New to SU carbs, have a few questions
Guys, Thanks for all the help. Looks like I'm going to give it a crack and clean/ freshen up my SU carbs. Thanks again!
-
what model?
Yes, they definitely look like Hitachi Flat-top carbs. I hear there are a lot of issues with the flat-top carbs. I have a 73 and the previous owner swapped the flat-top carbs out for SU carbs. I'm glad he did.

New to SU carbs, have a few questions
Hello, I am fairly new to SU carbs and have a few quick questions. I have a 1973 Datsun 240z with 3 hole SU carbs. I was driving the car the other day and noticed that I was loosing power at WOT. I got the car home and it was idling low and died out on me in the driveway. I popped the hood open and noticed that the rear carb was leaking from the lower nozzle head or hose onto my header (I don't want to burn my car down). I also noticed that the float bowl was loose (loose meaning I can take my hand and rock it back and forth)and some fuel was coming out of the top float nipple. Sound like I have a couple of issues here with the float and/or lower jet nozzle/nozzle hose. Below are a few newbie questions I have. 1. Should the float bowl be loose? I can take my hand and rock it back and forth. 2. Should the overflow nozzles have a hose to direct the fuel away from the header? 3. Are the nozzle hoses hard to come by? I did a quick search and couldn't find anything online. Where I can get some replacement hoses? 4. How hard is it to remove the jet and is there a seal or gasket that can be replaced here? 5. How hard is it to completely remove the carb from the car? Thanks, Dan

Need Help Identifing my electronic ignition setup
So how can I identify what year 280zx this came out of? I just check the ignition module and found that it is an E12-80. So after digging around it looks like this is out of a 1979-1981 280zx N/A. Can someone please confirm that this is correct? Also does anyone know what would be the recommended spark plugs and spark plug gap for this distributor? Thanks! Dan

Need Help Identifing my electronic ignition setup
I've purchased my car a few years ago and never really did anything to the engine except for an oil change and new spark plug wires. I've decided to upgrade the ignition system by upgrading it to an electronic ignition and when I pulled my dizzy cap off to check the points system I found that it was already converted over to an electronic setup. I would like help identifying which electronic system is installed. See photos below. Looks to me that this may be an 280zx distributor swap. Can someone help me identify what I have installed? BTW...My Z is a 1973 240z I would like to upgrade the coil, as I have seen that a "flame thrower" coil would be a good upgrade. There's two options here, a 1.5 ohm and a 3.0 ohm coils. Which one should I get? Spark plug wires are new which I got from Datsun Spirit. Also what spark plug would you guys recommend? Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks Dan!

Q's about 73 Datsun 240z dash/map light wiring
Jfa.series1 thanks for the help. I just wanted to confirm I was on the right track. I'll look for the red wire with the open female connector for the map light tomorrow. Thanks again for your help!

Q's about 73 Datsun 240z dash/map light wiring
ok after looking over all the wiring. It turns out that I have two blue wires with female connectors that are unplugged. One should be to the blower motor power source. The second one has me stumped, could it be to the radio? The radio harness has three wires which includes two speakers and a blue wire. There's a red with blue striped wired that is loose. Could the red with blue stripped wire go to the other blue female connector? This still leaves the question as to where does the map light connect too? Thanks, Dan

Q's about 73 Datsun 240z dash/map light wiring
After looking a this closer looks like the red (+) wire from the blower motor harness is blower motor power source. So where does this go? The only wire I have left over to hook this too s a blue wire (See photo attached)

Q's about 73 Datsun 240z dash/map light wiring
Hello, First I need some help figuring out where the map light is hooked up too. It looks to me as if the map light red (+) wire goes to the heater blower motor harness which has a red wire as well. Now there's a black (-) wire from the map light that I don't know where it connects too. Can anyone confirm where the black (-) wires goes? I see that the blower motor harness has a black wire with a ground hook but the wire from the map light has a male connector. Thanks, Dan

Dash Harness Backup light Wire Q's
looks like grannyknot is correct and the wires are in the harness itself and are not connectors like they are shown in the diagram. Thanks for all your help guys! I was worried that my harness was missing these connectors but that's not the case!

