I called the guy from the dbelectrical link and he said yes they’re new based on the hitachi specs and design. 1 yr warranty might be a good option but will keep looking and see what else. is out there.

California Datsun sells “new” not rebuilt starters for $200. Anyone every get one of his? https://www.californiadatsun.com/starters/datsun-z-240z-280zx-510-heavy-duty-reduction-starter.html

I just spoke to a company that rebuild my Hitachi Alternator and they also do starters and he said AC Delco is junk now because they don’t build anymore all their stuff is farmed out to the lowest bidder. The American way! He wants $150 to rebuild it

Almost got stranded yesterday with a starter failure. Was able to bang on it with a hammer and get another start of of it. I’d just get one “click” when I turned the key. This is a remanufactured (AC Delco -premium) gear reduction starter. I love when they put crap like “premium” in the description….lies lies lies! I bought it on Rock Auto 27 months ago and as expected the warranty expired 3 months ago. With a little I drove this car it might have 100 -200 starts on it. This is the world we live in where stuff appears to break right after the warranty period as if they know this when the rebuild. My Toyota (OEM Denso) starter on my 08’ 4Runner is the original one and is 16 years old and have I bet it has 5000 starts on it. Are these days over where they make good stuff? Looking to replace it Anyone have know where the best place to get a replacement that isn’t made in. Chinese sweat shop. Who is a reputable reman company?

Hey I have a few questions about the rear Hatch Struts. I’ve read a few previous posts on the topic but I’m not 100% clear on the topic. So is the rear hatch supposed to open by itself all the way once you push the release button? Or do you have to assist it a few inches before it opens all the way up? My rear hatch won’t open by itself, I have to assist it pretty much all the way. Now it holds open no problem and requires mild effort to close it. At the last 3-4” when closing it will not hold, it basically free falls the last 3 inches. So is this how it’s supposed to work? I was thinking maybe new struts might be in order. Now if they need to be replaced is there a preference to the new strut of choice? I saw a post by Grannyknot from 2017 about his replacement but I think he’s got a 240z. I thought they used only one strut on the 240z. His part number on the link is different than the part number when I put 280z in that website search bar. His was 90 lbs of forces while the 280z one said 44 lbs each. I also see all sorts of options when doing a basic Google search but you never know what you’re getting going this route, Are there are ones that pop right in Hoping someone has all this data so I can but the right ones the first time. Thanks

That’s funny and It’s true Bruce….except for laundry. There is no amount of training that will enable me to meet my wife’s laundry standards. It’s like quantum physics people claim they understand it but nobody really does.

Thanks Cliff, I've missed flying and I head back soon to do a short refresher course before I start flying a regular line. If I stay at home any more my wife is going to kill me. Funny thing, I forgot what the max start temperature is on the Pratt and Whitney Engines but I know that the UPC code for bananas at the grocery store is 4011. This means I've been out too long and getting overly domesticated.

Steve, I’ve recently met a local farmer who’s daughter is on the swim team with my son. He raises Waygu grass feed beef here locally and he sells me beautiful steaks for $15 a pound. Also grows organic tomatoes and peppers that are amazing. He sell most of his stuff to Whole Foods in Raleigh.

Most processed food seems has sugar or corn syrup in them. Companies do it because it tastes better and they get more sales. We consumers get what we ask for. Company are culpable though as quarterly sales trump ethical practices. This behavior is becoming an epidemic in our country. Profit before People. You have to read the label on all your foods. Our food industry is making us sick and big Pharma is waiting in the wings to make you a customer for life on one or more of their expensive medications. I do intermittent fasting. Don’t eat until about 11 am everyday and exercise in my fasted state. I cut most processed foods and avoid sugar at all costs. Our foods are nutrient deficient. We American’s are “overfed” but under “nourished”. Supplementation brought me back to feeling energized and healthy again. I cut most carbs not all and doubled my protein intake.

