  1. Boat storage places wrap boats. My brother does his every year for winter storage. Might be a good option but you won’t be able to get in or out of the car and that will be a problem for the trucking company. They typically want a operational car that can driven on and off the ramps. Unless you car is a contours vehicle I wouldn’t worry about it. It will be fine. A few days in the weather won’t hurt it. Sometimes the medication can be worse than the disease. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  2. Wear goggles [emoji41] and some old clothes because you will get soaked and dirty when the high pressure water hits all the angles on the casing. It’s a messy business. Thank god most of that work in behind me. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. This is my transmission porn, Cliffs looks great in natural aluminum. I used purple power, pressure washers and a wire brush. Then painted with Cast Iron color engine paint. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. Thanks ZedHead, I appreciate the information! Maybe I’ll get them in today but will be headed to work soon…so more she’ll be sitting again. I think I predicted this would take 6 weeks to complete…I’m on target. I still have to install the new rear springs and shocks back there..(let’s add 2 week for that). life happens [emoji38] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. This guy has a couple 5 speeds for sale near you. 818 298-2549 text only https://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/pts/d/datsun-240z-280z-280zx-parts/7473103638.html Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  6. Can anyone provide conformation that the half shafts are different lengths on a R200 stock set up. I recall reading that the drivers side needed to be slightly shorter. When fully extended one of mine is .5” shorter so I’m guessing that’s the drivers side.
  7. I wouldn’t wish this job on my worst enemy. It is very challenging to put this differential in alone. It weight upwards of 80lbs I’d guess and holding things in position while trying to get bolts in and tightened is no easy task. I really hope I like this 3.7 differential because it will take a lot to send me back in there.
  8. So, the link sent by ZedHead shows a setup like first FSM drawing. That 1977 Zapp car has a 4 speed and what appears to be a R180. Could this be the difference? Right now I’m installed like drawing 2 & 3 and how it came off the car. This pic below is from the Bat car. You can clearly see the loops on the bar is facing rearward.
  9. I agree with you, but clearly the first drawing shows it the opposite direction. Maybe R180s use less space so it could go the other way??? I did have a lot of umbrella drinks on vacation so if this is the only bad outcome, I can live with that!!!
  10. Okay, I need an assist. Got the bushings installed on my mustache bar. Now I’m confused after 4 weeks which way it goes back on. I went to the FSM and there is a discrepancy in that publication showing 2 different install directions. Looking from the back to from the loops (with the bushings) face forward or aft . I thought forward and then found two diagrams in the FSM that conflict which each other? This determines if the bar goes in front or behind the rectangular brackets hanging. See the attached diagrams from FSM. First shows mustache bar behind brackets and loops facing the back of car. Last two pics show the exact opposite. Am I missing something here? I can’t be the fist guy confused here? It came off as in last two pics but recall mine wasn’t seated properly either so I think a PO was messing down here before.
  11. The worst it the medical experts that read a couple articles on WebMD of Fakebook and all a sudden they act like a board certified physician.
  12. If I were selling a car I do t think I’d use BaT. While there are some great comments helping potential buyers there are just as many trolls on there. There are people that make comments that are just not true (sign of the times) damaging the potential sale. This site suffers the pitfalls of many social media sites. What’s true and what’s false?
  13. Keep looking, at think you’ll find one at a better price. I have access to 4 yards near me. They all want $425-$475. Two are close and two are wide. After reading your thread I might just grab one for my war time stock like [emoji23]. Call this yard in LA. They have an 83 ZX transmission. All Japanese Auto Wrecking 323-581-0500 Good luck!
