I hate to admit it, but you guys are probably right. Any reason to go with the motorsport auto metal gasket for $200 or just do the regular gasket?

Thanks for the reply. I've had the engine 25 years, 20 years pretty much in storage. Got it road worthy a year ago. It overheated on a hot day a few weeks ago. Today, I noticed steam coming from the valve cover vent and checked the oil. It was milky brown when running. I drained it. Looked like watery oil. Not much water to speak of, but some. Its garaged, so I'm not sure that any water could come from an outside source. It's such a big project to do the gasket, I was just wondering if there could be another source. Like a leaky water pump or something easier. Probably wishful thinking.

1972 240Z, L28 engine and head. Looks like I've got water in my oil. Before I rip into the top end, is there any other source for water in the pan other than a blown head gasket? I appreciate any advice. Thank you.

  6. I have a '72 240 with a 280 block and the original head, carbs and distributer. It used to have smog equipment but, with the help and advice from this forum, it has all been removed with the exception of the anti-backfire valve and pcv. The question is where do I set the timing? I think the 240 called for 10 degrees and the 280 17 degrees. Any help is appreciated. P.S. As a side note: I capped off the tube that took the exhaust back from the exhaust manifold and recirculated it. I plan to get headers eventually when the engine is rebuilt. However, for now can I cut those tubes exiting the manifold and bend them over the nut with a little hammer and chisel action or am I better offer leaving it in place. Thanks again!
  7. Thanks for all the great responses. I appreciate it.

  9. Thanks. The balance tube you offer looks clean. Do I have to worry about smog testing when I sell the car? I think I read somewhere that 1975 and older cars do not need smog tests. Is that your understanding?
  10. I want to ax the complete smog system on my 1972 240 (california car). Are there any articles, etc. on doing this? Are there any components that I should absolutely leave or do I just take it off and plug the holes? Any direction is appreciated. Thanks.

72' 240 with orig carbs. There is gas pouring from the rear carb float overflow. Took the float chamber cover off and the float seems to be closing the valve. What could it be? Thanks for any help you can give.