Dash Harness Backup light Wire Q's
Hello, I need to some help understanding/locating where these two backup light wires go. They are #39 & 40 on the diagram below. The description on the diagram states they are backup light wires but I don't see where they would be plugged into. #39 - Backup Lights (RB) #40 - Backup Lights (LR) Thanks, Dan

Series II 240Z Factory Electric Fuel Pump - V3 Modification Program
Zed Head, One of the members (bjhines) on here did specifically state that the electric pump was only used to prime the engine. "I have to chime in here on some misinformation on the operation of the ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP WIRING. The 1973 240Z uses ONLY THE MECHANICAL PUMP during normal operation. The electric fuel pump is for priming the system ONLY!!!!! It will not operate once the engine is running. None of this is detailed in the electrical diagrams. There are hundreds of things not shown in any of the wiring diagrams. There are a bank of relays on the passenger kick panel for the 1973 240Zs. There are 2 relays associated with the electric fuel pump. Relay 1) cuts the fuel pump OFF once the alternator produces 12v(engine running). Relay 2) cuts the fuel pump OFF when the starter is engaged(start pos on the key). The operation of the electric fuel pump is only to PRIME or REPRIME(vapor lock) the fuel system. It will operate when you turn the key to the RUN position. The relays cause it to shut off once the car is running or the starter is engaged. The electric fuel pump has a filter on the bottom that is often neglected. Check it or change it. There are many other components on the passenger kick panel that operate flashers, wiper delay, wiper auto run for the washer pump, EGR relay and temp switch, accessory relay, etc. The electrical diagrams only brush over the most basic systems in your car. There are hundreds of wires that are simply not shown in ANY of the available diagrams. This is especially true for the bastard 1973 model 240Zs." I should be able to confirm this once i'm finished with mine.

Series II 240Z Factory Electric Fuel Pump - V3 Modification Program
Hls3073z, I do believe that I've figured out the missing wires to the "V-3" modification program. This fuel system was designed to work with both electrical and mechanical fuel pumps. The electric fuel pump was used to prime the engine than once the engine started the electric fuel pump would shut off and the mechanical pump would do the rest. This is why in harness A there two are wires, one wire to the starter solenoid to fire the electric pump and one the the voltage regulator to shut the electric pump off once the alternator was running. I am waiting on a few electrical connectors to custom make harness "A" and give it a try. Thanks!

Series II 240Z Factory Electric Fuel Pump - V3 Modification Program
Zed Head, first let me apologize for putting this up on the wrong forum. I got page 11 from this form. It came from a 1973 240z to 1974 260z fuel system modification manual I found scrolling through this forum. The manual has to do with the "V-3" Modification program Datsun introduced for a fuel system modification to add an electric fuel pump to the original manual fuel pump system. I've attached the whole manual for your reference. I agree 100% that a wiring diagram would've been easier. Unfortunately no wiring diagram was provided with this fuel system modification. But after looking through some of these forms I've figured out where the two wires in question go. The Yellow wire goes to the Voltage regular and the black wire goes to the starter solenoid. At least I hope so! I will confirm my findings later tonight when I go home and check the car. As for who I am, I'm a Datsun/Nissan enthusiast just like you! I've owned and driven Z cars since I got my drivers license. Thanks! Dan 1973 240z 1974 260z fuel system modifications.pdf

Series II 240Z Factory Electric Fuel Pump - V3 Modification Program
Hello, I am in the process of restoring my 1973 Series II 240z and am looking for someone that still has or is familiar with the factory electric fuel pump setup/wiring (AKA V-3 Modification Program). My car came with the mechanical pump and also an electric pump but the previous owner hacked into the factory wiring and really wired the electric pump in a very strange way. I want to revert the wiring to factory original. My car has both relays "A" & B" per the V-3 modification. I also have the hacked up V-3 Modification Harness B but it's way to hacked up to reuse to I found a new one on Ebay. I am having an issue with find where two wires go from the new V-3 Modificaton Harness B. Below is what I have figured out so far. V-3 Modification Harness B 1. 6 Pin harness connector - Goes to Relay "B" 2. 4 Pin harness connector - Goes to Relay "A" 3. Black Ground Strap - Strapped to Relay "B" 4. 2 Pin harness connector - Goes to fuel harness under radio/console 5. Two wires (Yellow w/Black stripe & Black w/White stripe) - This is what I cannot figure out where these wires go. The V-3 modification diagram shows what looks like these wires going up above the dash somewhere but that's it. Can anyone shine some light here? Thanks, Dan

Wiring Path for Electric Fuel Pump
I have a 1973 Series II 240z that I am restoring. I have both relays A & B but was missing the V-3 modification harness. I picked up a new harness from Ebay but can't figure out where two wires go. Here's what I've figured out so far. 1. 6-pin harness goes to relay B 2. 4 pin harness goes to relay A 3. Black ground strap is grounded to relay B 4. long 2 pin harness goes to the fuel harness under the radio/console 5. there's two wires (yellow w/black stripe & Black with white stripe) - these are the wires I cannot figure out where they go. Per the diagram on Harness B is looks like they go up above the glove box somewhere. Can anyone help? Thanks, Daniel B.
