HIGH PLAINS RACEWAY, CO updates
Reliable sources say that the west loop has it's first layer of pavement, Sunday the north loop should have its first layer as well. The web site has updated pic with a couple from the air showing the track layout. www.highplainsraceway.com

What to expect at hot-lapping
Agree, they will do something to slow everyone down. I was disappointed at willow springs. The first two run groups had pace cars. I should have just gone over to the streets and had a lot more fun. The last time colorado held a national event in '96, '98(?), we used the runways from the old airport. Although I wasn't a z owner back then I don't think they changed the way they ran the event. Our old track(2nd creek raceway) was only 1.7 miles and very tight course. Our new track( www.highplainsraceway.com ) will be 2.5 miles with a couple of long straights while still having slow and technical portions. Even with 4 run groups we still have plenty of track time. 2 20 min sessions and 3 15 min sessions. That is plenty for people who aren't racers but like to drive their car to it's ability without getting in trouble with the law.

What to expect at hot-lapping
Different clubs will have different rules. For example at the nat'l z convention in Long Beach in '04 they had 3 classes IIRC. The track event was at willow springs. 2 classes were follow the leader each at different speeds, no passing allowed at all. The 3rd had limited passing and only with a point by. Needless to say that class had a stern talking to between sessions because of free for all passing. The z car club of colorado has 2-3 track events a year. We have 4 classes of different ability. You enter the class that best describes your ability. A-experienced B- C- D-novice We only allowed passing in all levels on one straight and only with point by. Even the most experienced level. Our track events are not races. The reason for our classes is not so much wheel to wheel racing as knowing when to get out of the other's way to allow them to pass without causing any contact. Each track also has their own rules regarding open test and tune. I don't have any experience when it comes to mid ohio and their rules. As far as speeds etc, just drive within your ability and keep your car under control. If you are too reckless you will eventually talk to the track steward to have a little talk.

HIGH PLAINS RACEWAY, CO updates
ground breaking took place today. It was raining all day so I didn't take too many pics because it was too crowded. http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c301/dlh2460/High%20Plains%20Raceway/groundbreaking8-15-08002.jpg http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c301/dlh2460/High%20Plains%20Raceway/groundbreaking8-15-08003.jpg http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c301/dlh2460/High%20Plains%20Raceway/groundbreaking8-15-08004.jpg http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c301/dlh2460/High%20Plains%20Raceway/groundbreaking8-15-08005.jpg http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c301/dlh2460/High%20Plains%20Raceway/groundbreaking8-15-08006.jpg http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c301/dlh2460/High%20Plains%20Raceway/groundbreaking8-15-08007.jpg http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c301/dlh2460/High%20Plains%20Raceway/groundbreaking8-15-08001.jpg

Tokiko springs installed
That's normal for the tokicos. The progressives go with the close coils to the top. Although I'm not sure if it would make a difference. The fronts are progressive and the rear are linear. The progressives are used as your'e going over small bumps to soften the ride.

280Z 5 speed, How bad is it?
I definitely prefer the late 5 spd. The big difference is 2nd to 3rd. While on the track I could redline the tach in 2nd and when I shifted to 3rd there was a big drop in rpm almost to the point of chugging. I went from a 4 spd to the late 5 spd. It depends how much spirited driving you are going to do.

Dashboard Removal (Help!)
Don't forget about the heater control wires. The dash is cake compared to those. But overall it really isn't too bad. I have swapped out dashes in both the 240z and 280zx.

house and equipment mover needed.
House mover needed to pick up and move kenz240z garage with it's contents to me, with a stop over around the corner to pick up a 4 post lift and bridgeport from ncol. Then bring them down to broomfield. ;-) Kenz240z, Pop's Z, ncol and I got together saturday to change oil and crack open a few transmissions. One 4 speed was junk and Ken will be able to use it as a core for the 5 spd. The late 5 spd is great on the inside, but the tail housing has a bad bushing which scored the driveshaft yoke. I'm not sure if a speedy sleeve will work on the driveshaft with a new bushing or not. The early 5 spd looks ok except for when a previous owner dropped the tail and broke the end of the tail shaft. A new tail shaft for the early 5 spd will make that one usable. As we found out the 4 spd tail shaft won't work. Ken, thanks again for the use of the lift. Glen(ncol) it was good to finally meet you. Mike, thanks for letting me drive your car, it let me know what I was missing with a 2.4 ingine in a 240.

Dashboard Removal (Help!)
If you have an actual Nissan factory service manual, then it will have the procedure to r&r the dash.

Transmission upgrade
The z31 4 spd auto is electronic, the maxima trannies are the dumb ones which can be used for the swap in the 280zx. If you're looking for a complete bolt on no mods required for anything then you will never find it. The maxima OD auto going into a 280zx will require some fabrication, brackets for the new tranny mount, cutting of the old tunnel mounts, new exhaust, minor wiring. Lasst but not least, you will want to rebuild the tranny before putting it in so you know you have a good transmission.

An ignorant question about fuel injectors
lay the harness around the injectors, that should tell you where they go.

Be safe out there...
Rob, since i didn't know who that was in your avatar, I am glad you both took it as a compliment. It's great when we have people that understands what a sense of humor is. Mitchka, Sorry for your loss. And it was very honest in your opinion about your cousin and the bike he was riding. You could have very easily put it all on the driver, but you don't know exactly what the driver saw of a motorcycle moving at 100mph or more coming towards them. Unfortunately he paid the ultimate price.

Tranns type question.
If it is like this, then the hinge bushings are the most economical way to replace if you have a bench vise. http://www.classiczcars.com/photopost/data/500/medium/4_spd.jpg If any filing needs to be done it might need to be dome on the flats after the bushings are pressed in to fit between the ears. Using the bench vise you can press them in square one bushing at a time, then use the vise to again press the pin through the bushings, this will form the bushings to the pin for an exact fit. It might be a little tight at first but twisting it back and forth will free it up easily. I have used my shifter on the track and put it through it's paces for over 6 yrs and have not had a problem. It's still as tight and no wear. help me part # 38377 for the pair of bushings. There is another bushing variety pack that has 4 sets of different bushings, one set maybe two will work, not sure of the part number on that, but same section in "help me". Either set is less than $5.
-
Tranns type question.
Make sure you know which tranny you have, does it have linkage exposed or does the shifter go into the tranny? The door hinge bushings work for the later transmissions that have the lever going into the tranny.

I thought it was because of you avatar. 8-) thoughts go out to the passenger and families of both.
