I would have the steelies checked for "true" (runout) before painting or mounting tires. I put 195/70/14 on my original wheels...too wide of the spare tire well. Just sayin'...

  7. Zed may have the answer I was looking for. Just the slightest flat spot on the rim of the backing plate. I gently bent it with a screwdriver and (knock on wood) no more clicking when I back up...! Thanks, Zed...!

  9. I appreciate the responses. After looking at the "plug" and the hub, I don't believe they have anything to do with the noise. I'm beginning to think bearing...just can't feel anything significant when I rotate the hub. Hmmmm...

I have a clicking sound coming from the right rear wheel / axle / brake when I am backing up...especially when I pull out of the garage in the morning. My initial thoughts focused on the universal joints, then the rear wheel bearing, but looking at the inside of the drum, there is a slight indentation in the round plug seen in the pics. The plug is about 2mm proud of the inner face of the drum and there are shiny tracks on the edges of the hub. I have to assume I have found the source as there is no bearing noise when I rotate the hub...and no play either...same for the U-joints which are new. I am also getting a slight rumble out of the area in question. Any thoughts...?
  12. I recently replaced the rubber "refills" in my stock 240-Z wiper arms. The Trico 47-700 (7mm) were too loose. The 47-800 (8mm) were too tight. I took the 8mm rubber and used the 7mm stainless stiffeners and the combination fit perfectly. About $20.00 total.

  16. Success...! (I hope) I was curious as to the wiring of the connectors associated with the wiper motor. I referenced the ABATE wiring diagram (excellent) and found a discrepancy in the configuration of the wires in the 6 wire connector that the wiper motor plugs into. Wish I had started there, but I could not be a happier guy right now...! Two wires were swapped...The Blue (L) wire and the Blue with Red Stripe (L/R). The intermittent relay still sounds like it is clicking on and off no matter which setting the switch is on, but I am elated that I can actually turn the wipers OFF...! I appreciate everyone's comments and suggestions. Persistance and beer work wonders...!
  17. First things first, my car is a 1973 240-Z...the first year of intermittent wipers. So I am back on the issue of my wipers being ON whenever the ignition is ON. I turn the key ON with the wiper switch OFF and the wiper motor runs and the buzzer buzzes some of the time off and on. When I switch the wipers to the first detent (intermittent), the wiper motor runs and I can hear a relay clicking intermittently. I then switch the wipers to the next detent (low) and the motor speed does not change but continues to run. I then switch to what should be "high" and the wiper motor speed slows, but continues to run. SteveJ and I are going to be tackling this issue within the next few weeks, but any comments are always welcomed.
  18. Hey...Does anyone have pictures of how the closure panel that covers the gas tank filler neck, etc. fastens to the inner fender...? Any tips on the procedure...? I assume it's not rocket science, but the original holes for the screws got welded up and I just want mine put back in the right place. Thanks...Ryals
  19. I actually thought that the float may have been compromised and filling with gasoline. Nice to have ended up the way it did. Now back to the wiper issue...!

The gas gauge on my '73 was not responding, other than the needle coming up to "E" when the key is on, no matter how much fuel is in the tank. I finally clipped the two wires together at the sending unit and the gauge jumped right up to "F". I pulled the sending unit (new) and "Surprise, Surprise" (thanks, Gomer)...the little screw that holds the float arm shaft tight to the rheostat contact arm was loose...! I never checked it before it's initial installation and it was a head-scratcher for others as well as myself. Feeling foolish in North Georgia...

Sorry to be a nay sayer...I ordered diamond vinyl from Interior Innovations and the quality was far less than desired. The material was thin and cheap, and the embossing was almost non-existent. I returned it for a full refund. This was about 3+ years ago. Not sure what is with the sewn diamond patterns, but if you want real leather, I suppose its the only way to get the look of embossed vinyl. I had another negative experience with Banzai. It wasn't the quality, as I never saw what Mike offers...it was just dealing with him on a set that was sourced from Distinctive Industries. At the time, they were changing material vendors and I saw a "puffy" vinyl set that Chet Whitle had received for a car he was doing...and called Mike with my concerns. He immediately cancelled my order without discussion. I was in shock...! I'm sure he is a great resource to the "Z" hobby, but wasn't to me at the time. I ended up with a kit from Motorsports and am very pleased with the quality. All the best...Ryals
  23. Not sure what you mean "cloth check on the back"...
  24. Any comments on the effect different tire sizes have on speedometer calibration...? I am running 195/70-14 on stock steel rims on my 240 and feel as though my speedo reads a little fast. I think my 5-speed trans is from an early 80's Maxima and I am running a 3:54 diff. I am considering putting 205/55-15 on my new Rewinds as the cool speedo calculator on Tire Size.com indicates they will bring the speedo down a few mph at 65. What say anyone on the topic...? Thanks...Ryals
  25. Anyone need a fuse box cover for 240z...? It fits my 1973...not sure what other years. Whatever shipping will be will put it on your doorstep.
