The drivers side floor board in the first photos is with the tar mat removed by the previous owner. He started scraping off undercoating all over it. We took a wire wheel to common rust prone areas. There was a small pin hole in the passenger side dog leg. I took a grinder and cut out about the size of a quarter to look. That was the largest area of rust. The shell is very solid. We will be parting it out. The shell is free to anyone that wants it. We have a bill of sale from the owner. It was last registered in California in 1995.

Hi guys, I have a slight dilema here. A few hours ago a friend and I bought a 1970 240Z parts car. The VIN is in the 12,000's and it has an automatic with a SU carbed L28. The dilema is about cutting it up. Check out these photos. http://www.fairladyzg.com/images/240z/index.htm This has no major rust. There is not even minor rust we have found. Floor pans are intact along with the battery tray. The primer is showing surface rust. Would anyone be interested in the body? It would be a shame to cut it up. By the way, the Blue 1975 280Z, funny thing there. I jacked it up and the rubber insulators were rotted away. Not something I have seen happen before. Ultimately I need to stop looking at criagslist!

Drove my stock 78 5-Speed 280Z from Sacramento to Los Angeles for the West Coast Nationals. Left Friday night and came back Sunday night. My speedometer is accurate using the highway mileage markers. I recorded a total of 4 refueling stops to top off the tank. Start | End | Gallons | Miles | MPG 71878 | 72138 | 11.146 | 260 | 23.33 72138 | 72374 | 9.873 | 236 | 23.9 72374 | 72567 | 8.145 | 193 | 23.7 72567 | 72824 | 11.364 | 257 | 22.62 Total miles = 946 / 40.528 Gallons = 23.34MPG The odometer has turned over once. So it started at 171,878 miles on the original motor. The RPM's averaged about 3,200 on Interstate 5. This was both to and from. Most of the way I was in groups doing about 85-90. This mileage was also with the A/C on. There was a little bit of driving around the Los Angeles area included. Fuel used was 89 octane.

There must have been several varieties of these switches. Just last week I pulled a different type out of a 77 280Z. The AM/FM radio mounted a switch above the tuner dial. At least Nissan stayed consistant with the connectors.

It is the stock antenna switch for a 1978 280Z. When aftermarket Radio/CD are installed, there is no room to mount it in the proper place.

How about a 71 Fairlady Z owners manual, CST-113ZB radio manual, and Consumer Information booklet? Also have a 1978 280Z owners manual.

Here is a photo of the one out of my 78. It is the same as a 73 Fairlady I had in the early 1990's. I remember the 73 had snap-in floor mats with cut outs around the bar.

It is actually a 77 or 78 model. California DMV made a mistake. You could push the issue with them but why? Registered as a 1970 gets you away from having to smog it.

The engine is a Nissan RB25DET.
  10. I wondered if there were any posts on this Fairlady Z here. This is how it looked November of 1986 in Okinawa Japan. For almost 20 years I have been curious about its whereabouts. Nice to see it still survives. Unfortunately Don, the owner, passed away recently. Finding these old photos of mine encouraged me 3 years ago to buy a 1978 2+2 Fairlady Z. I always liked the way Don set his Z up with the G-Nose and rear spoiler.

Since this is the open Zcar discussion area, here are some of my observations of the differences. These pertain to the 1970 - 1978 Fairlady-Z's. 1. Same thin style front & rear bumbers 2. Front grills were mesh type people like to think were unique to 432 option. 3. Fuel doors have actual keyed locks (For sure 73 up). 4. A seperate switch to turn on parking lights. 5. Emblem on the hood says "Z" vs. "Datsun" on export U.S.A. models. 6. There is no factory placed VIN on the left corner windshield like U.S. Models. 7. Japanese market 1977-1978 Fairlady-Z serial numbers start with S31. 9. There is a momentary contact button at the end of the turnsignal switch to flash the high beams.

If you are in the Sacramento area, I may be able to help you out.
  13. Darn, I am in Sacramento and would like to come see what you have. But right now as I post this, I am in Hong Kong visiting my wife! I have a 2+2 sitting in the drive way for her now but it is in poor shape. I will be back in Sacramento this Saturday.

