280Z Barn Find
Actually we did have to disconnect the AC line to clean some surface rust caused by weeping brake fluid from the master cylinder. We were surprised to find some pressure in the line. In hindsight we would have pumped it out, but since we didn't expect to find any, we didn't. Lesson learned.

Getting the car cleaned was step one. We didn't really touch the car until that was complete. Once that was done, the real preservation begin. The paint was cleaned July 27 and we drove it into a trailer on September 13 to take to ZCON. It was a very tight schedule. I'm very familiar with that car. I was watching it. I couldn't understand why that car had such a high bid in the first place. It didn't look like a well presented car to me. A great car to have, sure, but not a "Grand Survivor". I've seen cars just as nice sell for less then $60K I am taking great pains to keep my car as original as possible. Cleaning mainly consists of simple green and a microfiber cloth. We did have to clean the gas tank and re-core the radiator. We replaced the master cylinder and rebuild the brake calipers. Removed and cleaned the fuel injectors.

This is my car. partnering with Ammo was a chance to get the paint restored and at the same time, showcase my car. The real story of this amazing car is about it's finding and the preservation we have taken to bring it back to life after 44 years in a garage. We took the car to ZCON in September and won: "First place Stock 280Z", "Nissan Factory Favorite Most Original" and "2nd place Peoples choice S30". BAT is where it will probably eventually end up. Right now we are focusing on making sure it looks EXACTLY like it did when sitting in the dealer's showroom. That will hopefully be completed in time for ZCON. This is mostly just detailed cleaning, other than the mechanical work cleaning brake and gas lines and getting the engine running.

I don't know for sure, but I suspect the excessive undercoating was dealer applied. This was sold in Philadelphia, where there was lots of salt put on the roads.

Well, I finally started working on my "New" 280Z (350 Miles). I plan to have it finished and take it to ZCON in September. Larry from AMMO NYC came down last week and did a full Paint Preservation/Restoration, making the car look all the more unbelievable. I'll start adding some detail photos when I can, but here ar e a few.

That's all shiny undercoating just like it looked in 1976. The engine only has 360 miles on it.

I finally got the floor painted in my new barn (had to wait 30 days). I got the 280Z up on the lift for the first time.

Yes, I do have the bumper rubber parts - they are in perfect condition. The front bumper is brand new - still in the plastic bag. The PO had the license plate holes welded shut (no front plates in PA) and hat it re-chromed. He said it ended up looking terrible so he bought a new one. I do plan to eventually sell the car, My big decision is whether to keep it in it current dirty condition (as a barn find) or clean it up. And yes, I was VERY lucky (and it was all luck).

I have no idea how this car remained in such good condition. there is NO mice damage anywhere I can see. The interior is amazingly clean, and the undercarriage looks exceptionally nice (not really new, but almost). The only thing i can think is because the car was in a garage that was not used for anything but long-term storage, it remained relatively sealed from outside air - and thus very dry. There was no protection against temperature swings as the garage is not insulated. As for the interior, I guess it is clean simply because it started out clean (new) and was closed up tight. I haven't touched the engine, but I did pull the dip stick. The oil was full and looked like it just came out of an oil can - light golden. Here is a picture of a strut. This car shouldn't exist. I shouldn't be the owner, and it shouldn't be in the condition that it is. I am usually of the opposite end of that fate!!! Thanks for your input.

LOL. I want to wash that dirt off so bad! I just have to wait. It's only "Barn Find Dirty" once. Well probably only one.