Gents, I wanted to get on here and let you all know briefly why I’ve been gone and that I’m back. I’ll keep it brief and if you want to more details send me a message. About 8-9 months ago I had a medical incident that was a wake up call for me. It ended up with my in the ER with a doctor standing over me with cardiac paddles telling me they’re going to have to smock me. My job is 100% contingent on my health. Shortly after I notified the company I was placed on medical hold, and have been in this status until recently. This medical event was a watershed moment for me and I spent some time reflecting on my lifestyle and then came up with a game plan. I determined it was time to “Reset my life”. I had to reevaluate all my actions that impact me and make changes. This medical event opened up a host of other boxes with the FAA drilling down into every medical aspect of me. I had many doctors visits, saw specialists and found I had some blood work items out of normal ranges too. I had to do a couple sleep studies and so on. It was painful! It didn’t help I ran into incompetent people along the way which made me realize how broken our medial system is. I can dive into that later but because of incompetence and financial incentives by secondary medical providers who were calling themselves “experts” I was going to have to do treatment I didn’t need or want, So I had to become my own advocate and spent countless hours researching and educating myself. I read several book by “real” experts and had great advice from friends who are physicians. I became a pseudo expert is some medical areas and with the actions I implemented I turned everything around, I’d go see my doctor and we’d discuss items that he really knew nothing about. I was shocked at how our medical system works and how it is incentivized. So what did I do to reset my life. I changed everything; my Diet, Exercise, Nutrition , Sleep, and Stress; it all had to be changed. Because I didn’t have time to figure out exactly what I needed to do I used the “cast a wide net approach”. Do it all and hopefully i fix these issues. This ultimately worked, it wasn’t easy. I had to be disciplined and methodical and I was. In this time, I’ve lost 24 pounds, ( I wasn’t really heavy to begin with), I exercise for 60-90 mins 5 days a week (running 15-20 miles a week), taking multiple vitamins and supplements, track my sleep and O2 saturation every night, and removed all stressful activities I can. I stopped drinking alcohol, removed all sugar from my diet, The second order effects are many. First I feel better than I did 10 years ago, I’m never tired, I have more mental clarity, I dropped my LDL cholesterol 70 pts without medication, blood work is now normal, I sleep great. I stopped working on my car during this time for the most part. I did a little here and there but it hasn’t had anything really done to it. I do drive it now and then. I had to refocus my life and that meant 100% commitment to the things I determined were more important after evaluating everything. The tenants were: Family, Faith, Friendships, Spiritual and Mental Heath and overall personal Wellness. Everything else was placed on hold. The bottoms line is this long post is I’m back, I’m better, I’m going back to work in 2 weeks. This event was a blessing in disguise. That’s my story!

I recently messed with my timing. its a L28 and when I checked it it was ay 15 Deg before TDC at 800 rpm. Ran great there, lots of torque between 3500-4500 RPM snd would flatten around 5000 RPM. I've been chasing a rich running engine so I thought I'd mess with the timing a bit. I adjusted it to 12 Deg and not the perforce has shifted greatly/. Noe the engine runs flat after about 3300 rpm. Less power, less torque. Your post makes me wonder if Im a tooth off too, but I put mine all together on a stand a was pretty sure it was spot on. Going to move the timing 1 deg between test drives. This is called the redneck Dino.

Yes, Joe in WI rebuilt both. He was super nice and did quality work. The heater core is an aftermarket one I got on Amazon. Was $38 To rebuild my old one I was quoted $450 so no thanks. This heater core requires minor mods to the heater box. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000C7TTBM?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title The lines needed to be cut and swaged. Not sure if this kit would work. I had a good friend from the forum so it for me. https://www.amazon.com/Copper-Swaging-Tool-Expander-Conditioner/dp/B0BGDV2WRL/ref=mp_s_a_1_10_sspa?keywords=swaging+tool&qid=1685735219&sr=8-10-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExU0dDUUdIVDMxVDRFJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMjgwNDUwMkE3TTdZMUs2UVJFTCZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNTc4NjM4MUlFQTBDTjFOSzVYMyZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX3Bob25lX3NlYXJjaF9tdGYmYWN0aW9uPWNsaWNrUmVkaXJlY3QmZG9Ob3RMb2dDbGljaz10cnVl As far as CaptainObvious’ link, I’ll need to search that when on a computer, on my phone right now.

Go to page 18 on this link. I discuss all my issues with my 1977 HVAC stuff, including heater core modification (thanks CaptainObvious) and the Heater Control Valve refirb. It was a quick turnaround for this, maybe 7 days. I looked everywhere, you will not find an OEM heater core or control valve anywhere so don't bother, I spent hours looking. This was my only real option. http://www.heatervalves.net

We’ll never pass up a chance to tell the people in your life that you value them. My father told always tell your loved ones, you love them every chance you get because it might be your last. My good buddy Yarb has embraced this philosophy [emoji6] 2 weeks ago a friend of the family lost those 34 yr old son suddenly. Fell asleep at the wheel late at night, hit a tree and died instantly. Stay strong Cliff!

