  1. It looks like the 'T' on the right is a smaller diameter?
  2. I just ordered some footage from McMaster. I've ordered stuff from them before. All good high quality. Anxious to see how it looks and fits.
  3. Does anyone know anything about full padded dash replacements from ACCU-Form? I looked up the website and see plenty of dash cap items, but I'm looking at a full replacement dash, pad and all, that attaches directly to the metal dash frame. Any experience out there? I searched a little bit here and just find discussions about dash caps.
  4. So what specie of wood do you think was used? There was a mention on BaT about walnut and maple shift knobs. I really doubt the maple and would suggest light walnut. Walnut comes in a range of color, light to dark, red to brown, and the grain is quite distinctive. Walnut might explain the various colors of the steering wheel as well.
  5. Regardless, the jute is under the transmission tunnel vinyl.
  6. "If I was doing the forensics I would look very closely at where the steel contacts the wood. The inside not the outside. The fine details around the weld beads and where the spokes enter might tell a story."
  7. Now they're arguing over the color and wood specie of the shift knob!?!!
  8. Well, hold on there, Roo. If they were made from one solid piece of wood, they would show end grain which they do not. Further, the grain on the steering wheel does not run perpendicular to the circumference of the wheel, rather parallel to it. Thus your Aston Martin wheel is made from a number of wood pieces, front and back, around the rim.
  9. You are both correct but you are splitting hairs within an incomplete definition, IMO. There are many ways to process wood, similar to our thoughts of processed cotton or wool. In the manner of manufacturing a wood steering wheel, Izumi used a processing know in the industry as "oriented strand". Oriented strand lumber products have been around since the 1940s. Similar to high pressure lamination techniques, the oriented strand process allows tighter tolerances and strength to a reinforced product like the steering wheel. And, the end product is seamless. Great welding photos of the metal rim and spokes!
  10. Oh, you make me chuckle, Zed. Of course a research author would define the definitive. Would you expect the author to say the information was random and fabricated?!?!! "Here, buy my book. I made all this up"! Obviously, the item of misinformation is the subject of this thread.
  11. First thought is that motor vehicle law might require wipers. Second thought is what a delete does to your resale value. And third thought brings my friend C.J. to mind who took his wipers off and custom welded the holes shut on the cowl piece. He was into the 'shaved look'. He used Rain-X all the time.
  12. Yes, KlassicFab would be a good choice for replacement metal.
  13. I agree. The windshield glass (and all the glass for that matter) is tempered glass. Very hard, and you are going to create waves in the glass which will distort the light coming through it. Groovy, man... You're not going to buff out any chips. I have seen some liquid glass filler used pretty successfully.
  14. I just did some math; the average bidding / selling price for a Datsun 240Z in the last six months according to BaT is $36,118.
  15. I didn't see those pictures! I actually quit looking at the car when I saw the seats and vinyl work. Now that I'm looking at "full disclosure", I can understand. That guy was upside down in the car. That's why he wanted so much for it. The disclosure didn't kill the sale. He did. He should have taken the money and run.
  16. If you go to the search header on the BaT site and type in "Datsun 240Z", you will see a chart of sales values for the past three years. It's pretty easy to see what the average sales values are; the highs, the lows. That's a good guide. BaT prices are usually high compared to eBay or Craigslist.
  17. I have built and engine or two in my career. I want to go back to the original question and ask why are you replacing the rod bearings? And, what do you hope to achieve?
  18. Gentle explanation required, evidently. The Nissan / Datsun model S30 was offered in several different platforms as you know. The platform initially exported to North America was not equipped with rear window defrosters amongst other items that were standard with other platforms destined for other markets. This is one of my reasons to deny the idea that the "240Z was made for America". The 'test' cars were so equipped indicating that the car was designed and produced at the time but this isn't what we got.
  19. The vinyl interior work, especially the seats, is horrible.
  20. I plan to use this company. Have heard good things from several references. Spacecoast Plating & Metal Refinishing Inc | Chroming Melbourne (spacecoast-plating.com)
  21. Yes, it might be a partial conversion - or - it might be a V8 swap calling itself a Scarab. It could also be a Scarab without any of the Scarab pieces. A ghost Scarab perhaps. Of course, if there was any legitimate value 'as a Scarab', it wouldn't be in that condition now would it?
