Dash Covers? Look!
Atomrat, Sorry about the late reply, changed ISPs, and missed a few emails(thread updates). Before I sent the '72 dash off, I called and requested a quote. My quote was based on a '72 dash with a typicaly cracked pad, but no other damage. They do want a pad on the dash, and all accessories that fit against (or through) the pad left in. DashRestorations requested pictures of the dash, and the quote was contingent on the condition of the frame/accessories of the dash, and receiving the dash within 60 days. They also sent a form to specify the work they were to do, and the form of payment. I asked questions at length, to the point I was out of them. Every question was answered efficiently and well-that is to say the answers were known before I asked the questions-they had been there before. Very professional, friendly, and customer oriented. If the quality of the dash restoration is as good as the pre-sales customer service, this will be $500 well spent. Will PS I will post some of the "as sent" pictures in my gallery tonight.

How much did you pay for your Z?
The '73 I have had 20 years, I paid $2,200 for 290000 miles ago! it was in great mechanical condition, new AC, new paint, and needed a new console, seats, a dash cover, to be complete. The '72 I just got was for sale for $800-I traded for it. It is almost"all :stupid: original" (Tripple Webbers and Canon intake excluded). It needs all kinds of things(none of which the '73 needed). Every part I was going to replace(except the block) and upgrade is actually worn out! Other than the holes in the floors, it was just what I wanted-an essentially strait car that actually needed upgrades to survive! Will

Holy crap!!!
2ManyZs pretty much covered it, Webbers are kind of like an MG. They both run quite well for thirty minutes after you tune them, and then it is time to tune them again! I want to enjoy my car '72 on a daily basis; and, while I do enjoy tinkering, I don't like having to do the same thing over and over in a relatively small time-frame! Will

Holy crap!!!
As an owner of a '72 with tripple webbers , I agree with Carl. Get Ztherapy involved with shipping you something, be it a video(first suggestion) or a Set of corrected SUs (with a video to keep them happy). If you are really set on tripple webbers, I know of a set that will be comming available:stupid: ! (check my gallery for pictures-I have had the car running). Will

"Doing it Right"
What Carl said! if it ain't broke, and the color isn't being changed, why worry about it! On the Hardware, call Chloe at MidwestZ, she has all of the pieces-or at least the current Nissan version. Ditto on the rotisserie, if you want one, but don't have the time or inclination to build your own, email Kmack(Z of the month fame!). I got one from him several days ago, well built, painted, and cheeper than I could have put it together myself! I am hoping to ge the '72 on it next week! Will

Dash Covers? Look!
Ok, My Dash went out early this week to DashRestoration USA, UPS wanted $129 to ship, USPS wanted $134 Greyhound wanted $112, and the winner was Fedex at (DrumRoll Please...) $35 really, $35-what was I getting for the additional $100 or so? I couldn't figure it out, so, I drove to the airport and set everything up at the counter. Was the trip worth $100-it was to me! Anyway, I sent the dash wrapped in $20 worth of bubble wrap in a cut down Dryer box(just replaced the laundry equipment). The finished box measured in at 17"x18"x58", and weighed just over 40lbs. I removed the dash harness, the outer vent lenses-left the housings-, the climate control plumbing, and the glove box, but I left in the glove box door, and all guages(Incl. a nos clock), switches, and anything else that actually went through the dash pad. I also sent the defroster vent trim panel(between the dash and the front window), and a new heater control panel(Thanks again Chloe!). I sent everything that touched the dash pad to allow DashRestoration USA to make the fit perfect. I took a good many pictures before sending the dash, both in and out of the car. I will take the same pictures after I get it back, and post them for all to see. I expect the dash to reach Pete at Dash Restoration USA about the middle of the week, and he said it would take about a month to complete the restoration. Will

