Emergency @ Burger King
Unfortunately, children learn how to behave from watching their parents, so they will probably turn out the same way unless they are lucky to have another more rational role-model. I'm always amazed at what my kids come back with, months later, when I think they weren't listening to me, either good things or bad .

Rear speaker boxes
Well, you're correct. I just interpreted his "above the towers" to mean this. Maybe that was a bit of a stretch.

Rear speaker boxes
By the time you get to a '78 280Z, there are definately speakers in exactly the place that he describes. So maybe they transitioned to them as early as the 260. Or they could have had the body cutouts for them, and a PO installed them out of a 280 or something. There are many things that were "prepared for" with minor body changes that didn't actually happen until later... Just FYI.

Splash Pans
Here's the belly pan installed on my '78 280Z (original - wirebrushed and repainted) after my suspension rebuild. You can see the big cutout for the radiator drain that doesn't appear to be in the 240Z pans.

What is Rice?
1) Huge rear spoilers on tiny underpowered cars. 2) Fart can mufflers with 3" outlets on tiny underpowered cars. I've seen body kits that I'd call "rice", but many of them are in the eye-of-the-beholder, so I won't include that as a category. But I've NEVER seen any version of the 2 points above that I thought was "not-rice".

Questions about A/C on 280z
I'm not 100% sure anymore! I'll have to see if I can find the VIN for the no-longer living one. If nothing else, I still have the dash around here somewhere... I THINK it was 4000 lower than my current one.

Questions about A/C on 280z
I had a '78 280Z federal car that had factory air in it that I parted out. My current '78 280Z (california car) has an aftermarket AC. The VIN numbers were about 4000 different. The aftermarket version still works .

Fun Copter
684 before I gave up. Don't ask me to be a pilot any time soon... And Will, there is some stray junk after the .swf extension. Just edit it out in your browser line.

Hello from Illinois
Nope, not me! I haven't seen that one. I have a "copper" (brown) '78 280Z that I bought in October 2004. I also have a silver '70 240Z that I bought in March 2003, but that one's in many pieces, and hasn't really been driven by me in Champaign. It sat for a couple of years off University Avenue on the west side before I chanced upon it. I've seen a dark red 280Z around, and once, a georgeous scarlet 240Z that I have not been able to track down. Several 280ZX's and 300ZX's too (both Z31 and Z32). I work on campus myself (www.csar.uiuc.edu ), but haven't seen any early Z's there other than mine. A really nice Z31 was parked on Wright street the other day beside Talbot lab .

Hello from Illinois
Hey rockymtnhigh39, welcome to classicz. Are you a Chicago-area or down-state Illinois resident? I haven't found anyone local to me yet.

Front Control Arm - Nut/Bolt Head Sizes for a 240z?
Which bolts on the front control arms? Webdawg is right that up through 17 will do you for most/all of it - but I can't remember what the big pivot bolt nut size is where the control arm mounts to the crossmember. It may be 19mm. It is either 17 or 19. There aren't too many things bigger than 17mm on a Z, but there are a few. Generally, 10, 12, 14, and 17 will do you, with an occasional 19.

Ebrake release...love that rust
According to the service manuals on both my 1978 280Z and my 1970 240Z, the jack point isn't the front of the differential - it is the case itself. See the attached image. I have jacked my 280Z many times from that point, and it has never failed me yet! Also, you could, if it is the pads rusted to the drum, just put the car in gear and try to back up after releaseing the cable. I've "broken loose" drums like that. It may not do the pads any good though. And I would be very tentative with the accelerator, so that you don't go screeching away if it breaks loose. Good luck.

280zx tranny in 70 240z
That'd be great! Let me know if he has one. If he does, PM me and I'll give you my contact info to give him. I dropped my WCZC membership last year since I never had time to make it to a single meeting or event. The 2.5 hour one way drive just made it too much to schedule around. Maybe in a couple of years when the kids are about gone...

280zx tranny in 70 240z
Ah, then I'll have to just get lucky, I guess. Right now I don't have much time to pay attention to the Z... Thanks. Mark

280zx tranny in 70 240z
Hey Marty, where did you get the tranny? I haven't put any time into looking for one, but I'd like to put a late 280ZX trans in my 280Z to match up with the 3.9 diff I have in it now. No yards around here have ever heard of a Z-car... Thanks. Mark

Sport Z Mag. Closing Down
While I loved the magazine, and hope that the new one has something useful to offer the Z-car crowd (I too have no interest in current "general" Nissan stuff), I have to admit that this is the last time I will buy long term subscriptions to any magazine. I never do it for "normal" magazines, but I wanted to support SportZ. Including sinking an extra chunk into first-class postage just a few months ago, since the covers on mine kept getting damaged. The people at SportZ were great - always helpful. But this is the kind of unfortunate occurrence that makes people shy away from making long-term commitments.

production number for 1969
I sure hope kats works out the "delicacy" of his information. I would love to see it! Zedrally - where did 1968 come into the picture? kats mentions May 1969...

Not passing smog. Suggestions appreciated
\A '78 280Z does not have an O2 sensor. They were introduced with the 280ZX. (I have a '78 280 - california version with CAT, and no O2 sensor).

Car Show in Albuquerque Today
I'm in Albuquerque, NM on business this week, and I lucked into a car show today! I was walking around "old town", when I caught a Z shape out of the corner of my eye. Walking toward it, I saw several other Z's! When I finally got close enough, I found two huge parking lots of cool cars! There were only two "classic" Z's - a red 1974 260Z that looked pretty good from 10 feet, and a blue 1976 280Z that was pretty sharp all around. Also a 1970 Datsun 2000 roadster that was really nice. Anyone know Charlie Banks? There were also a couple of 280ZXs, one Z31, and two Z32s. The NM desert certainly keeps cars nice. Everything from the normal Corvettes and Mustangs, to Alfa's, Packards, VW's, Corvairs, and other assorted interesting stuff...even had a really nice old Rolls Royce. One thing that surprised me is that I don't believe I saw a single Porsche. Wish I had had my camera

Depressing turn of events...
So do pic 'N pulls up there toward Chicago still have Z's in the yards? Around here, they just laugh at you... If you can verify that the car is there, I may take a trip up - 2 hours North of Champaign is past I-80 into the Chicago burbs - what down is the yard in? edit <Oh - I didn't read. You said "summit", which I've never heard of - time to google!> Thanks!

Depressing turn of events...
I always ask by part number. The Nissan Parts counter guys here in Champaign love me, since I always walk in with printouts of the fiche pages showing exactly the part and part numbers I want. They can then easily look up the superseded numbers. So that is what I did with the hood, with a negative result. Maybe there are other ways to search that they don't know about, but they've found some interesting stuff for me...