It may not be a 1969 model. Later model Fairlady Z's had a VIN starting with S31. Earlier models would start with S30. I am not completely sure but S31 started around 1977? Edit http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1970-FAIRLADY-Z-Datsun-nissan-510-B210-240Z-260Z-280Z_W0QQitemZ250026452422QQihZ015QQcategoryZ6188QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem If it is this one on ebay, I can definetly say it is not a 69 or 70 Fairlady Z. DMV made a mistake.
  15. 12K and no A/C? The 73 Fairlady Z I bought back from Okinawa had that same type of carb setup. In 1987 smog laws required visual and sniffer tests. Mine passed the sniffer with no problems and a BAR referee signed off the motor the way it looked. Nice not having to deal with a air pump like the 240Z's were required to have. Made a nice tidy engine compartment. Why have a RHD Z here in the U.S.? It's fun and unique. Plus the Fairlady Z's are registered as Nissan vs. Datsun. Not that that really matters. They have been around long before the Sport Compact scene took over. For a while I did not even know what JDM meant.
  16. I personaly do not know who vintagecarguy is. But this is getting a bit Ridiculous. So what if the guy is out to make a few bucks. So what if he made a poor choice on an Acura purchase. There is a lot of gray area between garbage and diamonds. We have all made regretable purchases in the past. He is not going to make a killing at selling Z's. That is a proven fact we all should know. The guys at MSA love the Z cars but they also have to eat. If it turns into a profitable business then of course he should become a vendor like they are. Even the most run down Z's body in this area are better than what I've seen for sale in the mid West and East coast. Now I am talking about the Sacramento Valley, not California in general. Eventually the Well will run dry around here. But why not save a few of them from the crushers? Even if someone makes a few dollars at it.
  17. To what degree would this be considered a business? I mean, what is all the time and effort in helping someone out worth? There have been many instances where I have sold dirt cheap or given away parts only to see them relisted for sale. Now stuff like that gets on my nerves more than anything else. So from this point on, I no longer go out of my way unless there is at least a little compensation for my time and effort. Even though I do not post much on this forum, I do alot of reading on it. At least vintagcarman asked about interest instead of joining just to sell through the classifieds. Prime exampe http://www.classiczcars.com/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=1410&cat=4 Joins forum and starts selling the same day http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/member.php?u=12520 Even if vintagecarman was doing this soley for the money, he definetly would not make that much at it. Lets face it, there is just not as much of a market for the Z's as we all would like. Not many will stomach the thought of spending $800 to $1200 shipping a little to no rust Z being purchased for $500 to $1000.

The previous owner had a 16 gauge stranded wire going from the positive battery terminal going to the interior. Since it was not connected to anything, I switched it to the negative terminal, crimped on an eyelet, and them bolted it to the relay's bracket. This is a temporary fix for now. Just as a note, there is another way other than a multi meter to check for loose or open ground connections. Use a 12 volt light probe. With it connected to a known good battery ground, touch around the bare wires and look for a light. While it cannot not give you an exact ohm reading, at least you can find an obvious open circuit that is supposed to be grounded. The light came on when I touched it to the relay case I mentioned in a previous post. Once a connection was made, the relay was also grounded and I could here it click.
  19. If it is in the Sacramento area I will be more than happy to verify a persons intentions. I personaly hate seeing good Z's go to scrap.
  20. I have to agree with vintagecarman about how many good fixable Z's there are around Sacramento. Many of them are parked or on blocks. Mostly I pay attention to the 240Z - 280Z's but I also see lots of 280ZX's. There was a Z31 that sat with a for sale sign on it for $300.00. Needed a transmission but the car was in great shape otherwise. Saw that one sit for 6 months. Passed it everyday going to work.

I can possibly add another ground point. My 76 Z was not getting voltage to the ignition circuit. After pulling out the fuse block and tracing the Black wire with a white strip, I found a relay mounted to a bracket. The relay was above the fuze block, had to remove the glove box to even see it. Upon touching this relay, I received a nice shock. Once I put a solid ground on the relay bracket, it fired right up. So I am guessing relay casings also need a solid ground.
  22. I have one of those airdams on a 1976 280Z. It may end up being a parts car soon. I am located in South Sacramento if you want to check it out.
  23. After many hours of chipping out the tar mats inside and taking a propane torch to the undercoating, I decided enough is enough. My Z was loaded on a trailer and taken to American Stripping in Sacramento. They specialize in media stripping all types of cars. It may have cost $1000.00 but was worth every penny. They take pride in their work and do it right. http://www.americanstrippingsacramento.com/home/