  14. I grew up in the SF Bay Area and left after my first year in college. It became financially untenable to live there anymore. Arguably the most beautiful state in the country in my opinion but that weather and landscape comes at a considerable cost to personal prosperity. I used to buy regular gas at Arcp in San Mateo for .98 a gallon in 1987 for my 1966 VW. Now it’s upwards of $6 there. We are paying about $3.67 in NC. Non-Ethanol 93 octane gas is about $4.29. 15. Good post Jim. I’ve watched that guy before, he makes some interesting videos. I’m lucky too. Lots of non-ethanol options where I live from 89-93 octane. When I store gas for hurricane season I always store the non-ethanol fuel. I store about 20 gals (use stabilizer) and then burn it in my truck when the season ends. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  16. I need to find this TV series you all are talking about. I found this article, that discusses the problem E85 has with older cars. Talks about why you need to make some changes when / before using E85 on classic cars and what consequences are. Carbureted cars seem most at risk, but the the hydroscopic properties of ethanol may effect seals and gaskets on all cars built before mid 80’’s https://driving.ca/auto-news/news/higher-ethanol-fuel-and-classic-cars-dont-mix
  17. Way to go Dan, looks great!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  18. I use ethanol free gas too . I’m lucky we have 93 available. I’m not sure what my CR is after shaving my head .020” with flat top pistons on a P79 and I’m using higher octane just to make sure I don’t get pre detonation, probably don’t need it but maybe one day I’ll try the 89. I have had problems with my power washer and generator when using ethanol gas. As long as I ran it empty it was fine but if I left fuel in the carbs for extended time, they struggled to start. Not sure if it leaves a residue or why but now I always cut off the fuel and let it starve. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  19. I am aware these are not the same thing. I was making a general comment of how additives and fuels have changed over the years. We use to add lead, engines were built to use lead back then, then we phased that out for environmental reasons. and Later we began adding ethanol for a different reason but our engines haven’t changed. 20. I never made a political comment or suggestion it was red or blue issue. Where do you see that in my post? I just said it was an article about adding up to 15% ethanol. I’m actually curious about the effect of ethanol on older engines. Why are you suggesting I’m making a political statement? I honestly don’t care to discuss politics. I think it’s an interesting topic. The vast majority of people know nothing about fuel what am octane number really means or why places in the mountains having lower octane ratings. I find it generally interesting and really want to know how these modern fuels work with older cars. The political side of this is a totally different discussion that has no interest to me. Sounds like it interests you?
  21. So, I wanted to bring up this topic to get a better understanding of the gasoline these L24-L28 engines were designed for. It is my understanding that modern cars today are able to burn various blends of gasoline and ethanol. Older cars are not as well suited. I believe it is a combination of metals used in valves and such and the ability for modern cars to adjust timing to compensate for fuel differences. I’m not sure when regular gas went away but I think it was in the mid to early 90’s. I had a 66 VW in college in 1990 and could find regular gas everywhere. Then I recall later having to buy lead additives when I still had that car in 2001. It was stolen in 2001, but that’s a different story. So what fuel were are our Zs designed to use and should we use non-ethanol gas. This came to mind this morning when reading an article where Biden is going to implement 15% ethanol additive to all summer gasoline. I’ve been able to buy non-ethanol gas where I live because there is a lot of boating here and that’s the preferred fuel for boat engines. I know ethanol attracts water and is harder in seal etc . I know mileage is reduced because ethanol have less energy in a gallon than gasoline. If have to go back to High School chemistry but I believe gasoline is 12 chain carbon and ethanol a 4 chain. More carbon chains equates to more potential energy during combustion. https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/policy/biden-to-reinstate-15-ethanol-gasoline-for-summer-claiming-cost-savings?utm_source=msn&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=msn_feed Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  22. With you being in the Ca, you should be able to find a transmission pretty easy. I just looked on CL and there are two on there. A rebuild ZX 5 speed and another 4 speed. I think he asking too much for the 5 speed but maybe you could negotiate a better deal. Looks like it’s close to you. https://ventura.craigslist.org/pts/d/ventura-datsun-280z-280zx-rebuilt-close/7467706265.html
  23. It’s not that difficult to find a 5 speed in a junkyard. Go to Car-part.com and do a search. They usually have the parts graded so you have an idea the condition. I got my for $400 and it’s it great condition. I just looked and they’re some out there but prices have gone up . Now they’re in the $500+ range. Inflation has even hit the junkyards. I can’t believe how expensive things are getting and how fast. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  24. Dan, thanks. I hit those shafts with my power washer to knock of all the caked on grime. It was thick and struck in every crevice! I then metal etched the shafts and then painted them. Those l boots are not new, just cleaned them up . No cracks or dry rot there so I imagine they’re not so old. I put all my nuts and bolts in a shaker to clean them up also. 25. Work stoppage for parts. Waiting on my mustache bar bushings. Scheduled for a Monday delivery. Wanted all this in before end of next Monday. I leave for work on Tuesday and the won’t be able to touch the car for about 3 weeks. I really wanted it back on its wheels. Everything is ready to put in.
