not a straight pipe - I did indeed have the centre resonator that comes with the Race / Sport system.

Nice work! Manual 260z in the UK I believe started out with R200 3.7 and then went to a 3.54 in the last couple of years (77-78). Happy to be corrected. 280zx used R200 3.9 for NA manual and I think 3.7 for turbo. My 3.9 R200 came from an Arizona manual ‘84 280zx.

I put these on mine and it sorted all kinds of steering issues under braking - especially the judder and wonder. It introduced zero discernible harshness. You won’t look back.

I'm sure the longitudinal differences will make it sound completely different :P Will get you some photos tomorrow - the heavens have opened up here and Noah will be sailing past at any moment!! 😞 Thank you sir. Appreciate the kind words. The thing I like about it is that no one box is perfect for everyone - they each have their own characters and suit different needs. I really like that muscle car sound. On the old L26 with the MSA header and no resonator 2.5" pipe, it was just the PERFECT sound that had me at hello. Once the car fired up, there was NO WAY I wasn't going to buy it! I may have ended up with a better car if I had taken my time more, but the sound was just so grin inducing, I regressed to being a 4 year old with a car that went broooom! Sean is more than welcomed to - I'm not precious about them. Although he may want something more professionally done. A good question which I didn't address in the video - the car has the Race / Sport header, it's pipes and the Z story centre resonator that comes with the full package (which if memory serves is 18" long?).
-
Oh I hear you! The resonator does kill the sound a fair bit and it was great without it on my L26. But the more aggressive cam and cam timing on the L28 with it’s bigger displacement on 10.5:1 just introduced too much drone for my Lilly soft ears! Glad the musings of a madman had some value! [emoji106]Hope you get the car is back to roaring away again soon!

To duplicate a post I made earlier on the UK site, I’ve been having a bit of fun doing back to back tests and learning about making YouTube videos - my kids want their own Minecraft channels, so I’m trying to learn with my version, I call it Zcraft! 😄 Ever wondered what an exhaust system would sound like on your car with different mufflers? I personally found that the internet was full small clips but very little in the way of back to back comparisons on the same car. Well, purely for your benefit, I sacrificed myself!!!! I will splice parts of these together one day when I get more time, so that the same bit is played back to back on one video. 1. Thrush / Dynamax 17715 Turbo Muffler (I had some SERIOUS hay-fever that day so forgive my lifeless voice). 2. Zstory Classic Muffler (forgive the jibe at you left-hookers) [ 3. Zstory JDM Muffler (forgive my boyish squeaking) 4. Zstory Street Muffler (forgive the camera mount that broke halfway through the clip). Let me know what you think and I hope it's helpful / fun. (To be very clear, I have no affiliation with Zstory nor is this commercial in anyway - it's just me having a bit of fun and sharing it with fellow enthusiasts!)

This is the one I used and it’s been great - admittedly with covid I’ve done fewer miles than usual but it gets used nearly daily as I pull the car out of the garage to get to stuff. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DATSUN-FAIRLADY-260Z-280Z-PARKING-HAND-BRAKE-CABLE-EMERGENCY-/151459145571

That’s a great price and a good fit! [emoji106][emoji106] I bought mine about 4 years ago (Vanssi brand off Alibaba) and I’ve not looked back! It’s transformed my night time driving even at 6000lmn per set but unlike the one you have listed - which use 3.7A for the pair - mine use about 4.5 a pair.
-
As Mark says, just do it! You’re not going to solve it any other way.

When I studied in Leicester, it was known as “Babe-ingham” - we used to take the coach there on a Friday night to go clubbing for exactly the reasons you described! ;) Glad you had a good time there! You’ve been super lucky with the weather too!

Such a shame, Notts is a fair way away from me. But if you are ever in LGW, LHR, LTN, STN or LCY, be sure to look me up!

Ah! I had no idea about this cleaning it off business and put mine together as is - a few thousand miles later and no clutch slip yet!! Fingers crossed [emoji848][emoji1696] Ps. LOVING the orange Z@Wally !!!! Orange Zs are 23.6% cooler than the rest! [emoji106]

In that case we shall follow your floaters with interest! :p

I’m certain you would have considered this but is there any way of adding mass to them? For example a small self tapping screw at the very top? Or if not enough, making the hole slightly larger and adding lead shot, then sealing up with a bung, screw or silicone sealant?
-
I like the wood turning idea!!! For mine I ended up using a selection of sockets, paint pots and pulleys. Not ideal as you could easily flatten the pipe on the bend not to mention hard work to make these shapes ... @240z70 - good luck chap! Keep us posted!

I agree with grannyknot, when I read your post my first reaction was air in the system. When I replaced all but one of my brake lines last year, I had this exact problem. It kept coming back too as there was the tiniest weep in two of the connections that simply needed tightening up a fraction more. Use white kitchen towel / tissue to check the lowest point of each pipe to ensure you don’t have a tiny leak somewhere. Lastly, I stopped using the pumping the fluid back into the reservoir method as I found it was introducing very small air bubbles back into the reservoir. These days I just pump it into another container. Ps. I just discovered this tool at the weekend. If I did it again, I would buy one of these.