Cliff, sorry to hear about your loss and the added stress it has brought into your life. Life is a roller coaster and it’s a ride you can’t get off until it stops. Don’t worry we got plenty of guys around here to keep the lights on in the library whale you navigate the waters of life. Take care and we’re all here waiting for your speedy return.

Thanks SteveJ! I’ll get to work on that. I know on my 77 that the fuel pump should only be running when the engine is running or on start but it would be nice to have an alternate means of cutting the fuel if for whatever reason is this system fails, and to stop potential thieves. You gotta remember what I do for a living. We have triple redundant safety and operational systems on most areas of aircraft. Short story: When the F-35 engineers came out to the ship while we’re were doing operational flying (Harriers). We had hours of conversation with them about the new F-35 design (this was 2003 timeframe so early in design stage). They had no plan to put a backup generator for emergency electrical power or an standby attitude gyro). The engineers comment when we quested those decisions was “you won’t need them because the primary generator, engine and Inertial Nav Sys will never fail.” The laughter in the room amongst the pilots was deafening. 20 years later the F-35 has all those redundant systems except it still has only one engine . The engine that was never going to fail has already led to several crashes of a $150 million aircraft. I love engineers but they aren’t the one that have to operate the machines they design. I already have the 78 fuel rail on my car because is used less hoses.

Hey guys, surfing the web today I stumbled on two different recent incidents where guys 280z’s caught on fire. This is almost never a concern on a new car but older cars have a much higher probability. I keep a fire extinguisher in my car for good reason but was wondering if a fuel cutoff switch would be a good idea. It could serve two purposes. Both an anti theft device and a way to shutdown fuel to the engine immediately if there was a secondary failure. Not sure if it worth it or not. Only found one post on the subject on the forum that was posted in 2007.

Get used to is. I always get comments or thumbs up when I drive mine. There much nostalgia with these vehicles. It’s odd there is much space inside the cabin compared to the overall size of the vehicle. Now that your got her on the road, what is your insurance game plan? I’m with USAA and they’re only covering $800 for the car so I’m moving to Hagerty’s. I’m told you can give them the value you want insured within reason and you’ll be covered. I’m going to put mine around 20k-25k just to be safe. It’s probably not worth that much but in three years with inflation we could see another 15% decline in our currency. Every day I’m shocked at prices when I buy things I haven’t bought in awhile. Many things are double what I paid just 2 years ago. Please stop the pain!

When I was younger I was naive on the nature of humans and have changed my view over the years. The world while full of great and generous people there are a lot of bad actors out there. It’s really really part of the nature of humanity, we are a competitive species with many bad traits that come out when our basket of goods is threatened. I’m reading the book The Peloponnesian War right now. The war occurred before Alexander The Great about 2500 years ago. You realize we cannot change our species, we have the same antics, same back stabbing, same ruthlessness today as we did then. We’ve progressed far technologically but we haven’t really changed who we are as a species. The goal for me is to fight these tendencies and always be the best human I can. The trolls like you saw in your post should be ignored and shunned, that’s all you can do…..pay it forward and do good!!

Well if this works I’ll follow suit because my car smells of exhaust in the cabin pretty bad . I’m sure I’m getting mild carbon monoxide poisoning to some degree. I do have an extra gas mask from when I was in the military maybe I can just drive around with that on the meantime [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]
-
Well thins might explain why I still have exhaust gasses in my cabin even after replacing bother seals. I think using silicone is a good idea and I don’t care what the next owner has to do since I plan on never removing them again. [emoji23]
-
Well I think I’ve sorted this out. Here’s what I did. - New spark plugs - valve lash check and adjust -move temp sensor to thermostat housing and replace. -oil change (needed anyway only I looked under valve cover) She’s running great again and not rich anymore. No more spitting black mist out the tailpipe.
-
Zed, thanks for the FSM ref. I put all the sensors in a pan of hot water with a thermometer in the water and heated the water to various temps on my stove (wife was at work [emoji6]). I will say the sensors react very rapidly to cooling. I wanted to get a baseline of the sensors before I put them in the car. I think I’m going to order a couple additional ZX sensors and see what I find.
