Welcome to forum. I don't think you'll get many smart arse comments on here and like was said earlier the people on the forum have a love for these cars and are motivated to help the community, so again welcome. I got on here about a year ago after buying a Z that I really had wanted for 20+ years. I asked plenty of stupid questions as I educated myself. Great people on this have guided me well on my path to restoring my car. My first question for you is, what motivated you to buy this car?..the answer will better lead people on here to what your original inspiration was. Capt Obvious had a great write up on the different paths people go with these cars when referring to a guy selling one in PA. I'll see if I can find it. Your intended usage will also be a driving factor. Daily Driver, Show Car, Weekender, Track Car and so on. You have a lot of work ahead of you, and it will require some endurance to see this through. Too many guys don't have the enduring motivation to see these project through properly. Recognize now that you are not Garage Monkey and will not be finished in 3 weeks or 3 months. These projects are sometimes a year or more into the making. I see your are already attacking the rust...the Achilles Heel of these cars. Another idea is to start a journal of your progress. I did this and its beneficial for several reasons. 1. After doing extensive research on topic but not being able act on it I was able to ensure I didn't have to do all the research again. E.g. What is a largest tire you can fit on a 280z and not rub the body without fender flares, and how will it impact steering and ride? I need tires but haven't bought them yet but I know when its time, exactly what I need because its in my journal. 2. It will help you troubleshoot your problems and finally recall things you have forgotten. My final piece of advice. Pictures pictures.....take more than you need before you disassemble something. Picture are free, so don't screw this up. Your memory will fail you I promise, especially if pulled a part off 3 months ago. Example, I dissembled my 77 fuel rail to clean it, and replace the rubber hose pieces. it sat for maybe 3 weeks apart and even with pictures I wasn't 100% confident I was putting it back together right. Without pics I would have been on this forum asking stupid questions again.
  3. What’s your plan with this car? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. CO...thanks. I can’t wait to try this techique out. I appreciate the offer to open the lock...might take you up on it. Having Thanksgiving at my Mom’s house where the car is, I might just sneak out for a bit and check it out.
  5. So, was able to pull my sending unit out on my 77 from the rear hatch. Before this discussion i thought they all we like this. I bought a new o-ring and locking ring when I put in it back in. I’ve read somewhere to be careful pulling off the wires from the unit as they can fracture at the connection easily. I didnt have a problem. I know they changed the deck lid configuration in the middle of 77. I have the deck lid that curves upward towards the taillight versus the standard flat deck (wish I had the flat decking) .
  6. SledZ, that interior looks like it the windows were left open when Mount St. Helens erupted in the 80’s. Where was this car?
  7. Okay, thanks for the tip. It’s is apparent a PO tried to pry the box open from the top to no avail. After removing the screws I didn’t try running a long driver in the gap but will see if it is possible . There has got to be other 5at have had this problem. The only other option is to drill out the lock and get a new one later. You never know there might be a stack of cash in the glovebox ?.....good to dream.
  8. I have the same problem with my glove box. I tried removing the bottom screws and it still didn’t come off. What was the trick. I’m really hoping there is something exciting in there waiting for me. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  9. Virginia is arguably the worst place to “test your carburetors”. All my tickets are from Virginia mostly on I-95 and 295. It’s a money scheme. Tests your carbs somewhere else, like Georgia. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. I looked everywhere for a new sending unit on my 77...no dice. I soaked mine in a acid bath and it cleaned up nicely. It then passed the resistance test but is not working in the car. Could be a actual gauge problem. The tanks are a lot different in the 240z and the sending unit arm is a different length. I imagine it would work but likely not accurate. What did your pay to have yours refurbished? I remember it being pretty costly. The cheapest I found was a mom and pop place that specializes in old sending units in NY that wanted to charge $150 plus shipping. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. I’m jealous, I was in the salt mines working while you guys were playing and racing to ZCon. Next year maybe I’ll get a kitchen pass from my wife and call in sick for work. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. Cliff, Thanks it was an honor to serve a grateful nation. Someone said it earlier but I wanted to say it again. The families carry much of the burden of the ones who serve. Deployments are hard on the ones left behind. The experiment we call America is fragile and most are unaware how special it is. Freedom is lost in miles and regained in inches and usually at the end of a sword. No one can serve without out the support of our citizenry. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  13. It’s on my list. The car sat for almost 18 yrs, I was happy I was able to get it to run (thanks to the people on this forum). Rome wasn’t built overnight ?
  14. I’ve arrived safely. Here’s her new home for the time being. She’ll be in the barn. Thanks for all the support. 0614717B-3788-48B1-8AFC-1CA4BF3E299D.MOV
  15. The Z is going to Fayetteville tonight (parents farm), there is a big barn there with other of my late Dad’s cars. It will be there for a few months until my house we are building is complete. My in-laws live in the Raleigh area. I live in Emerald Isle and building a house there. New house has a big garage.
  16. It’s upside down so when the cargo door is open it can be viewed from the outside right side up. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  17. Bruce, there are some things I leave to the professionals and welding is in that list. Be careful. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  18. That’s funny one of my roommates in my crash pad had his F150 truck shipped from Anchorage Alaska to Memphis and the company paid for it because it was part of the moving allowance. It was stuffed in the back of an MD-11. I’m not so lucky Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  19. Cliff, I needed to avoid those mountains. They would have smoked my tranny. Already hit 183 degrees on the small hills near Talladega.
  20. Probably averaging 15.5. That’s an instant snap shot. These 4runners are bullet proof. In my humble opinion the best SUV on the market. I’ve had it 10 yrs and have only changed the battery and normal servicing. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  21. So in preparation of this trip and I installed an external transmission cooler on my 4runner and then I downloaded an app called OBD Fusion and bought an ODB2 reader and seems to be working great. I was worried about my transmission temperature because my load is just at my limit of 5000 pounds. Check out my readings.
  22. Well gents it’s finally time to move the Z from Memphis to North Carolina. I’ll now have more access to it so I can really start getting this restoration going. Again I appreciate all the help up to this point it was great to be able to drive it up onto the car transport. I’ll be on the road all day today headed through Birmingham, Atlanta, Florence and then North Carolina
  23. People have a lot of options on this topic. From my research 10W-30 was the recommended oil with some caveats. https://zcarguide.com/datsun-280z-oil-change-guide/ Lots of discussions about Zinc Additives and many recommend Valvoline with ZDDP. Here is another link. https://www.viczcar.com/forum/topic/5765-l-series-preferred-oil-brand-and-grade/
  24. Eveyone loves pics on the forum....why are you holding out on us? Its like the plastic sleves over dirty magazines in 7/11, everyone wants to peek.