The Z Car's Nemesis?
It isn't the cars that are the target, it is the owners or the drivers, and then only the ones with the attiutude that just because they spent some money on the car, somehow they deserve the respect due the marque. My experience has been that most drivers/owers that fall into that category really can't drive anyway. They are like many wealthy people who appreciate the car because it is expensive, but don't understand that the reasons it is expensive. I have several people in my neighborhood who drive cars they are not capable of handling safely. One guy with a Boxter had war wounds atleast twice in the last month, and honestly thinks he is a better driver than Mario Andretti. His attitude is that Porsche is the only car, everything else is vermin excrement. It really upsets him horribly when I have the Z out and pull up in front of his house. His son always wants to go for a ride in the Z, and when he told his father that the Z was faster, I thought Dads head would explode-bright red face! That mentality is the target of my "bashing" My Z is right for me, his porsche is a beautiful and fine automobile, but the owners' attitude is what I take issue with. Will

The Z Car's Nemesis?
"Honestly, my heart is torn between Z's and 911's. I asked a similar question in a Porsche forum and the Z never came up. So far." Is that really a suprise? With their pedigree would you WILLINGLY bring up being beaten repeatedly by a builder of econobox grocery getters?-much less tell anyone else about being trounced on what they considered to be their own turf! Get a Z, Put a LITTLE money in it-relative to what parts for a 911 cost, and show them Porsche owners what they have chosen to so conveniently forget...They were dominated repeatedly by a mass production grocery getter! Zs got beat, and we as enthusiasts readily acknowledge that, but it didn't happen often, and usually a Z didn't loose to the same car twice. Will

The Z Car's Nemesis?
Joel, I looked through the Road Atlanta achives, and the Z ran competitvely against most cars-what is lacked in power, it more than made up for in cutting edge '70s handling, so even the monster Fords, Chevys. Dodges and a Ferrari or two frequenlty saw what Z taillights look like with a checkered flag in front of them! Looks like Porsches were the Zs meal of choise though. Paul Newman chose a Z to race, for a reason, and it wasn't to keep his racing budget low! Will

Oh My...
Isn't there some automobile rights organization somewhere that can do something? If that poor ZX was a poodle, the ASPCA would be all over that owner, making sure that he, she, or it could never own an animal again. I think maybe this car should be on "Blind eye for the ZX guy". It is the perfect candidate for the new Speedvision reality series, "Smack Jack, the owner of this car!", A show about good intentions and hard work gone horribly wrong. The featured question," What in the hell were you thinkin? " is asked by Samuel L. Jackson. Depending on the answer, Jay Leno, or another celebrity car enthusiast, has a guest spot "interacting" with the cars owner with the garage tool of viewer choice! At the end of the show, the car is properly treated for its abuse, and a suitable, and anxious, enthusiast family is given the title, keys, and a paint job in the color of their choice. The PO has his liscence revoked, and is marked for life by the Insurance Gestapo to make sure he will never legally have a car again. Don't you just love a happy ending? (BIG SIGH!) Will

Custom shifter knob
I have been married since I was 28! Until several years before I was married I wore a 22k ring with no ill effects! BTW tried Platinum, Silver, and stainless steel-plated the outside w/gold or something that looked like it-deer in headlights! Back to the thread, lost wax casting and a Kerr setup would make short work of the shifter badges in a soft lowtemp metal-like the zink derivative conduit hardware is made out of. Will

Custom shifter knob
Started at 10, went to 24 and punted with the plating! Still have no idea why, but I can only wear jewelry(ring, watch, etc) for a few hours before small blisters form, the area takes several days to recover, and will ultimately open if I don't remove the offending article soon enough-built in bio-anti-ostentation-the money looks better on the Z anyway! Custom shifter knob
Those are good material suggestions, but not good value suggestions-Actually the pieces could be made of lead , and treated for hard chrome plating. I have even melted away the lead and made a chrome shell, but the plate has to be pretty thick... Strangely enough, I have a reaction to gold, and actually had my wedding band rhodium plated to narrow down the cause. It did not stop the reaction. I always knew I was special...or was that wierd... I did move the foundry furnace to the new place today. I have yet to figure out where to put it. I expect it to be useful for enameling too. I am anxious to see those pictures! Will
